Freestyle album
$5.99 The finest example of perfect disco pop, and a record that should be prescribed to musical snobs and manic depressives. The album is a true ambassador of what pop music can be. Jackson whoops and dances through a suite of unforgettable melodies that should be danced to with a smile on your face. Each track offers at least one musical hook, whether it is the beauty of 'Human Nature' (who can resist the 'dada dada da da da') or the 'whoo whoo' of 'Billie Jean'. It's all too good.
Principally recorded at Westlake Audio, Los Angeles, California.

| | Melanie Fiona Bridge CD (2009)
Freestyle CD music
$9.99 Melanie Fiona's debut single, "Give It to Me Right," was a perfect 2009 pop-R&B recording. The single coupled a timeless classic (the Zombies' "Time of the Season") with roof-raising vocals and infectious pop hooks that stuck like peanut butter. Fiona's single was perfect, albeit a touch formulaic. Because of this, it's no surprise that a large chunk of her debut album, THE BRIDGE, is much of the same. Like any good 2009 pop-soul recording, the album offers influences from decades of soul music. Fiona, a Kanye West protégé, collaborates with about as many styles of music as she has producers and writers, who include most prominently Canadian R&B singer-songwriter Andrea Martin, Rob Fusari, Peter Wade Keusch, Sidh Solanki, Vada Nobles, Bill Blast, Future Cut, Stereotypes, Dan Strong, JK, Jay Fenix, and Affiliate. This mash-up of masterminds is a good thing; it offers the listener generous portions of put-together pop songs which color outside the lines in terms of genre. THE BRIDGE is the perfect launching pad for a solid career where she can further explore her possibilities as ...

It's always a sign that a group is hot if they release a holiday album mere months after their debut. That's the case with *NSYNC. Their debut was released in America in late March, and in early December, Home for Christmas hit the shelves. Much of the album is devoted to newer material, with only a handful of songs qualifying as standards: "The Christmas Song," "The First Noel," and "O Holy Night." All of it is given the familiar *NSYNC sheen, alternating between slickly produced adult contemporary ballads and lite dance-pop. Fans of the group will certainly find it reasonably enjoyable, even though it makes it clear that the group simply can't rival such peers as the Spice Girls or the Backstreet Boys in terms of charisma. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Chris Brown Graffiti CD (2009)
Freestyle songs
$11.18 Most of Graffiti is a natural progression for Chris Brown. Like many young cred-seeking male singers who have just exited their teenage years, Brown emphasizes womanizing and hedonism and balances it out with a couple clean and empty ballads, as well as a couple relatively lighthearted Europop numbers. A handful of songs deal with his relationship with Rihanna, as well as the fallout from his assault of her. ~ Andy Kellman
Most of Graffiti -- that is, the songs that do not detail what ex-girlfriend Rihanna and the rest of the world have done to him -- is a natural progression for Chris Brown. Like many young cred-seeking male singers who have just exited their teenage years, Brown clumsily emphasizes womanizing and hedonism and balances it out with a couple clean and empty ballads. Out of this portion of the album, only a couple songs leave a lasting impression, and when they do, the silly things that come out of Brown's mouth tend to be the reason; take "As stingy as you are, I think you ready," part of "Take My Time"'s chorus and hopefully no woman's idea of an effective bedroom line. A two-track patch of gloopy and gawky Europop, where he's on slightly better behavior, is at least more tolerable than the inane chest-puffing, but nothing comes close to the big singles from Brown's first two releases. The rest of this album could not have been voiced by anyone but a brat who pleaded guilty to the felonious assault of his pop star girlfriend, one who considers himself a victim. On "Famous Girl," sonically sprightly but otherwise acidic and full of contradictions, Brown cries foul at being cheated upon by his "heartless" ex but taunts "I might have cheated in the beginning." He accuses her of being a heartbreaker and then boasts "I've broken my share of hearts." ...
| | Charlie Wilson Uncle Charlie CD (2008)
Freestyle album
$8.99 As the lead singer for the Gap Band and the man behind such classics as "Steppin' Out" and "I Don't Believe You Wanna Get Up and Dance (Oops, Up Side Your Head)," Charlie Wilson has had as great an influence on the development of modern R&B as legends like George Clinton and Roger Troutman. Unlike those artists, Charlie Wilson is still capable of producing ...
| | Maxwell Blacksummers' Night CD (2009)
Freestyle CD music
$8.49 It's been eight long years between Maxwell's third and fourth studio albums. BLACKSUMMERS'NIGHT is the first release of a trilogy, with BLACKSUMMERS'NIGHT(rooted in gospel, with a twist, apparently) and BLACKSUMMERS'NIGHT(promised as a disc of slow jams) to follow. Just as Maxwell arrived in 1996, offering an alternative to the exaggerated masculinity that was dominating contemporary R&B, he returns when the airwaves are still stuffed with raging hormones. He has made no concessions to them however--the highly romantic BLACKSUMMERS'NIGHT is all devotion, regret, and heartache. Maxwell's backing musicians morph with every shift in emotion through arrangements that are unfailingly exquisite and sensitively nuanced, even when briskly played. And if the singer got into any adventures while he was away, he does not detail them during these 38 unified minutes. He did go through a serious, failed relationship however, just as "Pretty Wings," the album's floating pre-album single, suggests. Like the real-life flip side to Al Green's "Simply Beautiful"--which Maxwell performed at the 2008 BET Awards, signaling his return--it's catharsis through bittersweet elegance, as is the album as a whole.

| | Zoot Sims Plays Johnny Mandel: Quietly There CD (1984)
Freestyle music CDs
$9.65 Digitally remastered by JVC using XRCD (extended resolution compact disc).
Norman Granz's idea to match Zoot Sims' lyrical, swinging tenor sax with Johnny Mandel's equally arresting compositions was a masterful one. Sims' tart, alternately lush and furious solos were wonderfully spotlighted on such tunes as "Cinnamon and Cloves," "Emily" and "Zoot." The six-tune session, recently issued on CD, also contains effective piano solos from Mike Wofford. The date's tour-de-force was its final selection, the wonderful "Low Life," which Sims probed, illuminated and ultimately redefined via his solo. ~ Ron Wynn
Recorded in March 1984.

| | Twisted Black Late Bloomer CD (2003)
Freestyle album
$11.39 More than any other rapper in Dallas-Ft. Worth, Twisted Black (a.k.a. 145) is pioneering a defenitive version of gangster story telling. Instead of rolling with the typical flow of mainstream rap, Black strays from the hype and glorification of thugging, hustling and playing the ladies. His early albums "Look What the Streets Made" and "Contradictions" are classics in the urban sectors. Thirteen days following the release of contradictions, Black was incarcerated and unable to promote the album with his group. He began penning the groups third recording "Late Bloomer" while in prison, and has ...

| | Sounds Of Blackness Night Before Christmas II CD (2004)
Freestyle music CDs
$11.59 Sounds of Blackness released their first Christmas album, Night Before Christmas: A Musical Fantasy, back in 1992. Produced by Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam, one of the most dominant urban production teams of the 1980s, it was full of the big, cavernous, and somewhat trippy R&B sound the duo specialized in, and the result, at least to some ears, was more bombast than innovative, a problem that is at least somewhat addressed in Night Before Christmas, Vol. 2, which was recorded in 2004 with Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam notably not aboard. Sounds of Blackness specialize in what might be called urban fusion gospel with a strong theatric base, and for this holiday album they've turned up the percussion on everything, so these tracks fly along on enough energetic polyrhythms to keep Santa jivin' forever. Although it's a little disconcerting to hear "Silent Night" sung to looped drums, the truth is, somebody had to do it eventually, so why not Sounds of Blackness? One of the best tracks here is "Do the Funky Chitlin'," which is, well, hugely funky, if only marginally seasonal. The final three cuts are instrumental backing tracks, and they're wonderfully huge in sound, with massed horns and strong, bold string arrangements (especially the jazzy big-band take of "Holiday Love 2"). In the end, this second volume seems less forced and more fun that the first installment, and the omnipresent drums alone will get you dancing as you hang those stockings with ease. ~ Steve Leggett
Sounds of Blackness: Geoffrey Evean Jones (vocals, rap vocals); Chreese Jones (vocals, soprano); Cynthia 'Funkytown' Johnson (vocals, alto); Robert Edwards (vocals, tenor); Geoffrey Jones, Billy Steele (vocals, baritone); Core' S. Cotton, Bridget Dawkins, Patricia Lacy-Aiken, Carrie M. Harrington, Andrea Tribitt, Cornisha Garmon, David Hurst, Terry Garmon (vocals); Karl Demer (rap vocals, drum programming); Angela Henderson, Jayn Higgins (soprano); Carrie Harrington, Sandra ...
| | Tru 2 Da Game CDs (1997)
Freestyle songs
$16.39 Ten years after the New Orleans super-group TRU (comprised of Master P, Sillk the Shocker, and C-Murder) smashed the world with their sophomore album, TRU 2 DA GAME, the monumental double CD returns in this re-issue from EMI. TRU 2 DA GAME features a number of No Limit favorites including the 7-minute posse cut, "No Limit Soldiers," as well as the crew's paranoid shout to Rockwell on "I Always Feel Like." Mia X, Kane & Abel, Mo B. Dick, Big Ed, and Serv-On all make cameos. This is a Dirty South classic and a must-have for fans of the genre.
This double-disc set opens with a father talking to his son about staying "true to the game." The gangsta game, that is, and the Game of Life, lived by the Code of the Streets. What follows is track after track of extreme gangsta rap, replete with continual obscenities, references to drugs, violence, and everything else that stays "true" to that well-know formula (In other words, Tru is not for the kiddies).
All that predictability is offset, thankfully, by some original rap stylings. Tru's core members are C-Murder "Da Killa," Master P "Ice Cream Man," and The Shocker. All favor the "rapid-attack" style so popular with southern rappers, and all can pop off syllables like gang bangers "popping off caps." "I Always Feel Like" is about the sneaky power of paranoia, while "I Got Candy" is about--you guessed it--slinging dope. Filling out the sound are guest artists aplenty, ...
