The Holy Mackerel was led by singer-songwriter Paul Williams, who later went on to have a very successful career as a commercially oriented songwriter for pop music and film, and also gained recognition as an actor. The band had a one-year life span, during which they released their sole album, 1968's THE HOLY MACKEREL. Though the album bears some of the pop smarts that would characterize Williams's '70s work, it is a product of its time: a psychedelic pop-rock outing with swirling melodies, Eastern-influenced modalities, reverb and phaser effects, and high-flown harmonies. It's a fun, pleasurable listen, and will be of more than passing interest to fans and collectors of obscure '60s nuggets.

Dismissed by the benighted as the Doors' "pop album," SOFT PARADE is one of the band's most adventurous recordings, utilizing strings and horns without resorting to schlocky over-production and moving far beyond their blues roots. Morrison was fully into his shaman phase by 1969, and his obsession with that image is reflected in the proselytizing air of "Tell All the People," and of course "Shaman's Blues." The album's biggest hit "Touch Me," while easily the group's most radio-friendly offering, is a pop classic that ranks among the great '60s AM radio tunes. Domestiques is the sound of the Delgados developing their songcraft. Everything is a bit more loose and jagged than on Peloton and The Great Eastern. Perhaps they hadn't yet mastered their instruments, or they were torn between the pop and punk aesthetics they would later straddle so masterfully. For the most part, the melodies and hooks aren't as strong as later material; maybe the album is missing a certain bittersweet quality. Sonically, things are about on par with the later albums, but there's less harmonizing and less interplay between the two lead vocalists. The songs here are also a bit noisier and less focused than later songs. At the same time, there are certainly some great hooks in the mix. Even when things don't take off fully on the flights of fancy for which the band would become known, the songwriting is always first-rate. It's quite fun to hear the sped-up catchiness and angst of "Sucrose" and "Friendly Conventions," which suggest that the band was then thinking of going the route of Bis. The Delgados really did come out of the gate as expert songwriters on this debut album. The best signs of things to come are found in "Akumulator," "4th Channel," and "Under Canvas Under Wraps."
