Interestingly, because of a number of personnel changes, none of the members present for Merry Christmas! in 1963 remained with the group in 1966 when Christmas With the Christies was recorded. While the group has been eclipsed by Peter, Paul, and Mary over time, the New Christy Minstrels' star shone as bright as any folk group in the mid-'60s. This discount-priced two-fer combines two up-tempo Doris Day albums from the late '50s and early '60s. The discs were not released sequentially; 1959's Cuttin' Capers was followed by two 1960 releases, What Every Girl Should Know and Show Time, before Bright and Shiny appeared in 1961. But the two albums share a sprightly tone. The theme of Bright and Shiny is happy songs -- "I Want to Be Happy," "Happy Talk" -- while Cuttin' Capers is even more frolicsome. There are songs that were newly written at the time, such as the scene-setting "Cuttin' Capers," which leads things off, and "Twinkle and Shine," the title song from Day's reissued 1961 film (the first time around in 1959 it had been called It Happened to Jane), which closed the disc, but for the most part the songs are drawn from the Great American Songbook, dating back to the mid-'20s for tunes like "I'm Sitting on Top of the World" and "I Want to Be Happy" (both songs Day had sung in films in the '50s) and as recent as the late '40s for "Steppin' out With My Baby" from the 1948 film Easter Parade and "Happy Talk" from the 1949 musical South Pacific. The material and the arrangements are well chosen for a singer who was better at conveying contentment than turmoil. Jimson Weed is Nathan's second album, and their first for Nettwerk. The higher profile is deserved, as the Winnipeg combo has cut out a pretty, fun, and unique slice of the Americana (by way of Canada) pie. The music travels easily between country & western, hot jazz, and the back roads of rootsy pop; besides the spare combo of kick drum and snare running throughout, Nathan augments each track with flourishes of banjo, accordion, steel guitar, and what just might be the wispy willow of a musical saw in the romantic shadows of "Discarded Debris." As accomplished as Jimson Weed is instrumentally, it's the voices of Keri McTighe and Shelley Marshall that truly define Nathan's sound. Pitched high but capable of impressive dynamic and emotional range, their harmonies energize "Lock Your Devils Up"'s locomotive ramble, tart up the petticoats and skiffle of "Emilina," and prove easily adaptable to modern-style pop on "I Left My Station," a tune pitched somewhere between Shawn Colvin and Sarah McLachlan. Dustily muted trumpet and plucked banjo help give McTighe and Marshall's vocals a front-parlor feel on "One Spend," while touches of electric guitar in the chorus place it decidedly in the 21st century. This is a nice place for Nathan to be, since it allows them to access various styles and eras of music without being pigeonholed.
