After modest success in their native Oxford, England, with 2002's staid alt-rock debut, One Eyed Poker, the Thieves -- guitarist/singer Hal Stokes, bassist Sam Stokes, and drummer Jamie Dawson -- began distilling a stiff blend of U.K. pub rock and cutting power pop. Recording in England with producer Lenny Franchi in early 2004, the Thieves struck pay dirt with the song "Tales from the White Line," a big rock anthem brimming with big guitar hooks, rumbling basslines, power drumming, and Hammond organ accents. Moving to Los Angeles, the Thieves hit Royaltone Studios with burgeoning producer/engineer Chris Brown (Radiohead, Muse), resulting in a four-song EP, The White Line. Between sessions with Brown and a relentless touring schedule (kept even when Stokes severely broke an ankle), the full album Tales from the White Line was completed in 2005. From the steely opening riff of "Gimme Some Lip" to the funky slide guitar jam of "Silverliner," Tales is awash with affable Brit harmonies and delights in unabashed, snap-tight songwriting. "You Get It Easy," "This Road (It Never Leaves Us)," "Everynite," and "Don't You Lose Me" are just a few of the 12 arresting gems also enhanced by the playing of guest keyboardists Rami Jaffee (Wallflowers) and Ben Cullum (brother of Jamie Cullum). The CD package is completed by Kazuto Maekawa's intriguing cover artwork, and the inside liner notes contain charming handwritten lyrics and doodles that blueprint each song. Whether or not the Thieves are ever found guilty of being overly inspired by classic '70s albums by AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, and the Who, Tales from the White Line is nevertheless a deviously good rock & roll record. ~ Craig Curtice

We recorded 'Tales from the White Line' at Royal Tone Studios (Audioslave, No Doubt, Courtney Love...) in Burbank, CA. We got Chris Brown back on the desk for production duties and went in with a load of songs we'd written whilst living in LA. We got more into production on this record than the last, with synths, keys, percussion, theramins and as much crazy experimentation as our minds could come up with. Was a really fun record to make up until Hal broke his ankle. He had to fly back to England and have his ankle screwed back together again. So he had to do all his vocals sitting down and was in a huge amount of pain. In the end though the record came together really well and ended up sounding really massive. It's definitely driving music, so get in your car and turn it up loud!

The CD version of TELECOMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN can be played using either a multimedia equipped computer (for sound and pictures) or an audio CD player. Included is a floppy disc interactive CD booklet. Samples include "Jungle Boogie" (as performed by Kool & The Gang), "Foxy Lady" (Jimi Hendrix), "Taxi Driver" (Bernard Hernmann) and "Aladdin Sane" (David Bowie). This is an elaborate treat that snuck past a lot of critics and potential audience when it was released back in 1995. The packaging for the CD came with some serious multimedia perks; certainly ahead of its time. The built-in CD-ROM features allow the listener/viewer the option of going through the whole disc with its own CD player software, occasionally alerting the viewer to videos where applicable. There are three altogether, but always available are some basic television images flashing on the computer screen plus controls to modify them (fast, slow, distorted, etc.). Lyrics are available to scroll down for each track, ...

The band was originally formed in the late 80's by Shaun McGowan (vocals and bass) and David Foster (guitar) while they were attending the Leigh college of music. Completing the lineup for this, their final outing, are Kieran Twist (keyboards), Leon Parr (drums) and Charlotte Evans (backing vocals). It is worth mentioning that 'The Overlap' was the first album to be released on Steve Rotherey's Dorian label and, furthermore, Steve contributes to the album with a guitar solo on the track 'Coup de Grace'. Also noteworthy is the excellent production on the album - but with Mike Stobbie at the helm I would honestly expect nothing less.Broadly speaking, the band can be categorised as a neo-progressive outfit, but - and please don't be put off by the fact - the music has a tendency to lean more towards the pop end of the spectrum. Certainly the sound can be very involved and full of complexity where required, but the main emphasis seems to be on creating strong songs and lyrics backed by solid musicianship rather than simply adopting the rather more showy keyboard style so often associated with bands of this type. 'Metaphor' opens the album with some strident keyboard work which quickly fades away in favour of the gentler vocal melody, which is very similar to Rick Wakeman's 'Softsword'. The song is a good opener and has a strong up beat mood and, while the vocals are smooth and crisp, it is the lead guitar work in mid section instrumental break that really makes this track for me - very powerful stuff! A complete change of mood comes with 'Spacewalk'. The song follows a doomed astronaut (there seem to be an awful lot of them about) contemplating his fate and, while the ...
