Bettye Lavette's superlative a cappella rendition of Sinead O'Connor's "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" is a fitting opener to this raw collection of covers by women songwriters like Lucinda Williams, Joan Armatrading, and Dolly Parton. The job done by Lavette and her exemplary backing band on this superb deep soul set is so thoroughly transformational as to make these pop, rock, and country songs entirely their own. Her voice is rough and heartfelt, palpably carrying a weight of heartbreak, the musicians' performances are intimate and spontaneous, and the songs, from Parton's "Little Sparrow" to Bobbie Cryner's undiscovered masterpiece, "Just Say So," are impeccably well-chosen.

Bettye Lavette I've Got My Own Hell To Raise Songs I've Got My Own Hell To Raise Music Review Average Rating: (3.9 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Soul to die for!! From the first 4 bars, Bettye Lavette earned my longtern loyalty, and it just got better as the tracks unfolded. The album is essentially a covers album of tracks that were never written as soul tracks. Bettye has injected new life into each piece with emotion which is uniquely hers and nothing short of sublime. There is also great use of dynamics and interesting key changes in places that refreshingly take you away from what you'd normally be hearing on a "Soul" album. If you appreciate good music regarless of genre...you need this CD. Submitted by noah.terracall (Geelong, VIC, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
What A Voice This lady is awesome. She has style that reaches your soul and taps emotions that bring back memories of joy and pain. Submitted by yedwards3 (New Orleans, La, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
DOES NOT WORK Having done a superb job with Solomon Burke on Fat Possum, Joe Henry tries again with Betty Lavette. While Solomon's CD was warm, idosyncratic and his best effort in nearly 10 years, the present CD is rating. Whether it's the choice of songs (forgettable) or the stripped down, bass heavy production - this just does not work - one listen was more than enough to drive me back to Betty's excellent live album and her oldies courtesy of Kent Soul. she hit that spot in the heart She got me right at the first song "I do not want what I haven't got" and then came "Down to zero" and I was forever hooked. Her voice hit that spot in the heart that hurts, but it feels oh so good. Brilhant. Submitted by Gus Motta (Hoboken, NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
