| | Nada Surf Weight Is A Gift CD Nada Surf Discography of CDs
Though it was poised for major-label alt-rock greatness in the late 1990s before being derailed by a novelty hit, Nada Surf truly hit a creative stride after signing to Barsuk Records in the early 2000s. Co-produced by Death Cab for Cutie's Chris Walla, THE WEIGHT IS A GIFT (2005) shows that indie status suits this Brooklyn trio just fine, as the band runs through an impressive set of highly melodic guitar-driven songs.
Nada Surf have always had a knack for mixing up speeds within the construct of basic indie rock, and its fourth record is no exception. The trio opens with the breezy power pop of "Concrete Bed," creates one of the more sincere and sweet power ballads with "Always Love," and ends on the Guided By Voices-conjuring "Imaginary Friends." As usual, Caws's earnest vocals have just the slightest element of the off-kilter, lending a keenly personal aura that hangs gently over this appealing record.

Entertainment Weekly (No. 841, p.90) - "...Their fourth CD boasts the same lo-fi jangle and lush fuzz as 2003's LET GO..." - Grade: B Uncut (p.112) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[R]ammed with stinging hooks and ringing harmonies....[A] sweet mixture of the cynical and lovelorn..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.63) - Ranked #38 in Mojo's "The 50 Best Albums Of 2005" - "[A]nother volume of self-lacerating, bi-polar power-pop." Mojo (Publisher) (p.110) - 4 stars out of 5 - "THE WEIGHT IS A GIFT is a triumph of majestic American pop uplift over bleak real-life adversity." Weight Is A Gift music CDs
$12.79 Building on the momentum of 2001's critically acclaimed GIRLS CAN TELL, Spoon unveiled KILL THE MOONLIGHT the following year. The Austin, Texas-based band's second outing for Merge Records finds frontman Britt Daniel and company settling comfortably into a mutually advantageous relationship with the revered indie label, resulting in a confident and creative album. The group reins in its blatant Pavement-isms, opting for a more stripped-down approach that relies on straightforward beats, minimal keyboard lines and guitar riffs, and smart melodies. Daniel hits a detached falsetto on the heavily looped, Krautrock-like "Stay Don't Go" (foreshadowing GIMME FICTION's "I Turn My Camera ...
| | Nada Surf Let Go CD (2002)
Weight Is A Gift songs
$10.35 A funny thing happened to Nada Surf on the way to sure-fire late-'90s alt-rock stardom. Despite obtaining a decent amount of MTV exposure, their sardonic first single, "Popular," ultimately arrived just moments too late to capitalize on the era's short-lived mainstream fancy with geek rock. And with no quality second hit in sight, neither 1996's moderately successful High/Low nor its forgettable 1998 follow-up, The Proximity Effect, gained much traction outside the indie rock underground -- seemingly consigning the trio to the dreaded one-hit-wonder bin. Subsequently dropped by Elektra, Nada Surf settled into a prolonged state of hibernation (only drummer Ira Elliot was heard from, thanks to his regular session work), so that even committed fans would have to be forgiven for washing their hands of the group during this four-year silence. That is, until the belated and understated 2002 arrival of their revealing third opus, Let Go, on which Nada Surf showed that they refused to quietly fade away into gimmick-enforced exile by putting their faith into their own pop songwriting instincts. The resulting record takes its title ...

Death Cab for Cutie finally delivers on its promise with its fourth album, TRANSATLANTICISM. Although the band's earlier outings have excellent moments, this collection of indie power-pop plays to Death Cab's strengths, wrapping Ben Gibbard's plaintive vocals and emotive lyrics in consistently dynamic and engaging ...

Weight Is A Gift album
$20.99 Mikey General made a series of noteworthy singles for the British Fashion label in the 1980s, then moved to Philip "Fatis" Burrell's Xterminator label, where he hooked up with soon-to-be superstar Luciano. The two singers left Xterminator to form their own Qabalah First label, which brings us to Exalt Jah. On this album, Mikey General is joined by guests that include Luciano, Adigun Minkah and Turbulence for a modestly enjoyable but not really outstanding set of modern roots-and-culture songs. Accompanied mostly by a rhythm section centered around drummer George Miller and ...
