I live in the UK and saw this wonderful band live. They appeared on the BBC television series Jazz625 which has never been released on VHS or DVD so when I saw this release I confirmed with CD Universe that it was all regions and ordered it. I was not disapointed, what a band, Bill Chase, Sal Nistico, Nat Pearce, Chuck Andrus, Jake Hanna and all the guys swing like mad. If you are a Herman fan..Buy It.
As a previous reviewer said, an audience would have given it more atmosphere but this is Woody's 1964 Herd at it's best.

What a wonderful swinging band and outstanding soloists

Woody Herman's "Swingin' Herd" of the mid-1960s period was one of his best, although it is not well represented in the catalogue. This Canadian DVD makes a good companion piece to the three Jazz Casual programs on DVD of the same vintage (1963-1964). The band plays with precision and drive and the solo power is impressive, with Sal Nistico, Bill Chase, Phil Wilson, Nat Pierce and Woody himself. The program contains a surprising number of new versions of First Herd classics, like Apple Honey, Caldonia and Sidewalks of Cuba. The only minor quibbles are the slightly grainy black and white TV image in places (though quite watchable) and the lack of an audience to add some atmosphere. But all Woody and big band fans should grab this one.

Although Bill Holman is one of the all-time great arrangers and the leader of a stirring big band in the Los Angeles area, this was his first recording as a leader in seven years. Performed at a Maynard Ferguson tribute convention/festival put on by Ken Poston, the music played by the Bill Holman Orchestra is a little more boppish than usual for a Holman set, particularly the romping "Zoot 'n' Al," a tribute to Zoot Sims and Al Cohn. However, Holman's arrangements are quite complex, full of surprises and full of excitement. Whether it be a major reworking of the Beatles' "A Day in the Life" and Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee," or such originals as "Woodrow" (for Woody Herman) and "The Bebop Love Song," the music is full of surprising twists and turns. The solos are uniformly excellent from the impressive crew of Los Angeles-area players, but it is the Holman arrangements that are most unique. Highly recommended to fans of modern jazz big bands. ~ Scott Yanow
