Initial pressings of this release include a bonus Victory Records sampler CD.
Though usually labeled as "hardcore," Between The Buried And Me has little to do with that music's original simplistic loud-fast-rules ethos. With a compositional complexity and rhythmic inventiveness that recall the work of Frank Zappa and the Mars Volta, ALASKA is not only unflinchingly heavy but dizzyingly varied. Though the album's death metal-esque grunts and 1980's shredder-style lead guitar will be familiar to metalcore fans, the frequent time changes, tempo shifts, jaw-dropping chops, and King Crimson references may find favor among fans of left-of-center metalheads System of a Down or followers of the NYC Downtown avant-garde scene.
Between the Buried and Me: Tommy Rogers (vocals); Paul Andrew Waggoner (guitar); Dan Briggs, Blake Richardson , Dustie Waring.
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Enhancements include a live video footage. Between The Buried And Me Alaska Songs Alaska Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Brutalmente increible ! Submitted by marcelom (Stgo. Chile) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Best Death Metal Album of 2005... ...was curiously NOT put out by a straight-up death metal band...but by BTBAM...
I'm a fan of killer technical death metal like Cynic, Athiest, Capharnaum, and the like...this album is the most maniacal, brutal, shredding, epic slab of motherf*cking insanity to come out in a decade...if listened to first to last, it is the 'Pink Floyd "The Wall"' of extreme music.
With surprising moments of clarity and deep, dark moods, and a cascade of brilliantly produced effects and environments added to supplement the raw vibe and glissando of BTBAM's non-traditional modes and scales, this record has been a constant must-play for me every week since I was first fortunate enough to discover it...when I first got the record, it was literally the only CD I listened to NON-STOP for four months straight...that's right, FOUR MONTHS, I listened to this on repeat...in my car, at my computer, at work, even on my phone...
And no, I don't work for BTBAM...but a life-changing and genre defining record comes along so infrequently - I believe this record to be of that type: eponymous, immediately classic, ground-breaking, and simply superbly satisfying from all angles. Even my friends that don't like extreme music like the sh*t outta this record. That says alot in and of itself.
Check it out yourself, make your own opinion. You will NOT be disappointed. Submitted by KevinADRIFT (Tampa, Florida) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

BTBAM continues its evolution. Its different, but its definitely BTBAM. Every album has a different but similar feel to it, and this album is no exception. Amazing tech work, amazing sound, and amazing album over all. I was a huge fan of Silent Circus, and when alaska came out, I was a little hesitant about it. But, now that I've listened to it a couple more times, it's jumped to my favorite cd as of right now.
Oh, and they're amazing live. If you have the chance, I highly suggest you check them out. Submitted by professionalfailure (va Beach, VA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Alaska album
$8.59 There's a breed of (post-1980s) bands with the same degree of grand rock experimentalism as Pink Floyd and Yes, who simultaneously adhere to the concept of concise songwriting. Porcupine Tree is one such band--their sound is a balance of lush ambient textures, charming vocal harmonies, rock & roll directness, and acoustically- and electronically-generated sounds. Their debut IN ABSENTIA shows all these elements in place, rich with the likely possibility of them becoming a contemporary counterpart to Pink Floyd.
Hailed by Billboard as 'cinematic...simple gorgeous', Porcupine Tree are unquestionably one of the UK's most inspired and inventive rock groups. In Absentia is their eagerly anticipated Lava Records debut. Digipak. 2002.

| | All That Remains This Darkened Heart CD (2004)
Alaska CD music
$9.85 Judging from just the first song on This Darkened Heart, one is tempted to immediately rank All That Remains among the top tier of current Swedish-influenced American hardcore-metal bands (and there are a lot of them). The dual-guitar interplay of Oli Herbert and Mike Martin is intricate and impressive, and their classically tinged riff-writing yields at least a slight distinction from their many At the Gates-influenced contemporaries. However, as early as the second track -- and again on several of the others -- they reveal their downfall in attempting to incorporate passages of melodic singing. It's a downfall they share with plenty of other bands in this genre. It would be a great idea to try this technique if these bands could pull it off tastefully, but All That Remains, like many of their counterparts, do not do so. The cleanly sung breakdowns on "Focus Shall Not Fail," "Tattered on My Sleeve," and the title track feel forced and are at times cringe inducing, sounding vaguely like bad-'80s radio rock (think late Journey). The other problem is that, as the album wears on, the experienced listener ...
| | Dark Tranquillity Character CD (2005)
Alaska music CDs
$12.29 Having taken longer than most of Gothenburg, Sweden's death metal giants to reveal their greatness, Dark Tranquility have now arguably become that ever-popular subgenre's most enduring torch-bearers -- the living embodiment of melodic death metal midway through the '00s. And, in keeping with that station, 2005's Character marks the third installment of what most agree has been the band's most consistent career-phase; one which finds them, like other genre standard-bearers before them (Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, anyone?), reveling in their mastery of a formula they know so well it inevitably begs the question: have they become too comfortable in their niche? Are they stagnating? Well, there's a distinct difference between beating a dead horse and riding it to victory every time, and Character sure feels like the latter, as song after memorable song storms by all limbs a-flailing and death-shrieks a-shrieking, their riffs and harmonies stacked as densely as only Dark Tranquility can ...
