There are some bands that -- although not huge in the rock world -- still enjoy a small cult following that really swears by them. Zodiac Mindwarp & the Love Reaction is such a band. Their trashy, decadent approach to hard rock, garage rock, and glam rock never made leader Mark Manning a mega-superstar, but despite flying under the radar all these years, Zodiac have maintained some die-hard admirers who still sing their praises. And those hardcore followers will find this 2005 release to be a likable party album even though it isn't in a class with '80s discs like Tattooed Beat Messiah and High Priest of Love. Drawing on influences that include AC/DC, T. Rex, Alice Cooper, the Rolling Stones, and MC5, Rock Savage rejects the ultra-introspective tendencies that have characterized so many alternative rock releases in the '90s and 2000s. If anything, Rock Savage is what could be described as an anti-introspective album; dirty, beer-soaked, sex-obsessed fun is still Manning's forte, and he maintains his allegiance to hooky '70s and '80s rock on tracks like "Nowhere," "Hog Mama," "Let It Fall," and "I Don't Like It." The material sounds quite dated and clichéd by mid-2000s rock standards -- for that matter, it is quite dated and clichéd by mid-'90s standards -- but dated isn't necessarily a negative if one worships a particular era, and the era of bad-boy '70s/'80s party rock is fondly remembered on this CD. Most longtime followers will likely agree that Rock Savage isn't the band's strongest album and that The Best of Zodiac Mindwarp & the Love Reaction on Spectrum Records would be a better starting point, but for faithful Zodiac devotees, Rock Savage is a decent, if less than essential, addition to their catalog. ~ Alex Henderson
Long awaited follow up to 2002's album 'I am rock' this album was recorded in London and produced by Ingo Vauk (Bowie,Soft cell). Savage rock, 13 tracks you won't forget in a hurry.

| | Scorpions Animal Magnetism CD (1980)
Rock Savage CD music
$6.49 Although Animal Magnetism contains such classic songs as "The Zoo" and "Make It Real," the album is somewhat disappointing when compared to its predecessor, Lovedrive. The well-written songs on this album end up saving it from total disaster, and it's obvious the band wasn't sure what to exactly put on this record -- many of the songs sound like the work of some other rock group and simply don't blend together as they should. Singer Klaus Meine, known for his excellent vocal performances, sounds bored and just plain overshadowed. Although far from bad, Animal Magnetism isn't ...
| | Dethklok Metalocalypse: Dethalbum II CDs (2009) Bonus DVD; Deluxe Edition
Rock Savage music CDs
$15.55 Brendon Small and Gene Hoglan proved their animated death metal band Dethklok had the chops to rock out like a living, breathing group on THE DETHALBUM. On DETHALBUM II, Small and Hoglan make Dethklok sound more like a real band than ever before--for better and worse. Without a doubt, these songs rock hard. The production is tighter and the attack is even heavier than it was on the first album, but surprisingly, that ends up being a slight weakness rather than a strength. What made THE DETHALBUM special was that the songs were funny, but not jokey; tried and true metal fans could appreciate the humor that was mixed into the heaviness, while the wit drew in metal neophytes. But on DETHALBUM II, Small and Hoglan have gotten so good at lovingly embodying metal clichés that the songs aren't as overtly funny or catchy as they were on the first album. Some ...

| | Slayer God Hates Us All CD (2001)
Rock Savage album
$9.05 "Disciple" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
Don't blink. Otherwise, Slayer's eighth studio release will scoot right by at hyper-speed. In fact, morbid images and jackhammer guitar riffs are the only traces that GOD HATES US ALL leaves behind on its demolition path. Heavy, indeed. If lead screamer Tom Araya slows down just for a second, dark mantras such as "I won't be force-fed prophecy" and "My hate is contagious" become frighteningly intelligible. Slayer might not be pretty, but no one can accuse the band of campiness--this is as real (and scary) as it gets.

| | Katatonia Great Cold Distance CD (2006)
Rock Savage CD music
$16.19 Coming three full years after 2003's Viva Emptiness, The Great Cold Distance continues the trend toward the mainstream that Katatonia began with that album. Singer Jonas Renske -- who apparently lost his ability to do the now-clichéd Cookie Monster vocals some years ago due to medical problems -- has refined his voice into a much smoother and, surprisingly, more powerful instrument that's capable of greater emotional shadings. Similarly, this album forsakes the blastbeats and hyperspeed riffing for a more dynamic sound that makes smart use of slow and quiet passages. They're still heavy: "Deliberation" and "Leaders" are as brutal as anything on the band's career high point, Last Fair Deal Gone Down. But that heaviness is set off by gems like the surprisingly restrained "In the White," a powerful and heartfelt song that's among the band's finest, and that sonic variety makes The ...

Principally recorded at Soflight, Wow Sound Studios, Melbourne, Australia.
The creation of dark and spectral soundscapes seems almost de rigueur for electronica artists. Not so for the Avalanches, a six-member DJ ensemble from Australia. In fact, the group's debut, SINCE I LEFT YOU, was the most feel-good slab of sample-centered electronica to come down the pike in ages. Though tied to house, trance, and other styles of the postmodern DJ tradition, this album presents a sense of openness, naivete, and promise. Familiar dance samples, childlike voices, choral refrains, funky breaks, and a gentle, oddly soothing avant-garde ...
