CHRISTMAS is Jarreau's first-ever collection of holiday songs on which he wraps his supple, honeyed vocal ...

Forever You CD music
$14.38 Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink Ray Davies. His very presence as arranger and lead vocal means The Kinks Choral Collection isn't nearly as stuffy and middlebrow as so many of these orchestral rock albums; he manages to inject some semblance of rock & roll by pushing the songs forward with guitar, and letting ...

Forever You album
$7.59 The album MY FUNNY VALENTINE, comprised of delicate, complexly arranged ballads, and one of trumpeter Miles Davis's finest live recordings, is taken from a concert performed on February 12, 1964. Interestingly, the up-tempo numbers from that same concert appear here on FOUR & MORE. Energized by his new, young rhythm section--drummer Tony Williams, bassist Ron Carter, and pianist Herbie Hancock--Davis tears through versions of classics ("So What," "Walkin'," and "Four") at breakneck speed.
Davis's saxophonist ...
| | Bill Bruford Earthworks Underground Orchestra CDs (2006)
Forever You CD music
$15.25 This well-rendered, joyfully rocking, jazzy and coolly swinging -- not to mention crazy and from the outer limits -- live date (recorded at N.Y.C.'s Iridium Jazz Club in 2004) serves as a celebration of the marriage of both idioms, as well as a 20th anniversary party for the legendary Yes and King Crimson drummer's famed Earthworks band. The expanded orchestra concept began as a joint-force venture between the Earthworks repertoire and woodwind player Tim Garland's London-based, nine-piece Dean Street Underground Orchestra. With Garland taking on the formidable arrangement duties, the material -- a cross-section of classic and new Earthworks pieces -- is infused with fresh energy and remarkable depth. The set launches with the fluttering jam "Libreville," which swirls staccato flute and trumpet runs (by Steve Wilson and Alex Siplagin, respectively) over jazzy piano and odd-metered, calypso-based bass and percussion. "Pigalle" is likewise a seductive, jump-for-joy free for all, while "Speaking in Wooden Tongues" goes through various phases of fusion, world music, and avant-garde, all the while allowing for extensive jazz improvisations (particularly by Wilson). Some tracks like the ballad "It Needn't End in Tears" are easier for listeners who prefer understandable melodies, but artsier-minded fans might enjoy stumbling through the chaos of the final track, "The Wooden Man Sings, and the Stone Woman Dances," to get to the more structured sections. ~ Jonathan Widran

| | Corb Lund Unforgiving Mistress CD (1999)
Forever You music CDs
$16.45 The quick version of this story is Corb Lund was a foothills-raised rodeo kid who found compelling urban credibility in the legendary "smalls" playing bass, ultimately exploring his roots playing his own country songs. Plus, live, a few of Willie Nelson's. Don't worry, Willie does the same thing on stage, which is a story for another night. If you're reading this for clues, I have to almost assume you don't know that Corb pleases large crowds on several continents, that his songs are thoughtful and deliberate and full of the nouns describing our actual surroundings, unique to a land of fluke prosperity that allows for a massive, sensitive artist class thriving in our redneck midst. Now, when Corb and I are drunk watching *Deadwood* at 4:13 a.m., that's the last thing on our minds, but the fact is our part of western Canada is uniquely attuned to sides of farm, oil and city life, underlined by Mr. Lund's actual rural roots, which have nothing to do with anything that might make you cringe about processed country music. His songs are viral anthems which bridge ...
