Canadian power quintet Harem Scarem's best are packaged in this nifty import, including: "Blue," "Jealousy," and "Voice of Reason."

Unlike many of their American counterparts, Canadian quartet Harem Scarem made the transition from hair metal of the '90s to hard rock of the new decade in a relatively smooth fashion. This Essentials compilation only spans the early portion of their career; from their eponymous 1991 debut album to 1996's Mood Swings. During this time, the group shorn its locks and abandoned the overly produced, AOR-friendly sound with something a bit edgier (but still slightly polished -- they want to sound dirty, but look good doing it). Die-hard fans of the group will already own most if not all of this material, but fans wanting a comprehensive primer on the band's early years will find Essentials to serve them very well. ~ Rob Theakston

Digitally remastered budget priced collection from the veteran Canadian rockers including "Slowly Slipping Away", "Blue", "Something To Say", "Jealousy", "Love Reaction", "Voice Of Reason", "If There Was Time" and many more.

Mother Love Bone Stardog Champion CD  (1992)

CD $12.35  5 stars Audio Samples
It wasn't death but life that brought Mother Love Bone to the attention of the world in the end. Andrew Wood's premature passing was a personal tragedy to all who knew him and to the band's hometown fanbase, but the group had barely made a mark beyond the Shine EP, and Apple was less a debut album than a memorial. But when Seattle's music took over the commercial stratosphere, with Gossard and Ament steering Pearl Jam to undreamed-of heights, it was inevitable that a re-release would occur -- something further confirmed when "Crown of Thorns" became one of the many radio hits from the soundtrack to Singles. For all the after-the-fact money-making thanks to Polygram, about the only thing that makes it a rip-off to the earlier fans is the inclusion of one unreleased track -- "Lady Godiva Blues," which sounds more than a little like one of the Cult's neo-boogie efforts circa Electric. Wood certainly has Ian Astbury's gift of gab and vocal projection, though it's likely Rick Rubin would have recorded the guitars a lot more forcefully; either way, it's not essential for those who have everything else already. For newcomers, though, this collection ...

Survival sans Michael Schenker will forever be the plight of English hard rock heavyweights UFO. Indeed, for many ardent fans, the validity of the group's existence appears to hinge on the presence of the irascible German within its ranks. But with all due respect to the incomparable mad axeman, even his formidable talents have done little to elevate UFO's performance during its reunions of the '90s and 2000s, so it's only fair that the enduring "classic" trio of vocalist Phil Mogg, bassist Pete Way, and rhythm guitarist/keyboardist Paul Raymond should be free to carry on with or without him. They do the latter on 2004's You Are Here, a steady but very workmanlike album (recorded, ironically enough, in Germany) on which the lineup is rounded out by drummer Jason Bonham and American guitarist Vinnie Moore. Opening numbers like the AC/DC-riffed "When Daylight Goes to Town," the rhythmically jumpy "Black Cold Coffee," and the cool grooving "The Wild One" all throw off intermittent sparks, but leave no real lasting thunder in their wake. In a way, they are thus true to UFO tradition by prioritizing ...

Live Songs From Black Mountain CD  (2006)

CD $11.05  4.1 stars Audio Samples
Released three years after BIRDS OF PRAY, Live's 2006 album, SONGS FROM BLACK MOUNTAIN, finds the alternative-rock group staying in the vein of the former record's highly melodic sound, while revisiting its early-1990s roots. Often recalling the band's debut, MENTAL JEWELRY, this 12-track outing largely tones down heavy guitar riffs in favor of an acoustic-leaning vibe that allows frontman Ed Kowalcyzk's ever-emotive voice an even stronger presence, as on "The River," a soaring and catchy anthem. As always, themes of spirituality factor ...

Neither time, nor the deaths of founding members, nor claims that they'll never play together again seem to stop the legendary Who. On 2006's ENDLESS WIRE, the band's first official studio full-length since 1982's IT'S HARD, Pete Townshend is still folding progressive structures and lofty themes into bombastic, arena-ready rock, while Roger ...

Celtic Frost Vanity/Nemesis CD  (1989) Reissue

CD $10.59  4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Few bands in the metal world get a second chance after a major career misstep, and no band exemplifies this problem more than Celtic Frost. Two albums ago (Into the Pandemonium), they were pioneering avant-garde sensibilities in the thrash genre and wooing audiences and critics with their vast abilities. Then everyone but leader Tom Warrior quit the band, and the next album (Cold Lake) ushered in a new sound and a glam image that turned fans and critics away in droves. So after getting back original bassist Martin Ain, Warrior blended the two lineups and decided to get back to his roots on Vanity/Nemesis. Crafting a grinding chug that emphasized their mastery of thrash metal, the album was an ugly beast that offered a unique sound that no bands have really tried to adopt since. Whispered passages and wildly experimental guitar solos are two of the elements that carry from song to song, while the thick riffs of their pre-Cold Lake sound manage to survive the transition quite easily. This all adds up to a mean little album that spits out vicious songs that have such a strange and arty bent to them that it borders on parody at times. That isn't to say that the songs aren't still juggernauts, but the lyrics to tracks like "Phallic Tantrum" are so vague and heady that they don't even achieve the goal of making the listener think. One track in particular stands out for being a major artistic success here: "Wings of Solitude." Assisted by the delicate wail of Michele Amar on the ...
