| | Billy Joe Shaver Real Deal CD Billy Joe Shaver Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Although new Billy Joe Shaver studio albums proved to be rarities in the early 2000s, THE REAL DEAL (2005) makes up for lost time with a solid set of the Outlaw Country performer's originals (and a bonus holiday tune). With a little help from Big & Rich, Nanci Griffith, and others, the ever-charming Shaver eases into his laid-back, often-humorous songs, reinforcing exactly why he's such a revered country artist.

Real Deal album
$5.79 Outlaw Country hero Billy Joe Shaver performed for years with his guitar-playing son Eddy as the duo Shaver. Some time after the younger Shaver died of a drug overdose in 2000, his father decided to complete the unfinished tracks for what would have been Eddy's first solo album. Nearly all the songs were co-written by Eddy, and feature his guitar ...

Real Deal album
$13.35 FAIR & SQUARE's release was highly anticipated by John Prine fans, as the veteran singer/songwriter hadn't recorded an album of new songs in 10 years (the preceding IN SPITE OF OURSELVES was mostly cover tunes). Happily for both Prine and his contingent, FAIR & SQUARE represents that most coveted of phenomena, the Return to Form. Though 1995's LOST DOGS & MIXED BLESSINGS ...
| | Billy Joe Shaver Freedom's Child CD (2002)
Real Deal CD music
$8.29 Contains the hidden track, "Necessary Evil" which occurs after "Merry Christmas To You".
Billy Joe Shaver is a man who has long known more than a little about hard times, and he was certainly put to the test between 1999 and 2001 -- his wife and mother succumbed to cancer; his son and musical collaborator, Eddy Shaver, died of a drug overdose; and he came face to face with his own mortality after suffering a heart attack on-stage while touring behind his final album with Eddy, The Earth Rolls On. Combine all this with the national malaise which struck America in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks, and it seems appropriate that Freedom's Child, Billy Joe Shaver's 13th album, released in the fall of 2002, eases back on the flinty country-rock he crafted with his son and aims for a quieter, more traditional approach and a contemplative tone. On Freedom's Child, Shaver's thoughts often turn to ...
| | Grayson & Whitter Recordings Of Grayson & Whitter 1928-1930 CD (1999)
Real Deal music CDs
$13.09 This duo recorded the original versions of quite a few songs that went on to become folk chestnuts. Tracing the source of a folk song might seem a confusing task, but it is simple compared to sorting out the various recordings, re-recordings, reissues, and repackagings of reissues that have come out on Grayson and Whitter. Old-time music experts can argue over which is the better recording of "Handsome Molly," but no one will argue that this particular County product ...
| | Holy Modal Rounders Last Round CD (1978)
Real Deal songs
$13.29 Digitally remastered by Gene Rosenthal, L. Packer (Uncle Punchy Studios).
Unless, like the Holy Modal Rounders, you've spent a lot of time listening to Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music while ingesting recreational drugs, their music might sound a bit odd to you. Actually, given the ramshackle performances, it sounds a bit odd in any case, but as with any humorously intended work, appreciation of it depends on one's sympathy with the artists. For initiates, this seventh (and, so it seemed at the time of its release, final) album was one of the Rounders' better ones, with Peter Stampfel, Chris Weber, and especially Robin Remaily turning out characteristic new work and covers of old songs like "Euphoria" and "If You Want to Be a Bird" backed by a rhythm section. "August, 1967 (Hippies Call It STP)," borrows its tune ...
| | Glenn Meganck Lost In Austin CD (2001)
Real Deal album
$17.69 Glenn Meganck is a much lesser-known negative photo image of Jimmy Buffett -- a popular mystery writer who moonlights as an indie country artist. The liner notes feature reviews for his Tony Kozol mystery series, but the songs have nothing to do with them, so there was hardly an artistic reason to include those. He has a passable baritone voice and a pleasant way with a melody, but, musically, he's definitely just very good bar band material. While his melodic abilities hardly create distinctive country material, his literary skills translate to strong ...
