| | Music Is My Art CD
Compiled by the art installation group HVW8 and released by Ubiquity, Music Is My Art brings together breakbeats, underground hip-hop, left-field neo-soul, and other experimental forms of electronic-based music onto one album. Many will already be familiar with British producer and remixer Seiji, or DJ and Yoruba labelhead Osunlade (though the tracks included here are fairly hard to find), but rappers Black Spade and J-Boogie or Danish soul duo Owusu & Hannibal offer just as exciting a possibility. Music Is My Art provides a soundtrack for those wishing to move away some from the mainstream, for those who embrace technology but aren't dependent on it, and proves an interesting and diverse set of songs that work to stimulate this kind of creativity. ~ Marisa Brown

$21.00 Comprised of 18 tracks culled from the singer/composer's first three decades, The Very Best of Enya was pieced together by the artist herself, along with longtime collaborators Nicky and Roma Ryan. Music Is My Art CD music
$12.99 Bassist Jay Anderson's release contains quite a bit of intriguing music. The title cut almost sounds like it is portraying a meeting between Weather Report and Aaron Copeland, "Downtime" has two horns soloing together; there is a somber piece for bass, Toots Thieleman's harmonica, and background keyboards ("On This Day"), and "At Sundown" has parade rhythms inspiring some fiery solos. Of the nine selections, Anderson contributed six, and he deserves full credit for the success of this fairly adventurous and highly enjoyable release which also features altoist Billy Drewes, trumpeter Tim Hagans, and keyboardist Dave Witham. ~ Scott Yanow
Bassist/composer Jay Anderson is among the most versatile and respected jazz artists performing today. Born in 1955 in Southern California, Anderson began playing acoustic bass at the age of 12. Since moving East, he has continued to perform and record with some of the most important names in jazz. $17.95 Even as the new romantics were coalescing into a fighting force and readied their assault on American shores and TV screens, members of a hairy horde were preparing their own rear-guard action against punk's progeny, once again hoisting rock's banner back into the charts. This counter-reformation, quickly dubbed the New Wave of Heavy Metal, provided a powerful counterweight to the frippery of the romantics, giving headbangers something to holler about during the '80s. Guitarist Graham Oliver and bassist Steve Dawson surfed that wave to glory with leading NWOHM group Saxon. Dawson departed in 1986, and thus was spared the indignities of the band's later years, Oliver held on until they'd burnished their reputation anew in the early '90s. Oliver and Dawson then promptly linked back up ...
