As progressive and ambitious as Mary Lou Williams's work could be, it was always rooted in the blues, so it comes as no surprise that 1977's MY MAMA PINNED A ROSE ON ME honors and exalts the influence of the blues form. Gospel-inspired vocalist Cynthia Tyson steps up to the mic on two tracks here (and these are among several standouts on the album). Williams's deft piano playing is center-stage throughout, as is the sinuous bass playing of Buster Williams. The lack of drums and conventional rhythmic structures help keep MY MAMA airy and light, even while Williams and company bring it all home in rootsy fashion.

In the 1960s, trumpeter Miles Davis became a star outside of the jazz world, first with what history refers to as "the Quintet" with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock, then with his highly influential post-BITCHES BREW electric bands. But there was a "transitional" period, after John Coltrane left Davis's employ and before the Shorter/Hancock era, which the SEVEN STEPS box set based around the SEVEN STEPS TO HEAVEN album documents in its entirety, often in a live context.
Davis was seeking the right combination of ...
| | Mary Lou Williams Mary Lou's Mass CD (1975)
My Mama Pinned A Rose On Me CD music
$14.49 Like many such ambitious conceptual projects, Mary Lou's Mass wasn't quite as impressive in its results as it was in its artistic scope. It's more or less acceptable, successful gospel-jazz fusion, sometimes vocal, sometimes instrumental. While the vocal selections seem to be aiming to be uplifting and inspirational, sometimes they can get a bit hokey in their abundance of cheer. The musical tone, while commendably eclectic, is uneven, from deft piano bop and Latin-tinged rousers to funky gospel stompers, down-home bluesy piano interludes, and melodramatic solo vocal turns. [The material on the 2005 CD version of Mary Lou's Mass is not identical to the tracks that came out on the 1975 LP release of the same title. Mary Lou Williams' "mass" was an ambitious work upon which composition dated back to the ...
| | Stanley Turrentine That's Where It's At CD (1962) Bonus Track; Remastered
My Mama Pinned A Rose On Me music CDs
$8.55 A Blue Note release with Les McCann on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Otis Finch on drums. Small group format. Excellent (and exciting) soul-jazz session with Turrentine blowing hot. ~ Ron Wynn & Michael Erlewine
This 1962 session places tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine in the company of pianist Les McCann, bassist Herbie Lewis, and drummer Otis Finch. Of the six cuts on the original release, McCann, who was already in serious soul-jazz territory, wrote four. His meaty three- and four-chord figures are prominently placed and, as always, his sense of time and swing are everywhere. "Smile, Stacey" kicks it off in full blowing fare with Turrentine walking the line between soul-jazz and hard bop like a tightrope. His earthy tone is particularly muscular and quick here. His own blues ballad, "Soft Pedal Blues," follows, with Turrentine doing his best Ben Webster with slow, smoky breathy tones and McCann trilling across the top on the turnarounds. ...

| | Enigma Voyageur (Deluxe) CD (2003) Special Package
My Mama Pinned A Rose On Me songs
$11.55 In 1991, if any musical artist seemed a candidate for one-hit wonder status, it was Enigma. Not that "Sadeness Part 1" displayed any lack for talent, but the hit was certainly unusual. Worthy of his nom du disc, Michael Cretu released the bizarre, sexually charged Gregorian chant-driven New Age dance song under veils of mystery. Journalists ...
