For Frankie J's 2005 album, THE ONE, the Mexican-born crooner offers up an impressive collection of songs helmed by a noteworthy array of producers, including Mario Winans and Irv Gotti. And while these established music-makers could have turned out an Usher clone, the man born Francisco Javier Bautista maintained enough creative control to craft more of a sensitive, balladeer persona for himself. The singer's style is exemplified by the lush "Story of My Life," with acoustic-guitar accompaniment and a pleading tone that's more yearning than desperate. Throughout THE ONE, however, J's Latin roots are never far away, as he croons Spanish couplets amid the snappy beats of the R&B-flavored remake of Aventura's bachata hit "Obsession (No Es Amor)," which features rapper Baby Bash. J's falsetto rings convincingly on the Winans-produced Jodeci-like jam "Can't Say It's Love" and the title track, with its perfect blend of clavinet, strings, and backing vocals. Even when the vibe gets a bit rougher, as with "On the Floor," Frankie J holds his own. As a bonus, THE ONE tacks on extra cuts, including an all-Spanish reading of "Obsession (No Es Amor)."

U.K. edition with two bonus tracks.

Includes 2 UK bonus tracks.

R Kelly Untitled CD  (2009)

After his aborted, internet-leaked 2008 album, 12 PLAY: 4TH QUARTER, R. Kelly busied himself with guest spots for Beyonce, T-Pain, and Kanye West, even offering a free download on iTunes, "I Believe," inspired by the election of president Barack Obama. While such moves insured that Kelly would never stray far from the R&B throne he's occupied for more than a decade, his 2009 reboot of 12 PLAY, UNTITLED, should provide more than enough reason for fans to keep coming back for more. From Auto Tune-laden crowd pleasers like "Outta the Game" and "Crazy Night" to rousing club-oriented numbers like "Echo," Kelly downplays the slower "baby-making" jams this time around for a set of largely up-tempo songs, capped by a sultry collaboration with Keri Hilson ("Number One"). CD $8.99  SALE 4.4 stars Top 100 Audio Samples
Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's powerhouse vocals and in-your-face approach, backed by stadium-sized production, are in full effect on all 12 tracks. Even though the album deals primarily with aftermath of her divorce and includes serious moments of self-confrontation like "Sober," fans needn't worry that Pink has lost any of her chutzpah. If anything, there's an increased sense of confidence and newfound liberation on tracks like the chest-thumping "So What" and the mischievous, bouncing "Bad Influence." In softer moments, like the ballad "I Don't Believe You" and the soulful "One Wrong Foot," Pink channels her personal experience into expressions that carry no less strength or muscle. But FUNHOUSE is a pop album first and foremost, and its catchy choruses, rollicking beats, and memorable vocal performances ...

CD $9.09  4.3 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
For the past few decades, Al Jarreau has established himself as a truly modern jazz singer, one for the post-fusion generation--those who grew up with the sounds of the cordial contemporary jazz of George Benson, Spyro Gyra, and Herbie Hancock. CHRISTMAS is Jarreau's first-ever collection of holiday songs on which he wraps his supple, honeyed vocal chords around some traditional Christmas classics. Jazz vocal combo Take 6 lend their voices for "I'll Be Home For Christmas" and the considered, varied arrangements of Jay Graydon and Jarreau himself keep the proceedings interesting. Arrangers: Chris Walker ...

The "free" in the title to Joss Stone's fourth album apparently refers to the neo-singer breaking free from the shackles of her major label, EMI, who apparently have not let Joss be Joss. That this constricting argument happens to be the exact same story line Stone used for 2007's Introducing Joss Stone, the splashy diva power trip meant to unveil the "real" singer, is conveniently forgotten, as is the modern R&B of that makeover, with Joss returning to all the retro-soul of her first two records. The one lingering element of Introducing is a propensity for melisma-laden oversinging, a tic that stands out in the warmer, funkier settings of Colour Me Free! Still, her raw vocal skills remain impressive, as does her taste in soul, and this does beat with a messy human heart. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine The "free" in the title to Joss Stone's fourth album apparently refers to the neo-singer breaking free from the shackles of her major label, EMI, who apparently ...

New York City Rock N Roll
New York City Rock N Roll CD  (2003)

One songs
CD $12.65  3.5 stars
Upon seeing the title New York City Rock n Roll, one is inclined to think of rockers who came out of the Big Apple in the '60s and '70s -- people who range from Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground to the New York Dolls, the Dictators, Kiss, Blondie, and the Ramones. One thinks of punk fans packing CBGB's during the Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter years, or folks filling Max's Kansas City back when N.Y.C. really was as dysfunctional and crime-ridden as it was depicted in the Rolling Stones' "Shattered" and the 1976 movie Taxi Driver (Martin Scorsese's crowning achievement). But New York City Rock n Roll isn't a compilation of classic recordings from the '60s and '70s; assembled by promoter Steven Blush, this 2003 release turns the spotlight on 22 young bands that were active on the Big Apple club scene in the early 2000s. A variety of rockers are heard on Blush's compilation, and the influences range from punk, metal, and hard rock to power pop and glam rock; the things that most of the bands have in common is a sense of trashy, slutty, decadent, hedonistic fun. New York City Rock n Roll never tries to be introspective, and in that sense, the disc is far removed from the sort of intellectual serious-mindedness one associates with Creed, U2, or Live. Much of the time, a beer-soaked, party-like atmosphere permeates this disc; that holds true whether you're being reminded of the Pretenders on Go to Town's "Devastating," Aerosmith on Pisser's "Wifey," or Kiss on the pop-metal-ish "Luv NYC." Not everything on New York City Rock n Roll is mind-blowing; there are excellent tracks as well as songs that are merely competent. But all things considered, Blush's compilation paints an attractive, enjoyably gritty picture of the N.Y.C. rock scene in the early 2000s. ~ Alex Henderson This 22 track compilation presents New York City's grittiest bands representing the underbelly of the Big Apple and a return to Glam Punk, East Village and the Downtown Sound exemplified by such band as the New York Dolls, Iggy Pop, as well as the scene Contains 22 tracks. If Loving You Is Wrong I Don't Want To Be Right: The Best Of Luther Ingram
If Loving You Is Wrong I Don't Want To Be Right: The Best Of Luther Ingram CD  (2008)

One music CDs
CD $9.79  Audio Samples
Luther Ingram never had a hit bigger than "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right," the 1972 smash that topped the R&B charts for four solid weeks. But even though it was far and away his biggest pop success, Ingram had been making records since 1956 (with the doo wop act the Gardenias, whose sole single was produced by Ike Turner) and he was a frequent presence on the rhythm & blues circuit from 1965 onward. Ingram's best and best-known work was cut for Koko Records from 1966 through 1978, and If Loving You Is Wrong, I Don't Want to Be Right: The Best of Luther Ingram collects 17 songs from Ingram's tenure at Koko; if it isn't a complete overview of his career, this is a solid and thoroughly enjoyable celebration of Ingram's potent, soulful vocal style. Ingram knew how to milk the drama from a mid-tempo soul ballad like his biggest hit, he could wail hard on a funky dance tune like "My Honey and Me" or "Ain't Good for Nothing," and Koko prexy Johnny Baylor partnered Ingram with top-notch studio helpers, with these tunes ranging from late-period Memphis soul to polished Philly style arrangements. As a vocalist, Ingram doesn't always reveal a strongly individual style, but he shows the skill and the intelligence to craft his performance to match each tune, and every track on this ...

Again I self-produced this collection of songs, playing all the parts, except as noted below. Recorded in Garageband. Here is some info about my songs: "New Tomorrow," was written early in the morning after coming home from playing in a club. I think the message is something a lot of us can relate to. Sometimes I play this reggae style live, but released this version here to get it out to the public at least."Strangers in Danger, " was written from seeing a couple making out in front of a bar in Haughton, Louisiana after closing time after I had been at a friend, Rick Sterritt's house playing Bob Dylan and Eagles songs. "Need to Breathe," was written about frustrating relationships we can find ourselves in. "Her Man's Gone," was written while I worked as a DJ in a Neighborhood club in Dallas called "Charlie's bar" on Northwest Blvd, close to Harry Hines, then it was next to a topless club. "Seeing You, " was written shortly after my marriage, realizing we had problems and I was only fascinated in her body, but not her personality and I knew that's all see saw in me also. "Until I Met You, " was written one day when I thought about how good it felt sometimes when you are in a relationship and it seems to be working out. But I have struggled with this song and have several versions."Whiskey Talkin, " was inspired from a waitress in Shreveport when I hit on her, and she knew I was on my third drink. I actually wrote the song at a Planet Pizza while my daughter, Michele, and her friend, Electra, were playing. "Have a Good Time," was written at 3am after I came home from playing at an open mic in Denton, TX. I have had lots of complements on the feel of the song. The ending was kind of a mistake, but I kept the recorder on while the drumbeat continued and I am so glad. The original lyric was called "Let It Fly." "Perspective," was written around 2006 from a situation with some local people in the Denton music scene. " Road Stoned," was written while on a vacation in California, when we stopped at a truck stop and a guy was passed out in a couch. I was really wired from driving and smoking weed. Derrek Hutchings plays a lead track on this song, and excellent local bass player, Kris "chaos" from the band Enemies ...

The Father Teds are a U.K. based Irish band much admired for their world-class musicianship and their ability to put on a great show. 'Paddy's Day Parade', their new four track EP, features both original and traditional Irish material played to the highest standard. The title track, written by lead singer Rich McMahon, is inspired by real events, and tells the story of a band overcoming bad weather and a broken down trailer to entertain the thousands of people gathered in their home town for the St. Patrick's Day Parade. The song has enjoyed regular plays on U.K. and ...
