Ryan Shupe and his band of merry musician pranksters play a brand of eclectic, progressive country that cannot be categorized. Shupe's group, the Rubberband, is aptly named in that they stretch the backdrop of contemporary country as far as it will go, wrapping it around hip-hop, Latin, reggae, rock, and bluegrass elements. While the crazed, technically advanced musicianship dazzles throughout DREAM BIG, the real treat is Shupe's songs, which are full of memorable hooks and clever, quotable lyrics.

After the crossover effort of 2004's SPEND MY TIME, first-wave new traditionalist Clint Black returns to his roots on 2005's DRINKIN' SONGS & OTHER LOGIC. As the title suggests, this is a barroom-themed album, with a heavy dose of honky tonk that will undoubtedly make purists happy, and will make everyone else want to pop open a cold one. From the barroom boogie of the opening title track to the steel guitar-sweetened "Heartaches" to cry-in-your-beer ballads like "Go It Alone," DRINKIN' SONGS is Black's most solid effort in a long while.
At times Black missteps both musically and thematically. "Too Much Rock," for example, with its plodding tempo and its unnecessary and somewhat silly protest message against rock music, feels out of keeping with the album's feel. But those moments are the exception here, and when Black sticks to classic pick-and-twang, as he does admirably on songs like the album's closer, "Longnecks and Rednecks," ...

In spite of a long successful jazz career, many of tenor saxophonist Harry Allen's recordings have been for European and Japanese labels. So it is good to see him on a mainstream American label like Arbors, where he'll get greater exposure in his homeland. Joining him for this Frank Loesser songbook consisting of 14 songs from the Broadway musical and movie Guys and Dolls are guitarist Joe Cohn, bassist Joel Forbes, and drummer Chuck Riggs, with vocalists Rebecca Kilgore and Eddie Erickson added on most tracks. Allen is a consistent swinger with a pleasing tone that sometimes makes it sound like an alto, while Cohn is a guitarist of the Jim Hall school; he can play with the best of them but he knows how to leave plenty of space and not overplay his hand. Instead of using three vocalists singing rounds in "Fugue for Tinhorns," Allen, Cohn, and Forbes take their place in an intricate arrangement. While "If I Were a Bell," "'Luck Be a Lady," and "I've Never Been in Love Before" have long been standards for jazz musicians, it is the less frequently performed numbers that merit special attention.
