Longtime fans of Sepultura who feared that ex-leader Max Cavalera would conform to the tempting (and lucrative) alternative music scene upon his departure need not worry. Like his last release with Sepultura, the superb Roots, experimentation (Brazilian tribal drumming/rhythms, samples, unearthly sound effects, etc.) is a catalyst here on Soulfly, but gut-wrenching heavy metal is the foundation for almost all of the tracks. The energy and intensity don't let up for a second throughout this debut, as heard on the grinding tracks "Eye for an Eye," "Bumbklaatt," and "The Song Remains Insane." Max had stated in interviews his fondness for reggae legend Bob Marley, and the title track proves to be his first foray into reggae/dub territory (and serves as a nice break from the rest of the album's over the top metal). The album also contains guest appearances by several leading hard rockers -- Chino Moreno from the Deftones, Fred Durst and DJ Lethal from Limp Bizkit, Eric Bobo from Cypress Hill, and Burton C. Bell, Dino Cazares, and Christian Olde Wolbers from Fear Factory. Soulfly is the perfect vehicle for Cavalera's unique heavy metal vision, and a great way to kick off the second part of his recording career. ~ Greg Prato

Those familiar with Trustkill staples like Poison the Well, Walls of Jericho, or Nora know that the label means business when it comes to presenting some of the most brutally dynamic hardcore in America. No different is Eighteen Visions. Filled with metallic venom, the band attacks with a very loose style of hardcore that's filled with heavy bass riffing, relaxed drumming, and disharmonic guitar squeals. This creates a landscape of sound instead of a tight, technical composition. Mid-paced guitar work, with occasional bursts of enraged speed and blast beats, typify the album, along with a Will Haven-ish vocal style, tongue-in-cheek, socially conscious lyrics, and some scattered slow, melodic vocal parts -- ŕ la Poison the Well. Samples from a TV program with Elvis as well as movies from The Shining to Back to the Future characterize this pop culture obsessed release, as they intertwine effectively with the music. Few bands in this genre own this skill. "Champagne and Sleeping Pills" is a standout track, filled with noisy dynamics that cross Will Haven's sloppy but stylish and inventive playing with PTW's melodic textures. At a time when Swedish hard rock is undergoing a rebirth of sorts, many bands are staking their claim to a piece of the action. Stockholm’s Fatal Smile have more to offer than most and are only too happy to prove that to anybody prepared to listen...Formed in 1995 by guitarist Y following his arrival in Stockholm from his home town of Katrineholm, he wasted no time in putting together the band along with the bass player Markus Johansson and vocalist H.B.
