So Many Roads is Hammond's most notable mid-'60s Vanguard album, due not so much to Hammond's own singing and playing (though he's up to the task) as the yet-to-be-famous backing musicians. Three future members of the Band -- Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson, and Levon Helm -- are among the supporting cast, along with Charlie Musselwhite on harmonica, and Mike Bloomfield also contributes. It's one of the first fully realized blues-rock albums, although it's not in the same league as the best efforts of the era by the likes of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band or John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. In part that's because the repertoire is so heavy on familiar Chicago blues classics by the likes of Willie Dixon, Bo Diddley, and Muddy Waters; in part that's because the interpretations are so reverent and close to the originals in arrangement; and in part it's also because Hammond's blues vocals were only okay. Revisionist critics thus tend to downgrade the record a notch. But in the context of its time -- when songs like "Down in the Bottom," "Long Distance Call," "Big Boss Man," and "You Can't Judge a Book By the Cover" were not as well known as they would become -- it was a punchy, well-done set of electric blues with a rock touch. ~ Richie Unterberger

A mid-price release of Hammond's 1965 album of blues covers. The son of legendary talent scout John Hammond Sr, who discovered Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen amongst others, John Jr has recorded over 30 albums. His Vanguard releases are consistent sellers. This release was notable for including three future members of The Band - Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson and Levon Helm. Also contributing are Charlie Musselwhite and Mike Bloomfield. Vanguard Masters. 2005.

Includes original release liner notes by Barry Kittleson.

Personnel includes: John Hammond (vocals, guitar); Robbie Robertson (guitar); Charlie Musselwhite (harmonica); Michael Bloomfield (piano); Garth Hudson (Hammond organ); Jimmy Lewis (bass); Levon Helm (drums).

Molly Hatchet 25th Anniversary: Best Of Re-Recorded CD  (2004)

So Many Roads album
CD $13.85  4 stars Audio Samples
The award for being the best band to imitate Molly Hatchet is....Molly Hatchet. On this 25th Anniversary re-recording of the band's biggest hits -- and best tracks from each of their albums, from their self-titled debut to Lightning Strikes Twice -- the current incarnation of MH, led by guitarist and producer Bobby Ingram, offers startlingly faithful reads of the original band's material. What makes this so unique is that there are no original members of MH in this lineup, and singer Phil McCormack sounds so much like founding vocalist Danny Brown it's almost scary. Admittedly, with this description, it is tempting to write the Hatch off without a listen, but that would be a mistake. These are not reinterpretations of the classics, nor are they toothless renderings. The big, roaring guitars that sound like chainsaws in the Everglades are abundant, trashy, full of loud and proud rowdiness that makes Southern Rock so singular in both its excesses and in its battered, drunken heart. Given how much a part of rock & roll history these songs are, it is unfair and unwarranted to compare these versions with the original performances. The way in which an album like this makes the most sense -- especially ...

By Popular Demand
Barbara Blue By Popular Demand CD  (2007)

So Many Roads songs
CD $15.39
The British compilation By Popular Demand is essentially an expanded edition of Barbara Blue's Sell My Jewelry album, adding a few tracks from three of her other releases (Out of the Blue, Memphis 3rd & Beale, and Love Money Can't Buy). On the 12 songs that originally comprised the Sell My Jewelry album, Blue presented a gutsy set of soulful contemporary blues with the backing of Taj Mahal's Phantom Blues Band. There's nothing groundbreaking about Blue, the songs, or the arrangements, but she has a powerful throaty voice, often used on songs playing up to a "tough mama" persona. The band gives her able support that draws soul music influences into the blues context, using organ and horns as well as the staple guitar and rhythm section. Blue wrote a bit of the material, but most of it's devoted to songs by other writers, including Janis Joplin ("Turtle Blues"), Lucinda Williams ("Drunken Angel"), and Rod Piazza (co-writer of "Brought Together by the Blues"), though the other composers won't be familiar names ...
