Additional personnel: Chingy, AMG , Jodeci, Ludacris, Nate Dogg, T.I., B Real, The Game, Wyclef Jean. If Henry Mancini had grown up composing music in Compton, it might have sounded something like the tracks on TRAUMA (INSTRUMENTALS). DJ Quik, a rapper/producer who began mining the West Coast hardcore/G-funk sound in 1991, is usually flanked by plenty of MCs, but this outing strips the vocal tracks from his TRAUMA album to display the groovy backing magic within. There is still a fair bit of old-school, bass-heavy bounce here, but the subtle symphony of horn lines, strings, guitar riffs, and other samples--which ends up sounding like a quirky soundtrack to a Blaxploitation film that never was--is surprisingly fun and interesting. DJ Quik is the essence of West Coast Hip-Hop, having been there from the early days when Compton was asserting itself as the voice of rap as the 1980s bled into the 1990s, and TRAUMA, the rapper/producer's seventh album and first in 3 years, finds Quik as relevant and potent in both lyrics and beats as when he dropped QUIK IS THE NAME. Never flashy, Quik finds art in simplicity, as with the laid-back groove of "Black Mercedes," and the rapid-fire spitting about relationships and distractions on "Catch 22." I know you can do it better Quik ! I was disapointed, I`m a Quikfan for life but his last albums were on a whole other level.I`m missing the the funk and soul from rhythm-a-lism and a real quiks groove! And where is Suga free, 2nd 2 none? I`m waiting till the next album. Submitted by oheckman (Marburg, germany) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Another classic The most underrated artist in the rap game has done it again. Excellent production, what else can we expect from Mr. DJ Quik? His lyrics are even better on this album, he really stepped up his game. This one is up there with The Chronic. Submitted by Jimmurder (Amsterdam) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Z-Ro Let The Truth Be Told CD (2005)
Trauma
$15.05 Personnel: Z-Ro; Juvenile, Paul Wall , Ashanti, Trae, Lil' Flip, Devin the Dude, Lil' Boss. True thug Z-Ro has an incredibly stuffed discography but his profile is surprisingly low. His style is hard -- think Nate Dogg with a Southern flavor -- but not underground or cerebral enough to keep him from blowing up big time, so what's the problem? If there's any justice, the solid Let the Truth Be Told will put the man over the top. Guest spots from Ashanti, Paul Wall, and Juvenile should help too, but if this all seems like a forced play for the mainstream, it's not. Seventeen songs and the album never sounds anything less than inspired, necessary even. Z-Ro's verbal sparring with Devin the Dude makes "The Mule" a standout, "Platinum" and "Everyday, Samethang" are sure to figure ...
| | Warren G In The Mid-Nite Hour CD (2005)
Trauma
$10.59 Personnel: Frank Lee White, Mike Jones , Nate Dogg, Raphael Saadiq, Snoop Dogg, B Real, Bishop Lamont (rap vocals). In the Mid-Nite Hour is Warren G's first foray into the land of independent releases and, consequently, marks a huge shift in approach from the too-many-cooks-in-the-kitchen approach that had sunk his final album for Universal, The Return of the Regulator. This album is 100 percent Warren G, make no mistake, and its D.I.Y. feel seems fitting for the sort of guy who produces his own beats as well as raps his own songs. Granted, In the Mid-Nite Hour isn't going to re-establish Warren as the hitmaker that he was for a quick second back in the G-funk era when "Regulate" was the jam. It's simply too real to get picked up by urban radio or music television -- that is, real like that beat-head dude living down your street who makes mixtapes in his bedroom and hands CD-Rs of them out to friends as well as complete strangers. For that reason, In the Mid-Nite Hour ...

With THE SOUND OF REVENGE, Chamillionaire's 2005 Universal debut, the Houston-based rapper makes the most of his major-label deal, which includes his own Chamillitary imprint. On SOR, Paul Wall's former collaborator amps up that duo's signature chopped-and-screwed mixtape sound with heavy-duty arrangements that expertly showcase Chamillionaire's ...
