John Mayer appears on Otis Redding's "I've Got Dreams to Remember," which fits nicely alongside an even-handed treatment of "Ain't No Sunshine" with Tracy Chapman. Keith Richards and Carlos Santana show up to chop heads with Guy on Keb Mo's "The Price You Gotta Pay" and Screamin' Jay Hawkins's "I Put A Spell on You," respectively. The overall feel of the album is exceedingly comfortable and safe, yet Guy still plays and sings with a great deal of vitality, proving that his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame was no accident.
Buddy Guy's 2005 release, BRING 'EM IN, has--for better and worse--all the trappings of a "music's elder statesman" album. In the tradition of seasoned professionals entering the glorious autumn of their careers, Buddy Guy has invited lots of guests to play on a record filled with well-worn chestnuts. With the exception of one tune by Guy ("What Kind of Woman is This"), the majority of the set comprises R&B classics by Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield, Bill Withers, Wilson Pickett, and Eddie Floyd.
Personnel: Buddy Guy (vocals, guitar); John Mayer (vocals, guitar); Anthony Hamilton, Tracy Chapman, Bernie Worrell (vocals); Keb' Mo', Keith Richards, Danny Kootch, Carlos Santana (guitar); Robert Randolph (pedal steel guitar); Jim Horn (flute, baritone saxophone); Andrew Love (tenor saxophone); Ben Cauley (trumpet); Jack Hale (trombone); Willie Weeks (bass guitar); Steve Jordan (drums, background vocals).
Uncut (p.104) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Buddy Guy's unmistakable tone is as rich and fiery as ever..." Living Blues (p.38) - "[A] cover of Bill Withers' 'Ain't No Sunshine' plays well with breathy folkie Tracy Chapman serving as the perfect conduit for Guy's restrained fretwork." Bring 'Em In CD music
$14.15 The Duke Meets the Earl seems like an obvious album, pairing two of New England's finest contemporary blues guitarists, Duke Robillard and Ronnie Earl, who both share the same sort of hard, clear tone in their playing (Earl actually replaced Robillard in Roomful of Blues when the latter left the group for a solo career). For Earl, who has been working in a kind of jazz blues hybrid style in recent years, it marks a return ...

| | Derek Trucks Songlines CD (2006)
Bring 'Em In songs
$12.09 This is, perhaps, the one. Derek Trucks has been on an aesthetic quest for something since he began his own recording career in 1997 -- apart from his membership in the Allman Brothers Band. Each record has gone further into establishing Trucks not only as a slide guitar wizard (that happened when he was still in his teens), but also as a serious songwriter, fine arranger, and bandleader. The Derek Trucks Band, as evidenced by ...

| | Maher Shalal Hash Baz L'Autre Cap CD (2007)
Bring 'Em In CD music
$13.85 Maher Shalal Hash Baz is the artistic vision of Japanese visionary Tori Kudo. From record to record he assembles a sympathetic cast of musicians to play his fragile and beautiful compositions. Perhaps best described as Pet Sounds as played by the pets themselves, the sound of the group is perfect for K Records, since the label's leader, Calvin Johnson, knows a thing or two about innocent sophistication. For L'Autre Cap, Kudo decamped for two days in Olympia, WA, to record under the guidance of Arrington de Dionyso of Old Time Relijun with a band made up of a mix of Japanese and American musicians playing ...
