| | Human League Crash CD Human League Discography of CDs
(4 Customer Reviews)
Nothing short of a C&W album recorded in the heart of Nashville would seem as far removed from the Human League's early experimental art-noise roots as 1986's CRASH. Following the commercial and critical disappointment of 1984's underrated HYSTERIA, singers Phil Oakey, Joanne Catherall and Susanne Sulley parted with the instrumental axis of the Human League's hitmaking heyday and traveled to Minneapolis to record with ex-Prince protTgTs Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam, then at the top of the charts as the masterminds of Janet Jackson's CONTROL.
Jam and Lewis wrote and performed the songs on CRASH, with only occasional lyrical help from Oakey, and the results are fine mid-'80s pop-funk, even if they have almost nothing to do with the Human League's earlier records. The group was rewarded with the big American chart hit "Human," but from here on, every new Human League album was treated as a comeback attempt.
The Human League turned to American R&B producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis in the wake of their success with Janet Jackson's Control, and the combination brought the group its second number one hit with the Jam-Lewis composition "Human," which harked back to the earlier "Don't You Want Me," albeit with a gentler tone. The album's second single, the Control-soundalike "I Need Your Loving," was also a Jam-Lewis song (as was the U.K.-only third single, "Love Is All That Matters"), but the bulk of the album was made up of group-written songs with appealing backing tracks that maintained their dance appeal while eschewing the overtly synthesized sound of previous albums. That made Crash an improvement over the lackluster Hysteria, but still not on a par with Dare. [Crash was reissued in 2005 with remastered sound and extended mixes of "Human," "I Need Your Loving" and "Love Is All That Matters."] ~ William Ruhlmann

Crash
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed ...

| | Emily Lord Brand New Day CD (2005)
Crash
$15.95 Brand New Day gives voice to a generation of professional women balancing career, relationships, and motherhood. The album provides a window into the life of women who seek fulfillment in a complex world. Musically, the collection is heartland rock with threads of folk, country, and pop weaving their way into Lord’s smooth signature sound. Her style is reminiscent of a cross between Bob Seger and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Striking vocals, an upbeat vibe, organic instrumentation, and distinctive harmonies bolster Lord’s captivating lyrics. This album leaves you touched, moved, and inspired. Mark Hallman recorded and produced Brand New Day at The Congress House Studio in Austin, Texas. Among his list of production credits include a 2004 Grammy-nominated album with Eliza Gilkyson, a gold album with Carole King, and sound engineering and mentoring for indie-music icon Ani DiFranco. Brand New Day immediately draws you in with “One Day at a Time.” This upbeat song was inspired by Emily’s realization that she would soon become a mother; acknowledging that motherhood, of course, would forever change and enrich her life. “We put ‘One Day at a Time’ first because it was the defining experience in my life at the time of the recording and continues to be. This song isn’t about the idealized concept of motherhood – it is about acknowledging the joy, love, insecurity, excitement, and anxiety that comes with wondering, ‘what did I get myself into?’ Like other new moms, I worried about whether I was up for it.” In a riveting musical build, Lord speaks to the child growing inside of her: “There is something you should know; I can be so selfish and blind. But you must know that by now and despite it all your soul chose mine. If anyone can change me, I think maybe it’s you. I swear from this day forward I will live to be worthy of you – one day at a time.” The album also explores other themes of friendship, ...
