When an established rocker launches a side band, sometimes the results can be head-scratchingly similar to their main group, or a complete different sound/approach all together. Founding Testament guitarist Eric Peterson's side band, Dragonlord, is indeed metal-based (as most would expect), but instead of continuing on the thrash metal path of Testament, Dragonlord specializes in black metal -- case in point, their 2005 sophomore effort, Black Wings of Destiny. While metal fans have known for quite some time that Peterson is one of thrash metal's better rhythm guitarists, few knew that he is in fact a singer to boot, as he also handles vocal chores for Dragonlord. And as evidenced by photos of the band, it would quite hard to even recognize Peterson (as the group favors the black metal "uniform" -- ghoulish makeup, black outfits that are heavy on the studs, pointy guitars, etc.). Despite the "disguise," there's no hiding that Peterson easily adapts to his new surroundings, as he sounds as if he's been a black metallist for life throughout Black Wings of Destiny. Goth keyboards/guitar riffs and rapid-fire drumming are offered by the truckload, especially on such tracks as the album-opening one-two punch of "The Becoming Of"/"The Curse of Woe," and "Until the End." And the band wraps things up with a surprisingly strong cover of the Thin Lizzy classic "Emerald" as Peterson momentarily abandons his growl for more melodic vocalizing. ~ Greg Prato

| Black Wings Of Destiny Music Black Wings Of Destiny Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Quality US Black Metal!!! Eric Peterson (Testament) shocked the music world with the formation of his black metal project Dragonlord. Many thought that Peterson was just jumping on the Black Metal bandwagon, and that anything that would be put out by said band, would be 2nd or 3rd rate hero worship. After the release of 'Rapture,' I couldn't do anything but disagree with the critics. Peterson was able to put together a fine line-up and release one of the best US Black Metal releases ever. Peterson's trade mark "Testament" riffing was present along with hints of the great Dimmu Borgir. Now Peterson returns with Dragonlords highly anticipated second album 'Black Wings Of Destiny.' Though not as immediate as 'Rapture,' this albums needs to be taken in slowly and requires a bit a patience. Once you begin to peel away the layers, what you find is very sophisticated Black Metal. Not only will 'Black Wings Of Destiny' crush any US Black Metal release this year, it is now set to rival the greats of the genre. Peterson's clean vocals (which sound a bit like Chuck Billy), are what sets this band apart. Peterson uses his clean vocals to bring a special element and atmosphere to the song. Unlike many bands who use clean vocals for melody when its time for the chorus, Peterson uses his (clean vocals) to add to the aura of the song. The guitar work and drumming is amazing, and will rival that of any Black Metal Band. The production is crisp but still warm, and doesn't sound like another typical pro-tools album. Pick this album up, and you will be brought to icy plains that you havn't seen since the days of the mighty Immortal and Emperor. Submitted by chevdaddy1 (Gwinn, MI) Was This Review Helpful? Black Wings Of Destiny album
$12.95 Nevermore's sixth album arrives bearing few surprises -- which, for a band less accomplished or too comfortable in their niche, would generally be seen as a negative attribute. Not here, as Seattle's finest mid-'00s heavy metal outfit (sorry Queensrÿche!) continue to set the bar for purist-leaning metal-heads on this side of the pond. As always, and not to take anything away from their cohorts (particularly drummer extraordinaire Van Williams), the soaring vocals of Warrel Dane and lead guitar heroics of Jeff Loomis ...

Black Wings Of Destiny CD music
$14.25 In the early '80s, a style of heavy metal was fast rising, in which groups sang about (and even to a point, dressed like) characters from an era long ago, in which gentlemen dressed in armor, and saved damsels in distress in tall castles. While some of these groups built a long-term career (Dio, Iron Maiden, etc.), many fell by the wayside as the style faded away, and was replaced by thrash and glam metal acts. By the early '90s, some of the music from these earlier bands could be detected in such new acts as Dream Theater and Iced Earth, who also pushed the 'technicality' of their music up a notch. Fast-forward another ten years to the early 2000s, and there is a new crop of bands that combine both of these metal eras together, especially by the prog metal "supergroup" Demons & Wizards. Comprised of Iced Earth's Jon Schaffer and Blind Guardian's Hansi Kürsch, the duo issued their second album in 2005, Touched by the Crimson King. Picture a modern metal soundtrack accompanying a triumphant ride through a forest on horseback, and you have an idea of what such songs as "Crimson King" ...

Black Wings Of Destiny CD music
$9.39 LIVE BITES features concert recordings from hair metal band the Scorpions, including two bonus tracks.
As the title suggests, Live Bites is a collection of live tracks from the Scorpions, recorded at a time (between 1988 and 1995) when they weren't at the top of their form, despite the hit single "Winds of Change." There are occasional highlights that might make the CD worthwhile for the band's most dedicated fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
As the title suggests, Live Bites is a collection of live tracks from the Scorpions, recorded at a time (between 1988 and 1995) when they weren't at the top of their form, despite the hit single "Winds of Change." During this time, their audience was beginning to evaporate, partially because of changing tastes and partially because the band was losing its ability to rock out consistently. Live Bites documents this decay too effectively. There are occasional highlights, but too much of the disc contains half-hearted, tired performances to make it worthwhile for anyone but the most dedicated fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Includes 2 tracks not on the US version: 'Ave Maria No Morrow' and 'Hit Between The Eyes.'
Recorded at various shows between 1988 and 1995, Live Bites shows the Scorpions past their prime. This, the U.K. version of the collection, contains the bonus tracks "Hit Between the Eyes" and "Ave Maria No Morro" in lieu of "Edge of Time," the latter of which can be found on the U.S. release. "Ave Maria No Morro" could be of interest to Scorpions fans seeking out more of the mellow, acoustic side of the band, while some other moments ...
