| Complete Studio Recordings Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Not Quite "Complete" But Great This Lone Hill Jazz reissue reprises only three sessions -- there were at least two more. What is surprising is that this excellent music should have languished so long in total obscurity. The two players, so similar in their taste and their sound, their consummate artistry, produced some excellent music. What is not so agreeable is that Lone Hill seems to have neglected the actual delineation of who the musicians were, other than the leaders. It's known that on at least one of the albums, "Gingerbread Men," the pianist was Hank Jones, rather than Roger Kellaway. That aside, the players swing mightily on relatively short numbers and the tunes are largely unfamiliar but sprightly and well-crafted, melodic and with some fine , entertaining improvisations. An attractive package, all around and a blessed relief to more pretentious and sometimes trying similar outings by lesser artists. Terry and Brookmeyer clearly have a fine rapprochement and the rest of the group(s) contribute accordingly. A dandy bit of mid-`60s lively jazz. Finally: Complete Terry/Brookmeyer on CD! What a delight to discover this wonderful group now available on CD! The Terry/Brookmeyer quintet's complete studio recordings in one convenient 2 CD set. The playing is top notch by this unique, never equalled combo, I highly recommend it to jazz lovers of all ages. I hope Lonehill keeps re-issuing great recordings that have been out of print for many years. Submitted by Drjazz44 (Livermore, CO, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Complete STUDIO, but doesn't include live recordings While it is nice to have the three studio albums (without any alternate or bonus takes) that this great team made for Mainstream in the mid-60s, two fine live albums remain unreleased--"Clark Terry/Bob Brookmeyer" recorded live at the Half Note in New York in 1962 and issued later by Verve, and another live set issued by Mainstream titled "Tonight" issued in 1964. Perhaps Lonehill will see its way clear to reissuing these wonderful live sets as a follow-up? Submitted by Greg M. (La Grande, OR, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

There's much good jazz guitar on this compilation, but there's no thematic coherency to this collection of pieces by Larry Coryell, Charlie Byrd, and Kenny Burrell. Is it for art lovers? Maybe -- it would be suitable as laid-back background music for gallery ...

Complete Studio Recordings
$11.09 At age eighty, tenor saxophonist, composer and band leader Benny Golson is still going strong, and although he experienced a few lean years, is very much a force on the modern mainstream jazz scene in the years of the 2000s. He has revived the spirit of his original Jazztet, co-founded with the late trumpeter Art Farmer, on several occasions since the ensemble was originally founded in 1959. This edition features a strong front line of Golson, trumpeter Eddie Henderson, and trombonist Steve Davis, players from different generations who completely understand the hard and post-bop language. The rhythm section is even more delicious, with pianist Mike LeDonne, peerless bassist Buster Williams, and younger drummer Carl Allen working together in the best sense of that ideal. As one of the more literate, articulate, and outspoken representatives of the jazz world, Golson continues to translate it into a broader base of influences. "Verdi's Voice" is a Baroque type waltz with harder edges from LeDonne and Williams, while the layered horn sections are at once kinetic and static. The rustic ballad "L'Adieu" with Henderson's muted trumpet echoes Chopin. In an uncomplicated romp that sounds Russian, "Gypsy Jingle-Jangle" bumps up to a fast hard bop like the original Jazztet, with Golson unshackled and flying. As a democratic leader focused on balance, Golson is happy to give the other bandmates their space, ...
