The second installment in the Six Degrees label's Latin Travels series continues the tradition established by the first: cull ten or so dance tracks in a variety of hot Latin rhythmic styles, muscle them up a bit with some modern electronic beats and a dash of turntablism here and there, and then get out of the way while everyone rushes the dancefloor. It worked well the first time and does so again here. What sets this album apart from the raft of similarly configured electro-worldbeat compilations currently on the market is the taste and restraint evidenced in the work of both the compilers and the remixers. A few tracks, such as DJ Tripp's remix of Bobi Céspedes' "California" and the nicely dubbed-up "What's Up Samba" by Flora y Fauna, are aggressive fusions of Latin tradition and dancehall modernity, but many of these selections wear their electronic fripperies very lightly. The Mark Pistel remix of Latin Soul Syndicate's "Mia Dia Bonita," for example, keeps the focus squarely where it belongs -- on the horns -- while subtly mixing in tasteful turntablism, and DIG's "Post Modern Cumbia" is exactly what its title implies: a gracefully rendered stutter-step cumbia groove spiced with turntables and a mysterioso keyboard part. Add in a brilliant reggaeton mix of los Mococos' "Bandolera Era" and Tim "Love" Lee's dub-funk take on Banda Uniao Black's "Faz Tanto Tempo," and you've got a recipe for the perfect beach party. Highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson
Personnel: Michael Spiro (percussion).

Latin Travels 2 songs
$8.95 An intricate, deliberately idiosyncratic record, assembled piece by piece, Boulders perfectly captures Roy Wood's peculiar genius, more so than anything else he recorded. All of his obsessions are here -- classical music, psychedelia, pre-Beatles pop, pastoral folk ballads, absurdist humor, studio trickery, and good old-fashioned rock & roll -- assembled in a gracefully eccentric fashion. Some listeners may find that eccentricity a little alienating, but it's the core of Wood's music. He wrote tuneful, accessible songs, ...

Latin Travels 2 album
$17.09 Thirty-six years of music, spanning four decades, and the sound is as fresh now as when they began. Mountain Smoke is original, unpredictable, and their audiences are as varied as the music they will encounter. Built with elements of country and folk, the power of newgrass, and the sweet flow of mountain ballads, the music is timeless. As songwriters and musicians, they remain on the leading edge of acoustic music. The band features Jimmy Gyles, a National Mandolin Champion, a two time National Flat-Picking Champion, and Fiddle Champion; and Banjo Champion, Billy Perry. Their musicianship is simply amazing!Twice selected as "Oklahoma's Favorite Band" by the reader's poll in the 'Daily Oklahoman', and "Oklahoma's Best Country Band" by the 'Oklahoma Gazette' Music Awards, Mountain Smoke continues to write songs and perform today. Playing a mixture of their original compositions, and music they have adapted to their ...
