Recorded live at the Harlem Square Club, Miami, Florida on January 12, 1963. Includes liner notes by Peter Guralnick.
Sam Cooke's reputation as a brilliant singer is sometimes maintained in spite of some of his records, not because of them. Hugo and Luigi, his RCA producers, often drowned Cooke's stunning pipes in an ocean of inappropriate orchestras and choirs. But compare their single version of "Chain Gang" to the stripped-down, gently swaying, and considerably more heartfelt live version on LIVE AT THE HARLEM SQUARE CLUB; no doubt about it, Cooke was a master, and if his producers had been a bit more sympathetic, his stature would be even higher now than it is.
Recorded in Florida in 1963, just over a year before his murder, this 10-track set puts Cooke in front of a small combo and just lets the man go. Every track is a small masterpiece of soul phrasing, and the band is more than up to Cooke's vocal prowess. Listen and be amazed.

You've heard the rest now listen to the best! You will have heard the slick, smooth sound of the singles. This is stripped down and raw and shows a side of Sam Cooke that many didn't know existed until this album was first released 21 years after his death. This album was the first Sam Cooke album I bought. I've been hooked ever since. I feel sure you will be too!

It's just incredible that a man with an image of cute, cupid like songs makes this steaming, hot recording!
He challenges his audience, the band, the listener. "Bring It On Home To Me" never got any better. The Animals? Forget theirs, phoney imitators! Just listen to the intoduction, how he builds the spell and comes to an orgasm of love, rock, joy and passion. God, this is music as it should be!!

Listen as Sam's voices warms up throughout this set, into the most perfect blend of roughness and sweetness ever heard in a human voice. (I used to think that Rod Stewart added the rasp when he credited Sam as his main influence, but after hearing this, I realize that he added nothing.) The fact the Cooke could also sell to the mainstream market by smoothing out his sound only shows that he could sing anything.

Live At The Harlem Square Club, 1963 shows a side of Sam Cooke very different from his gospel and pop - more raw, sexy and compelling. This is one of my all-time favorite records, and the new version of the CD has extremely interesting background material about Cooke's musical evolution.
