After the crossover effort of 2004's SPEND MY TIME, first-wave new traditionalist Clint Black returns to his roots on 2005's DRINKIN' SONGS & OTHER LOGIC. As the title suggests, this is a barroom-themed album, with a heavy dose of honky tonk that will undoubtedly make purists happy, and will make everyone else want to pop open a cold one. From the barroom boogie of the opening title track to the steel guitar-sweetened "Heartaches" to cry-in-your-beer ballads like "Go It Alone," DRINKIN' SONGS is Black's most solid effort in a long while.
At times Black missteps both musically and thematically. "Too Much Rock," for example, with its plodding tempo and its unnecessary and somewhat silly protest message against rock music, feels out of keeping with the album's feel. But those moments are the exception here, and when Black sticks to classic pick-and-twang, as he does admirably on songs like the album's closer, "Longnecks and Rednecks," DRINKIN' SONGS & OTHER LOGIC is well-made and convincing enough to satisfy the country purist in all of us.

Drinkin' Songs & Other Logic album
$14.45 Clint Black burst on the country scene in 1989 as a young buck with his own slant on country, but the rock and pop influence on country music throughout the '90s sees Black looking more than ever like a traditionalist with SPEND MY TIME. Black has never really ...

Drinkin' Songs & Other Logic CD music
$15.05 What has always set Doyle Lawson's groups apart from other progressive bluegrass outfits is their equal focus on both vocal and instrumental virtuosity. | | Giancarlo Nicolai Trio & John Tchicai CD (1987)
Drinkin' Songs & Other Logic songs
$15.05 This truly strange phenomenon of a band was put together after legendary saxophonist John Tchicai made a phone call to guitarist Giancarlo Nicholai before a gig and asked him to sit in because his own band couldn't make it through the snow. The set worked out so well that the two other members of Nicholai's regular trio, drummer Uelli Müller and bassist Thomas Durst, were added for a live recording date. The result is a session ripe with free-flowing enthusiasm and energy. Given its informality, it's amazing how well-rehearsed the band sounds, especially on the more structured tunes -- which happen to be Tchicai compositions -- "Mushi Miyake" and "Nu Skal du Komme." Alto and guitar trade lines and alternate fragments of the melodic themes. Nicholai sculpts rich chord progressions that eke out the harmonic shadow from which Tchicai begins his polytonal ascent. Either ballad or bombast, it makes no difference, there is a sensibility and multi-layered ...
| | Billy Joe Shaver I'm Just An Old Chunk Of Coal CD (1981) But I'm Gonna Be A
Drinkin' Songs & Other Logic album
$10.19 On his Columbia debut, Billy Joe Shaver took some insurance along to his first recording date. Along with being able to have Eddie Kilroy produce him, Shaver asked the producer to include a burgeoning young guitarist on the album who had never recorded before, Shaver's young son, Eddy. When he heard him playing his slash-and-burn style of country and blues, Kilroy agreed and a musical partnership was forged that would last 20 years, until Shaver the younger died of a drug overdose. Also in the guitar fold were stalwarts Dale Sellers and Bobby Thompson. Dave Kirby played bass, Marshall Chapman sang backup on the set, and a host of others filled in the country, gospel, and rock mix that Shaver had been cooking up in his songs. The material ranged from the wild and wooly outlaw country rock of "Fit to Kill and Going out in Style," to the downtrodden "Mexico," to the delightfully rollicking "Ragged Old Truck." There is also a re-recording of "When the Word Was Thunderbird" ...
