This collection contains selections from WHO'S AFRAID OF THE ART OF NOISE, MOMENTS IN LOVE, and INTO BATTLE.
For three years Anne Dudley, J.J. Jeczalik, Gary Langan and Trevor Horn endlessly remixed a collection of found sounds, rhythms, melodies and thematic motifs into a number of releases for Horn's ZTT Records. After the other three split from Horn in 1985, themes from these recordings constantly reappeared in their work, but it was not until 1998 that these original recordings were reissued on CD.
The 16-song DAFT contains almost all of the groundbreaking 1983 EP INTO BATTLE, the wellspring for all future AoN projects, along with several stray singles and a good-sized chunk of 1984's WHO'S AFRAID OF THE ART OF NOISE. Among the brilliant tracks are the dreamily lush "Moments In Love," the bizarre vocal cut-ups of "The Army Now" and the influential hits "Beat Box" and "Close (To the Edit)." This CD, both avant-garde and accessible, is the purest example of montage in popular music.
Art Of Noise: Gary Langan, Anne Dudley, J.J. Jeczalik.Uncut (3/04, p.109) - 5 stars out of 5 - "[T]he ultimate anthology of wanton jazz and cut'n'pastiche pop..." CMJ (2/1/99, p.28) - "...a snapshot of the troupe at its zenith..." Daft Review

| | Squeeze Up The Junction: Essential Collection CD (2000) (Import) United Kingdom
Daft songs
$9.39 All of the many Squeeze compilations available are somehow deficient in one way or another; even the excellent Singles: 45s and Under gives a skewed perception of the band by focusing entirely on their singles instead of including some of their more wide-ranging album tracks. Up the Junction, however, is just weird, and its subtitle is oddly misleading. Focusing on Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook's darker material, like the near-suicidal character study "Vanity Fair," puts the lie to the group's image as jolly pub rockers, but this collection's monochromatic focus is just ...
| | Rippingtons Let It Ripp! CD (2003)
Daft album
$9.65 On Let It Ripp, the contemporary jazz masters known as the Rippingtons offer a mixed exhibition of musical paintings that freely roam their "live" aesthetic more than on any previous studio project. Recorded with no outside musicians except for the horns of Jerry Hey, Gary Grant, and Steven Hoffman, this excellent collection of 11 original songs written by Russ Freeman exemplifies the culmination of 17 years of being on the road. Special guest saxophonist Eric Marienthal (whose killer chops have been heard with the likes of Chick Corea's Elektric Band, among others) provides another level of energy to the already energetic sound of Freeman, who plays guitar, synths, and keyboards, Scott Breadman on percussion, Kim Stone on bass, Dave Karasony on drums, and Bill Heller, also on keyboards. Illustrious highlights of the program include "Let It Rip" (a dynamic mix of guitar and sax), "Mr. 3" (a tune dedicated to Freeman's love of golf), "Bella Luna," and "High Life" (a party tune that features a call and response between Freeman's guitar and the horn section). Overall, these fresh collaborations have the excitement of a new day, and by alternating currents of smooth jazz with an intoxicating mix of distinctive rhythmic influences, the top-level musicianship heard here is sure to receive the acclaim ...
| | Elton John Peachtree Road CD (2004)
Daft CD music
$12.65 In 2001, Elton John reconvened with longtime lyrical collaborator Bernie Taupin and recorded SONGS FROM THE WEST COAST, a collection that hearkened back to the duo's golden age in the 1970s and immediately drew comparisons to classic albums MADMAN ACROSS THE WATER and HONKY CHATEAU. Three years later, the duo went back into the studio and emerged with PEACHTREE ROAD, a record packed with the kind of rustic-sounding pop that brings to mind TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION (and whose title was inspired by John's adopted home in Georgia).
Keeping it in the musical family, longtime band members Davey Johnstone and Nigel Olsson are aboard, with the former adding musical-director duties to his usual guitar-playing responsibilities. Showcasing a voice that's gotten deeper and richer with age, John wisely sticks to a set that is predominantly made up of ballads, ranging from the lush, "countrypolitan" stylings of "Turn the Lights Out When You Leave" to the more gospel-flavored "Answer in the Sky." John also includes "My Elusive Drug," an uplifting homage to his companion David Furnish. He takes it up a notch with "They Call Her the Cat," a sassy horn-and-harmony-driven stylistic sequel to "Honky Cat."
Recording information: Silent Sound, Atlanta, GA; The Record Plant, Los Angeles, CA; Tree Studios, Atlanta, GA.
Photographer: Sam Taylor-Wood.
Personnel: Elton John (vocals, piano, Fender Rhodes piano, background vocals); Elton John; John Jorgenson (pedal steel guitar); Anatoly Rosinsky, Robin ...
| | Bishops Cross Cuts CD (1979) (Import) United Kingdom
Daft music CDs
$11.79 The Bishops' (the Count having been dropped...) second studio album fro Chiswick came out as CWK 3009 in 1979. Again features Jools Holland on piano and includes 'I Want Candy', as performed by the band on Top Of The Pops! 14 total tracks. Ace. 2005.
If you were a fan of the Count Bishops' brand of high-energy rock & roll, then 1979's Cross Cuts, while it wasn't their best work, was exactly what you wanted and expected from them. Driven by some ferocious guitar attack courtesy of Johnny Guitar along with Dave Tice's gruff-as-gravel vocals, the tunes ...
