Rebounding from the death of its incomparable bassist, Roger Patterson, Atheist plunged ahead and released UNQUESTIONABLE PRESENCE in 1991. Even more complex and exploratory than PIECE OF TIME, UNQUESTIONABLE PRESENCE is considered one of the most influential metal albums of the early 1990s, inspiring artists like Death, Pestilence, Suffocation, and many others. Atheist's sound was enhanced by the addition of bassist Tony Choy (Cynic, Pestilence). The remastered edition features nine bonus tracks from the UNQUESTIONABLE PRESENCE recording sessions (featuring Patterson), along with extensive biographical information.
Despite the very positive reception that had greeted their bold first album, Atheist almost didn't last long enough to finish their second. Taking a break from recording to embark on a short tour, the band suffered a terrible blow when founding bassist Roger Patterson was killed in a horrifying Louisiana highway van crash. Shattered, but determined to finish their friend's last project at all costs, the remaining members drafted session bassist Tony Choy in order to get the job done, emerging with a landmark recording in the process. Indeed, whereas 1989's Piece of Time had been a shock, 1991's Unquestionable Presence was a revelation. With their sparing but highly effective use of melody (mostly nuances and accents during solos and choruses), challenging songs like "Unquestionable Presence," "Your Life's Retribution," and "Enthralled in Essence" advanced Atheist's uncompromisingly dense "death-jazz" to previously unscaled heights. Throughout the album, dissonant, lightning-speed guitar riffs, slap bass, and screwy time signatures collide to create a recipe at once more intricate and more approachable than its predecessor -- all the while keeping song lengths to manageable three to four minutes for maximum, concentrated impact. Matching the band's evident musical growth, vocalist Kelly Shaefer also stepped it up on the lyrical front, issuing inscrutably enigmatic, eyebrow-raising lines on par with the album's nearly impenetrable sonics. A daunting album to decipher, Unquestionable Presence is just as rewarding once decoded, and is still considered by experts to be one of the Floridian death metal scene's ultimate statements in progressive metal. [Unquestionable Presence's definitive CD reissue by Relapse Records renders any discussion about this being the ultimate Atheist album null and void; by including no less than eight pre-production demos containing the work of bassist and driving force Roger Patterson -- before his untimely passing prior to the actual album's recording. Granted, Patterson's singular talents were perhaps more noticeable on-stage than in the studio, and his replacement, Tony Choy, was no slouch himself, but there's no question that this rare material is what Atheist fans have been longing to hear. Additional upgrades include a pair of dissected versions of "Mother Man" and "And the Psychic Saw" (featuring separated bass and drum tracks, and rhythm tracks, respectively), full lyrics, informative liner notes, and reminisces from vocalist/guitarist Kelly Shaefer.] ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Progressive death-jazz attacks! From a technical standpoint alone, this album is jaw-dropping. Tony Choy's bass skill is incredible (and the late great Roger's lines are genius), the drummer's all over the kit, and the guitar team work effectively in orchestrating their parts around the bass, playing ferocious riffs, and laying down blistering solos. If you consider yourself a fan of progressive technical metal like Cynic or Watchtower, this is a must. Submitted by mcsavage (Pittsburgh, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
triumph over tragedy At long last, the sophomore masterpiece of Floridian legends Atheist has finally seen a fitting re-release! Truly one of the most important & underrated bands in the metal genre. This re-issue also includes demo recordings with the late, great Roger Patterson on bass, which is extra special considering the tragic circumstances in which he died whilst the album was in it's early stages. This album is a must for fans of cutting-edge extreme music. No doubt the re-issue of the Atheist back-catalogue will introduce them to a new legion of followers,as well as pleasing their existing fanbase.Truly groundbreaking. Brilliant The review on this isn't long.
Simply, if you are smart enough to have looked up this band then you are smart enough to enjoy this music.
This was a band that was truely ahead of their time in their aproach to metal. I have been waiting for 3 years for this album to come out and am not disapointed, it is a classic in the history of metal. Submitted by Shawn Curran (Dallas, Tx) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$15.65 Chuck Schuldiner's Death got pretty clinical with the odd time signature, and Atheist got pretty busy with their complex arrangements, but Florida's Cynic simply threw the progressive metal playbook out the window. Their only official recording, 1993's ground breaking Focus, meshed metal and jazz on an unprecedented scale, and explored the creative possibilities of this strange musical hybrid to a degree which has yet to be equaled. For Cynic, the traditional framework of ...
| | Atheist Elements CD (1993) Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Unquestionable Presence
$11.39 Moving further away from the confines of metal, Atheist's third and final release, ELEMENTS, is an exercise in progressive, technical musicianship. Less bound by song composition and more geared towards musical exploration, Atheist cracks the mold once again, incorporating touches of flamenco and funk into its already massive sound base. The remastered edition features six bonus tracks from a live radio broadcast in 1992, plus extensive biographical ...
| | Atheist Piece Of Time CD (1990) Remastered
Unquestionable Presence
$12.15 Atheist turned the extreme metal world on its head with its 1989 debut release, PIECE OF TIME. Breaking many of the conventions of death metal at the time, Atheist was a band years ahead of its time, pioneering the sounds that would later be called technical or progressive death metal. Armed with musicians with a penchant for jazz, Atheist's debut was a complex riff-frenzy that is only today becoming appreciated. The remastered edition features nine bonus demo tracks from Atheist's early days and extensive biographical information.
Recorded in 1988, released in Europe in 1989, but only made available in the U.S. a year after that, Atheist's first album, ...

During the 15 years following Deep Purple's initial split in 1976, singer/bassist Glenn Hughes issued albums on an extremely sporadic basis. Then came the early '90s (which saw Hughes get clean and sober), and the floodgates opened once more, as Hughes began feverishly making up for lost time -- issuing 17 albums between 1992 and 2005, both as a solo ...
