| | Angela Aki Home CD Angela Aki Discography of CDs
Angela Aki may be a local star, but her musical style would sound familiar to virtually any audience. In essence, she plays the type of songs heard in romantic movies, when a hero or, more likely, a heroine sits by the window and gazes at the sky, or parts from his/her beloved, or is being embraced by the latter as the final credits roll. In other words, Home is a collection of ballads, which in this particular case are centered on emotional piano lines and a strong female voice, surrounded by professional string/pop arrangements. Comparisons to Jamie Cullum are warranted, as well as to Katie Melua, provided the Anglo-Georgian beauty would switch from guitar strumming to piano tinkling and start singing in Japanese, of course. The point is, however, that Aki plays the same song over and over. Being a lady behind the keys, she could have taken some clues from Tori Amos, but no: where Amosi manages to have a lot of tricks up her sleeve without losing her identity, Aki hardly even varies the tempo ("Kiseki" being an exception), let alone the songwriting approach. It's not necessarily a bad thing -- Home is surely better for those romantic moods than having a fitting song from a sentimental OST on repeat -- but with the listeners who want more than daydreaming fodder the record runs a very big risk of feeling too sappy, even if each individual song is a success. Perhaps Angela Aki is one of those musicians who are better at singles, not LPs, and it's likely no coincidence that she has plenty of the former. ~ Alexey Eremenko

| | Michael Buble It's Time CD (2005)
Home CD music
$12.79 Michael Buble's third major US release (including the mostly live COME FLY WITH ME) stays on message--this young Canadian loves the lush, swaying music of his parents' and grandparents' generations. Buble's albums, however, are much more than mere back-in-the-day exercises. The production and arranging of David Foster (Celine Dion, Josh Groban) is eclectic in a way that firmly places the tunes at the dawn of the 21st century, and, more importantly, Buble possesses the chops and sense of style to re-imagine the adult-contemporary vocal genre in a distinctive manner. In addition to standards by Gershwin and Porter, Buble embraces a variety of sounds, from Motown ("How Sweet It Is") to bossa nova ("Quando, Quando, Quando" with Nelly Furtado) to the Beatles ("Can't Buy Me Love" with a "She Loves You" tag). With his smooth croon and charming persona, Buble is a natural performer, and, for fans of fearlessly romantic and infectiously swinging music, IT'S TIME is a sure bet.
Although it took more than a year of concerts and promotional appearances, Michael Bublé's 2003 debut disc of swinging pop standards finally ascended the Billboard album chart and landed at number 47. That peak may not seem impressive at first, but in a musical world dominated by rap or the latest flavor of alternative rock, Bublé's upper chart appearance was a real accomplishment and it sparked a renewed interest in music associated with great vocalists like Frank Sinatra. With his second studio disc, It's Time, Bublé builds upon the musical foundation ...

| | Best Of The Irish Rovers. CD (1999)
Home CD music
$7.49 Recorded between 1966 and 1971. Originally released on Decca. Includes liner notes and interviews with band members by Todd Everett.
Somewhere between Bing Crosby's vocal novelties back in the '40s and the current popularity of dance troupes like Riverdance and Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance, the flag of Irish music was held aloft in North America during the '60s by the success of the Irish Rovers. Patterning themselves after the Clancy Brothers (another popular group during the folk boom of the late '50s and early '60s), the group scored their 15 minutes of fame with the children's novelty, "The Unicorn," included here on Best of Irish Rovers. But the group was no children's novelty act, as witnessed by the preponderance of straight-ahead Irish drinking songs that spice up this 16-track collection. Highlights include "The Irish Rover," "Whiskey on a Sunday," "Mrs. Crandall's ...

| | Kaki King Legs To Make Us Longer CD (2004)
Home CD music
$9.89 Based on the meditative, space-filled opener, "Frame," listeners might associate King's work with the moody, avant-garde ambient jazz often found on the ECM label. The comparison is an apt one--King spins atmospheric landscapes from her fretboard, whether via nimble finger-picking (the spiraling melodies on "Doing the Wrong Thing") or the mathematical, push-pull patterns of "Solipsist." Regardless of her associations, King is a distinctive, accomplished musician. Her instrumental prowess is almost easy to overlook, in fact, because it is employed so artfully in the service of her hypnotic, nuanced, and lovely music.
Acoustic-guitar virtuoso Kaki King's sophomore effort improves on the dynamic instrumental compositions of her debut to include a wider range of textures, moods, and ever-evolving structures. King is also backed by a cadre of supremely ...

| | Binary Orchid Radioactivity CD (2009)
Home album
$13.15 Finally the long awaited of Binary Orchid, Gulli Gudmundsson's project featuring Arve Henriksen and Wolfert Brederode. Dreamy soundscapes and contemplative textures form the background to the improvisations of the legendary trumpetplayer Arve Henriksen. His velvet sound and haunting melodies are caught at it's best on this recording. Arve's angel voice appears as well on several tracks. Wolfert Brederode, known as well as Arve for his work on ECM records, takes the musical intensity to new levels with his ...
