Futarino Orchesta music CDs
$11.79 MCDONALD AND GILES is a 1970 reissue that features former King Crimson members Ian McDonald - who went on to join Foreigner - and Michael Giles and includes "Suite In C," "Flight Of The Ibis," and "Is She Waiting?"
Following the meltdown of the original King Crimson lineup, Ian McDonald and Michael Giles brought brother Peter Giles back, which helps to account, in some ways, for the resemblance of this album to the 1968 Giles, Giles & Fripp recordings -- though the songs here tend to go on at some length, combining prog rock's traits of length and multiple sections with some of the lighter feel of the GG&F days. The 20 minute "Birdman" tends towards self-indulgence, while "People of Tomorrow (The Children of Today)" loses focus halfway and spends the next four minutes being a blithering -- if pretty -- musical idiot. The main attraction is really the performances turned in by McDonald and the Giles brothers -- they all sound fabulous, even when waffling musically, while Michael ...

| | Kevin Kane How To Build A Lighthouse CD (2007)
Futarino Orchesta songs
$11.89 Since the demise of the Grapes of Wrath in 2001, co-leader Kevin Kane has kept a low musical profile, releasing only a solo acoustic album, Timmy Loved Judas Priest, that consisted entirely of covers. His third solo release overall, How to Build a Lighthouse is Kane's first full-band album under his own name, with his own guitar and keyboards backed with bass, drums, and cello. The low-key arrangements keep Kane's vocals front and center, and he's in fine voice throughout: his wispy, breathy tenor has remained largely unchanged since the Grapes of Wrath's chart heyday. As a result, the overdubbed self-harmonies on the excellent opening track, "Last to Know," are sure to appeal to that breed of pop fans whose mental radios are permanently tunes to the 1970s AM band. Other highlights include the sparse, ghostly "Late Night," which has more of a Big Star Third/Sister Lovers vibe, and the closest thing to a rocker on this low-key album, the New Pornographers-like power pop of "No Black Dots." The oddly glammy, Redd Kross-style cover of Pink Floyd's "Arnold Layne" is good for a laugh as well, though it's strange that in three different places, the liner notes claim that "See Emily Play" is the song in question. Especially in the United States, where the Grapes of Wrath never broke beyond the college radio ghetto, it's easy for an album like How to Build a Lighthouse to disappear without a trace, but this is an enjoyable singer/songwriter album with a lot of subtle but effective pop hooks. ~ Stewart Mason
Singer/Songwriter for THE GRAPES OF WRATHMixed by Steven Drake (ODDS, TRAGICALLY HIP, 54-40)Mastered by Kramer (Low, Galaxie 500)Drums by Nelson Bragg (Brian Wilson Band)Kevin Kane's songs, voice, and guitar playing are very familiar to any Canadian to have turned on a radio or TV between the mid-80s and early 90s, for at the time his band The Grapes of Wrath rode a wave of hit singles, videos, albums and sold out concerts from coast to coast. How To Build a Lighthouse is Kevin's first full-band recording since the Grapes days and finds him joined by Nelson Bragg (Mockers, Brian Wilson Band) on drums, Stefan Bienz on upright and longhorn bass, and Christina Zaenker's layered cellos and vocals. It is Kevin's most varied and dynamic collection of music and was produced by Kevin, mixed by Steven Drake (The Odds, The Tragically Hip, 54-40), and mastered by Kramer (Low, Galaxy 500).Since his birth in the mid-60s, Kevin Kane has had an affinity the music of that era. Growing up in Kelowna, BC, he met brothers Chris and Tom Hooper, who shared his love of the Who, the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, and especially the Beatles. Inspired by the DIY attitude and immediacy of the blossoming punk rock and new wave movement, the three drove to Vancouver for a weekend to record their self-titled debut EP and within a couple of months, The Grapes Of Wrath themselves signed to the newly-formed Nettwerk label. The band went on to release 4 albums internationally through EMI, beginning with September Bowl Of Green (1985), gold-certified Treehouse (1987), and concluding with the platinum-selling Now and Again (1989) and These Days (1991). The Grapes disbanded the following year, but reformed from 1998 and 2001, releasing Field Trip on a now-defunct label.Aside from his work with the Grapes of Wrath, Kevin has released 2 solo acoustic albums, both of which met with critical acclaim and enthusiasm from Grapes fans and a whole new audience who have discovered Kevin's ...
