The sisters Casady set the weirdness bar awfully high on their homemade debut, LA MAISON DE MON REVE, but this inspired follow-up finds the bar ascended as the angels take it on the road, recording everywhere from barnyards to actual music studios. As usual, classically trained vocalist Sierra delivers the delirious operatic vocalizing and plays piano, dulcimer, and autoharp while Bianca coos like a 12-year old vampire Billie Holiday and makes percussive noise from computers and shakers with equal abandon.
The difference here is in the confidence, the polish, and the guest stars: Antony (of Antony & the Johnsons) singing and playing piano on the movingly transgressive "Beautiful Boyz," Devendra Banhart sampled from what sounds like an old scratchy 78 (actually a phoned-in vocal) on "Brazilian Sun," and French rapper Spleen laying it down on the intro of "Bisounours." There are also horses and cats ("Bear Hides & Buffalo"), and off-kilter tambourine and ambient, cricket-soaked fog on the old-timey "Armageddon." No sophomore slump this, if anything it's even weirder for all the added talent, flourishes, and polish.

This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close ...

An enchanting debut, CocoRosie's La Maison de Mon Rêve is a dreamy yet challenging confection of found sounds, folk-blues, trip-hop, girlish pop, and experimental recording and production techniques. The Casady sisters' breathy, slightly different, but equally lovely vocals circle each other atop delicately plucked and strummed acoustic guitars, chirping birds, and fractured beats, making for a sound that is hard to define outside of its own beauty and creativity. A strong Billie Holiday influence colors the sisters' vocals, particularly on La Maison de Mon Rêve's most accessible songs, but even then, CocoRosie isn't so much aping Lady Day as it is invoking her style in unique ways. Layers of crickets, birds, pianos, and intensely sweet backing vocals make "By Your Side" an unusually intimate and spontaneous-sounding, while lyrics like "I'd wear your black eyes/Bake you apple pies" give it a subversive, feminist angle. "Butterscotch" mixes ethereal sensuality with a mischievous sense of humor, and "Good Friday"'s whispered remembrances make it the most romantic moment on La Maison de Mon Rêve, which -- as if it needed any more romance -- was ...

In early 2005, young indie icon Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes) unveiled two full-length albums--I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING and DIGITAL ASH IN A DIGITAL URN. Whereas the latter proved to be a departure into electronic music, the former sticks to Oberst's established sound, which combines the urgency and heart-on-the-sleeve sentiment of emo-rock with twangy, down-home feel of alt-country and folk music.
I'M WIDE AWAKE begins with Oberst telling a story that morphs into "At the Bottom of Everything," a jangly, upbeat tune featuring My Morning Jacket's Jim James on backing vocals. Though he probably achieved his greatest mainstream recognition backing up Lou Reed on tour, idiosyncratic songbird Antony is a fully established artiste in his own right. Backed by the Johnsons, as on I AM A BIRD NOW, he crafts delicate ballads that skirt the lines between cabaret, artsong, and pop, with the kind of voice that Stephin Merritt would probably kill for. With CALIFORNIA, Mr. Bungle has largely ditched its infamous jazz/thrash/circus sound (especially evident on the group's first album) for an even more varied cinematic aesthetic that both embraces and gleefully subverts traditional pop structures. Simply put, this is probably as accessible as Bungle is bound to get, and the results are amazing in both their inventiveness and scope. (As stated in the album's tongue-in-cheek press release, CALIFORNIA shows "evidence of a rock band pretending to have roots in rock music.")
Opening with the lounge-laced "Sweet Charity," the album soon shifts to the sci-fi rockabilly/swing stylings of "None of Them Knew They Were Robots" and then to the crooning melodic pop of "Retrovertigo." On other dynamic compositions such as "The Air-Conditioned Nightmare" and "Goodbye Sober Day," Bungle's quick-change genre-hopping is surprisingly seamless, with vocal gymnast Mike Patton acting as the conductor, narrator, and tour guide. "Pink Cigarette" is pure pulp-mystery music, while "The Holy Filament" wouldn't sound out of place on the BRAZIL soundtrack. Although these songs are ridiculously layered with hundreds of instrument and vocal tracks, CALIFORNIA doesn't sound overly complex, revealing only the finest of Mr. Bungle's warped yet playful traits.

This CD is striking for its charming naïveté and insouciance. Sagor & Swing is Ulf Möller on drums and Eric Malmberg on a good old organ with a Leslie cabinet, the exact same one that Bo Hansson used to record his LP Lord of the Rings. The 11 short instrumental pieces all feature a delicate melody, light accompaniment from Malmberg's left hand, and soft drumming, usually with padded mallets.
