Although recorded in the studio, this CD gives listeners a good example of what a live performance by harpist/vocalist Deborah Henson-Conant was like in the mid-1990s. The music ranges from some jazz (particularly "Beck's Blues") to vocal folk ballads and philosophical pieces. Henson-Conant has a pretty voice, and even if her singing is largely outside of jazz, it is full of humor, good cheer and intelligence. Her "Congratulations" (an alternative birthday song) has usually been a crowd pleaser, and her use of overdubbing on a couple tracks to achieve multiple voices is tastefully done. ~ Scott Yanow

More than most jazz lite artists, Peter White flaunts a restless improvisational sense, which is fully evident on Glow. Aside from a few incidental fills tossed into the breeze by this or that horn player, this is entirely White's show. His performance on all these tracks, typically over a backdrop of gauzy major-seventh string pads, provides a lesson in long-form jamming against a steady, sensuous backbeat, with octave passages and a buoyant rhythm feel that echo Wes Montgomery. Despite these similarities, White displays a distinctive sound, with blues and Spanish influences perfuming his romantic phrases. English glam rockers Slade's NOBODY'S FOOLS includes "Do the Dirty" and "L.A. JINX."
Nobody's Fools has some really great songs on it, but all things considered it was the band's worst album at that point (at least under the name Slade). Basically misguided from the get-go, Nobody's Fools is constantly trying to free itself from the oppressive production and arrangements. Slade had been living in the U.S.A. for a couple of years at this point. Their mega-success everywhere else in the world was never duplicated here in the U.S. While they were here and trying to figure out how to crack the American market, someone came up with the brilliant idea of making a record with a "California" sound. Unfortunately, not meaning Montrose or the Flamin' Groovies -- that would've been cool. No, this means the dreaded Eagles and Jackson Browne. Many of the numbers on this record are loaded with Dobros, mandos, and female background vocals, and, frankly, it just doesn't work. As was stated before, the album does have some really strong material (though not as consistent as usual). The title track is excellent, but marred by a bad arrangement.
