John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara star. A cattle baron fights to tame his wife, daughter, and political land-grabbers, with humorous results. The battle of the sexes goes into full throttle in this madcap Western.
McLintock is a successful, hard-drinking, rabble-rousing cattle baron whose town is named in his honor. When Katherine, his estranged wife, arrives back in town to seek a divorce, they immediately lock horns and brawl like two alley cats -- often in public. Besides his hot-tempered wife, McLintock also has to contend with his daughter and her suitors, a confrontation between homesteaders and cattlemen, and the government's problems with the local Comanche. John Wayne shows off his funny side in this 1963 western, a comedy inspired by THE TAMING OF THE SHREW. Starring as wealthy cattle baron G.W. McLintock, Wayne shows a real sense of comic timing in several scenes filled with slapstick humor. After his wife (Maureen O'Hara) and daughter leave him for the East, McLintock attempts to win them back. The dynamics between O'Hara and Wayne are the strong suit of this film, the actors having worked together previously on THE QUIET MAN.
As this is by no means a revisionist western, McLintock's chauvinistic attempts to "tame" his wife fit within the problematic ideology of the larger western genre. The ultimate example of this comes at the end of the film when McLintock settles his marital dispute by publicly "spanking" his wife in what is now a notorious cinematic moment. MPI Home Video's videocassette #6022 is the "full-length producer's cut" of the film and it is the only version "authorized by the estate of John Wayne." The print for the video was struck from the original negative which was restored under the supervision of Michael Wayne, the film's producer and John Wayne's son. The soundtrack was digitally remastered for stereo.
Color by Technicolor. Shot in Panavision. Mclintock! Reviews: "...This comic-Western variation on THE TAMING OF THE SHREW has a place in the hearts of John Wayne-Maureen O'Hara fans....The film's virtues include a gallery of beloved character actors..."

Better than the musical, "Oklahoma." Born and raised in Oklahoma, I would rather people size up my State with this movie than Rogers and Hammersteins stereo-type version. Yes, McClintock was real and the movie winks at a historical point of veiw. But entertainment is what carries this movie from start to finish. John Wayne still lives in this panoramic account of Oklahoma. Submitted by jerryleestone (Bethany, Oklahoma 73008) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
John wayne comedy western John Wayne is a wealthy rancher who helped settle the territory. His wife(Maureen O'Hara) wants a divorce and lives back east. The chemistry between the two is outstanding. The ways of the west clash with the prim and proper east makes it very funny. The usual cast that John Wayne has in the movie keep it consistant with his other westerns. Excellent family movie. Good entertainment on a lazy sunday afternoon. Submitted by doubledp (Phoenix, Arizona) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
Puree hair-pin delight! There's no point in repeating everything you've already read, because this rare film is bound to become one of your John Wayne favorites too.
Whatever you do, get the MPI Media print. It's the only one produced from a full-length master restored under the supervision of his son (and co-star) Michael, and authorized by the Wayne estate. Mclintock! film
$14.39 Based on the journals of Brother Gaspar de Carvajal, AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD is director Werner Herzog's hallucinatory tale of Spanish colonialists searching for El Dorado, the legendary city of gold, in 16th-century Peru. When the travellers reach an impasse, a scouting party is assembled to search for any traces of the mythical empire. As they attempt to forge their way through the dense jungle, more and more of the party falls ill while their ruthless leader, Don Lope de Aguirre (Klaus Kinski), grows increasingly insane.
Widely considered to be Herzog's finest film, AGUIRRE, which shares much in common with Francis Ford Coppola's APOCALYPSE NOW, highlights the director's visionary approach to filmmaking. Like Coppola's film, accounts of AGUIRRE's shooting are laced with legendary incidents, such as the time Herzog reportedly held a gun to Kinski's head to get him to finish a scene. Whatever transpired between Herzog and Kinski, it made for astonishing cinema, as evidenced by the actor's haunting performance and the entire film's powerfully hypnotic mood.

| | Rooster Cogburn (...And The Lady) DVD (1975) Keep Case; Widescreen
Mclintock! review
$10.25 John Wayne reprises his role as Rooster Cogburn, the eye-patched, whiskey-guzzling deputy marshall from TRUE GRIT. While on the trail of a gang of outlaws led by his old partner Hawk (a truly villainous Richard Jordan), Rooster teams up with bible-thumping missionary Eula Goodnight (Katherine Hepburn) to avenge the murder of her father by the gang. The chemistry between Wayne and Hepburn is palpable as barbs fly between the grumpy gunman and feisty missionary, and Strother Martin delivers a sparkling cameo.

| | Quiet Man DVD (1952) Collector's Edition
Mclintock! DVD
$10.29 One of John Ford's most cherished projects, THE QUIET MAN took years to finance but became one of his greatest box-office successes and an enduringly beloved classic. John Wayne stars as Sean Thornton, a retired American boxing champion trying to put tragedy behind him by returning to Innisfree, the bucolic Irish village of his birth. He purchases his birthplace from its current owner, enraging the wealthy and bellicose Red Will Danaher (Victor McLaglen), who had designs on the property. On arriving at his cottage, Thornton finds it being swept out by Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O'Hara), a redheaded vision from whom he steals a not completely unwelcome kiss. After engaging in a subterfuge involving a horse race, some of the locals manage to get the disgruntled Red Will to allow his sister to be courted by the American. But the courtship ritual of the village is only the first of many local practices that the bewildered Thornton must endure if he is to have Mary Kate. Wayne gives a surprisingly nuanced performance as the fish out of water, and he is perfectly matched with the radiantly rambunctious O'Hara. The rest of the cast is splendid as well, and the lush color photography garnered an Academy Award for Winston Hoch. John Ford also won an Oscar for his directing, and it's impossible not to be charmed by the artistry with which he weaves his rollicking, robust tale.

Jacob and his three sons (one of whom is portrayed by Wayne's real-life son Patrick) set out to bring the gang to justice. This late-period Wayne western is characterized by a gritty realism not present in most of his earlier works. The surprisingly graphic violence is also tempered with abundant humor.

$6.95 Jeff Burr, known for his slasher sequels (PUMPKINHEAD 2, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 3), ventures into new terrain with STRAIGHT INTO DARKNESS, a genre-bending and macabre tale set during WWII. Two Allied soldiers, the philosophical Losey (Ryan Francis) and psychotic Deming (Scott McDonald), are en route to a court marshal for a heinous war crime when an exploding mine allows them to escape into the desolate no-man's-land.
