The title of Alison Moyet's 2004 release, VOICE, indicates to listeners where the focus of this set falls. On this dizzyingly eclectic collection of tunes, which flits from Gershwin ("The Man I Love") to Elvis Costello ("Almost Blue") to Henry Purcell ("Dido's Lament: When I Am Laid in Earth"), Moyet's textured singing and stirring delivery are front and center, making VOICE the definitive representation of her vocal gifts. Moyet and her accompanying orchestras are given an extra boost here by the tasteful, lush arrangements from producer and composer Anne Dudley.

JazzTimes (p.80) - "Moyet, with her uncompromising musicality and a diverse history that embraces punk, blues and hard-driving dance beats, is expertly versed in the art of enriching whatever environment she's placed in..." Lush, smoky, voluptuous... Beautiful "whiskey" voice, sublime orchestrations of
eclectic, moody songs. Submitted by Chopsie (Columbia, SC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Autumn Defense Circles CD (2003)
Voice songs
$10.95 The Autumn Defense let down their guard on Circles, their second album, to reveal the blue-green beauty trembling beneath. Less ambitious and far more intuitive, it's a mellow stretch of earthy folk-pop, where horns and strings are used because they sound nice, not out of a self-appointed duty to past musical idols. Between John Stirratt's busy touring schedule with Wilco and Pat Sansone's multitude of production engagements, Circles exudes the ameliorative qualities of an escape record that was made during downtime, for downtime -- while mentally liberated from the pressures of the daily world, where the two writers could reflect upon the geyser of circles that is life. Sunny acoustics and vintage keys over lazy brushes set the character throughout Circles. "The Answer" rolls out a strata of guitars that suddenly reminds the listener of an old Gordon Lightfoot album, only to have the notion reinforced by the wave of strings and gentle background shakers that follow. "Some Kind of Fool" steals into brief moments of Pet Sound drama, with its bass-and-percussion breaks, ...
| | Silkworm It'll Be Cool CD (2004)
Voice album
$13.89 A case could be made for It'll Be Cool as one of Silkworm's least consistent records. Depending on the song, it's the scuzziest, messiest, prettiest, oddest one they've made. But almost all of the songs are strong -- so, in that sense, it's one of the band's most consistent records. The bulk of the first 15 minutes of the record -- excepting the strange piercing/racing patterns in "Penalty Box," which must be one of the most musically a-musical sounds ever made (is it a malfunctioning toy keyboard gone berserk, playing itself?) -- begins innocently enough, in the band's tried and true snarling form. After that, things get weird. On "Something Hyper," an old-timey, drunken-backwoods lurch of a song, a comically grumbled background vocal track trails Tim Midgett's lead and Michael Dahlquist's splashing drums repeatedly ...
| | Skunk Anansie Stoosh CD (1996) (Import) Import
Voice CD music
$28.89 The second offering from aggro-political rockers Skunk Anansie finds producer Garth Richardson (L7, Rage Against the Machine) at the helm. Frontwoman Skin's vocals grab the listener by the scruff of the neck and demand attention. The rest of the band backs her with a frenzied, yet focused, sonic attack, giving serious punch to tracks like the breakneck "Twisted (Everyday Hurts)" and the lumbering, scathing "We Love Your Apathy." Stoosh finds Skunk Anansie still raging for political activism (albeit sometimes through muddy lyrics), and the band makes no bones about that fact (addressed succinctly on "Yes It's F*****g Political." Skin proves herself capable of more personal ...
| | Ron Wise Rons Point Of View CD (2006)
Voice music CDs
$18.99 November 13, 2003To Whom It May Concern; The past seventeen years has granted me the pleasure of introducing the greatest fingerstyle guitarists in the world to vast audiences at The Chet Atkins Appreciation Society Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. Now in this, his first CD, it is my privilege to introduce you to one of the most unique of all these great players, not just for his playing, which is good enough on it's own, but how and where he is living out his dream.Ron Wise has written and performed some wonderful guitar selections along with Buster B. Jones and Les Sneed on his Point of View CD. When one listens to Rons Point of View, that term takes on a whole new meaning. It was my good fortune to visit Ron as he lives out his dream to live in Alaska, in a log cabin and play the guitar. The incredible view from his cabin home, as it overlooks a winding river several hundred feet below, Ron's Point of View is clearly understood in that majestic scene. So what does that have to do with this CD? Everything - because the inspiration received by him from that view has obviously been masterfully transferred to this collection of marvelous guitar compositions, clearly defining his guitar expertise, as well as Les and Buster's. Trust me, he is a great fingerpicker and you will love this first entry in the world of CDs, but hopefully not his last. Do yourself a favor and live out your dream as you listen to the Point of View guitar world of Ron Wise, Successful Dreamer, Log Cabin Dweller, Alaskan Mountain Man - Extraordinaire . JonesTo Ron WiseOn rare occasions, people mask or deny a God given talent for years, not sharing it with there friends or the public.. Such is the case with Ron Wise. Here is a true mountain man, that has hidden his talent for several decades, that is until now. With his first ever release entitled Ron's Point of View, Ron demonstrates not only his command over his guitar, but his truly wonderful gift of composition. This is a C.D., that will bring many hours of listening pleasure to one and all. I was honored, that my friend asked me to participate in the making of this C.D. Now his music is where it belongs, in the hands of music lovers. Enjoy, Buster B. Jones. busterbjones ...
