20 Tracks music CDs
$12.25 Although it was 1988's Red Rose for Gregory that really fired the imagination of international audiences, Private Beach Party, unleashed three years earlier, was immensely popular in its day, and drove reggae fans worldwide to distraction. Both sets were produced by Gussie Clarke, and boasted some of his most sizzling rhythms.
In 1985, ragga was beginning to steamroll across the Jamaican dancehalls, but Party still has a wonderfully organic quality, even though it's aimed straight at the sound systems. The musicianship is superb, with Sly Dunbar, Willie Stewart, Lloyd Parks, and Robbie Shakespeare laying down the sizzling rhythms, while guitarist Willie Lindo, pianists/synth players Franklin Waul and Robbie Lyn build up the melodies and moods, ...

| | Culture Two Sevens Clash: 30th Anniversary Edition CD (1978) Deluxe Edition
20 Tracks CD music
$15.05 One of the masterpieces of the roots era, no album better defines its time and place than Two Sevens Clash, which encompasses both the religious fervor of its day and the rich sounds of contemporary Jamaica. Avowed Rastafarians, Culture had formed in 1976, and cut two singles before beginning work on their debut album with producers the Mighty Two (aka Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson). Their second single, "Two Sevens Clash," would title the album and provide its focal point. The song swept across the island like a wildfire, its power fed by the apocalyptic fever that held the island in its clutches throughout late 1976 and into 1977. (Rastafarians believed the apocalypse would begin when the two sevens clashed, with July 7, 1977, when the four sevens clashed, the most fearsome date of concern.) However, the song itself was fearless, celebrating the impending apocalypse, while simultaneously reminding listeners of a series of prophesies by Marcus Garvey and twinning them to the island's current state. For those of true faith, the end of the world did not spell doom, but release from the ...
| | Harry Cox Bonny Labouring Boy: Traditional Songs & Tunes From A Norfolk Farm Worker CDs (2001) (Import) United Kingdom
20 Tracks music CDs
$22.75 Harry Cox stands as a cornerstone of traditional English folk music, singing in his deep, rich voice, usually unaccompanied by instruments. He appeared on multiple recordings including Alan Lomax' Folk Songs of England, Ireland, Scotland & Wales, and had a profound influence on the British folk revival. The Bonny Labouring Boy offers a definitive retrospective, covering Cox' musical career from 1945 until 1970, a year before his death. The lyrics of these songs carry the stories and histories of an earlier time, covering class differences, love and courtship, and, occasionally, illicit love. The title cut, recorded in the mid-'60s, tells the story of parents attempting to prevent their daughter from marrying beneath her station, while "Miss Doxy" offers a warning to any young man who's out on the town with his pocket full of money. The sources of these songs range from old broadsides ("The Watercress Girl"), American minstrel shows ("I Had an Old Hoss"), and long-established Scottish ballads ("Bold Archer"). Little pieces of conversation augment the songs, providing insight into the singer's art. In case one thinks that this direct nod toward tradition is a wholly serious matter, there are a number of fun pieces like "There's Bound to Be a Row" and "A Week's Matrimony," where the singer's warmth and good nature shine through the lyrics. The quality of these recordings, which have ...
