Jim Hall has long exhibited a sense of adventure in his playing, which has intensified as his career has progressed. His duo meeting with Enrico Pieranunzi (a kindred spirit and one of the most in-demand jazz pianists in Europe) consists of original compositions and inventive duo improvisations (three of them are titled "Duologue" by number), which greatly contrast from one another, along with the extended improvisation "Our Valentines," which seems to briefly hint at "My Funny Valentine" as its inspiration. The compositions are as compelling as the improvisations. "Careful" is a tricky piece recorded many times by the guitarist over the decades; Pieranunzi takes immediately to the Hall's quirky blues. "Jimlogue" has the flavor of a 20th century composition for classical piano; one can easily imagine Hall composing it during his conservatory days, though it could just as easily be brand new at the time of these sessions. Jane Hall (the guitarist's wife) penned the beautiful ballad "Something Tells Me" for an earlier CD; this version proves to be even more spacious and lyrical than its initial recording. The pianist's songs include the tasty waltz "From E. to C.," the provocative "The Point at Issue," and the soothing finale, "Dreamlogue." Larry Appelbaum, the recording lab supervisor at the Library of Congress, came across this tape by accident while transferring the library's tape archive to digital. What a find. Forget the Five Spot recording that sounds like it was recorded inside of a tunnel from the far end. The sound here is wonderfully present and contemporary. While hardcore jazz purists wince at a mere mention of them, the long-established fusion/smooth jazz combo Spyro Gyra continue spinning easygoing grooves for their fans. With their 27th album (not even counting collections), Spyro Gyra up the ante by adding some tasty world-music rhythms. By juggling the sparkling Caribbean steel drums of Andy Narrell, dancehall, mainstream reggae, and Spanish flamenco, they come up with the exhilarating panorama "Jam Up." The band plays with extra fire and spunk throughout without ever sacrificing their flair for bright, sunshine-y melodies and soulful soloing.
Thirty-one years and 27 albums in (not including compilations), urban contemporary jazz unit Spyro Gyra are playing with the funky inspiration and clever melodic and rhythmic invention that have made them synonymous with the genre, but that they haven't displayed on their own recordings for some time. This is not to say the quintet have ever been completely off their game. They know what they do, and do it extremely well -- they can make smooth and groove-oriented records all day long -- but the sheer edge and shifty, even knotty melodic ideas on "Good to Go-Go" feel adventurous in contrast to the records they've made since the beginning of the decade where they've fused smooth jazz to some Caribbean, Spanish, and other kinds of world music as well as written and recorded with pop vocalists. ...
