Jazz musician Kyle Eastwood has an interesting background in jazz: his father, the actor/director Clint Eastwood, is a rabid enthusiast, and has made a film about Charlie Parker and a documentary about Thelonious Monk. Eastwood is a bassist who knows his jazz history, and 2005's PARIS BLUE is his second album as a leader. Fusing post-bop with ambient atmospheres, Eastwood gives his compositions a contemporary edge. The best example of this past/present mash-up is the opener "Big Noise," which collages hip-hop-influenced breakbeats with a pulsing, bass-driven groove (the album also includes two club-ready remixes). In all, PARIS BLUE is a solid, varied, and entertaining recording that should appeal to fans of both old-school jazz and its myriad off-shoots.

JazzTimes (p.72) - "[T]he funky 'Cosmo' has a catchy head for the horns to play, and when Eastwood's band gets a chance for some straightahead soloing in 'Le Pont Royal' the results swing pretty hard." Kyle Eastwood Paris Blue Songs | 1. | Big Noise |

| | Brian Culbertson It's On Tonight CD (2005)
Paris Blue CD music
$11.99 With its seething, laid-back funk beats and steamy lyrics full of obvious references to romantic trysts, it doesn't get any sexier than Brian Culbertson's IT'S ON TONIGHT. A number of prominent crossover jazz artist lend their talents here. For example, the downtempo title track features a sensual R&B vocal from singer Will Downing. Later, saxophonist Boney James' mellifluous lines become the focus of "The Way You Feel." On "Secret Affair," relative newcomer Chris Botti plays Miles Davis-influenced riffs over a spacious one-chord vamp (and his use of a Harmon mute creates that smoky, late-night effect).
Kirk Whalum's silky tenor saxophone beautifully complements Patti Austin's soulful voice on "Love Will Never Let You Down," a seductive ballad about love's resilience. Instrumental tracks such as "Sensuality" and "Touch Me" combine relaxing atmospherics with deep-pocketed grooves. Through it all, Culbertson's smooth keys and horn lines (he plays both trumpet and trombone) shimmer and shine.

| | Herbie Hancock Possibilities CD (2005)
Paris Blue music CDs
$15.65 Though Herbie Hancock is known first and foremost as the groundbreaking jazz pianist whose career began in earnest with Miles Davis's band in the 1960s, he's been genre-bending for much of his musical life, from his '70s fusion adventures to his '80s hip-hop crossover. So those who cynically accuse Hancock of following Carlos Santana onto the superstar-duets gravy train with POSSIBILITIES may not be taking the long view. Having penned some of the most enduring jazz standards and worked with the music's most towering figures, Hancock is long past needing to prove his jazz credentials, and his collaborations here with Sting, Joss Stone, Stevie Wonder, and others must be taken at face value.
Always one to work a groove into whatever he's doing, Hancock dips into R&B with newcomer Raul Midon on a hopped-up version of Wonder's "I Just Called to Say I Love You" and darts and stings behind Christina Aguilera on Leon Russell's "A Song for You." He detours into blues with Jonny Lang, touches on straight pop-rock with Jon Mayer (on the infectious opener, "Stitched Up)," and delves into instrumental impressionism with Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio to end the album, with "Gelo No Montana." Despite some sterling solos, at no point on his album does Hancock hog the spotlight, ...

| | Kyle Eastwood Now CD (2006) Digipak
Paris Blue album
$14.29 Bassist Kyle Eastwood may enjoy a bit of name recognition thanks to his famous actor/director father Clint, but the musician's grasp of the post-bop idiom and his ability to mix it with accessible pop and R&B flavors finds him determined to stand on his own merits. Although 2006's NOW has moments of adventure and edge--the groovy fusion of the title track opener, for instance--much of the album stays smooth and laid-back, with featured vocalists and a wine-and-candlelight vibe. But even while keeping things mellow Eastwood manages some surprises, such as his fusion-fueled cover of the Police's "Every ...

$9.29 NNMaddox, Todd Zombie, Reverend Ezell Jenkins and Jimmy Haig. These four men had very little in common. NNMaddox was already a punk rock legend as the lead singer of The Abandoned Nutsack in 1998. After the demise of that band, He began working with Todd Zombie.Todd Zombie had a long line of family members in the music industry. In late 1998, his frustrating with getting his solo career off the ground caused him to nearly give up on his dream. Todd's deep bellow and off-the-wall appearance grabbed Maddox's attention after a show at New Orleans' Howlin Wolf in late 1997. His fascination with comic books, horror movies, violence, gore, death metal and the teachings of Church of Satan founder Anton Lavey was so interesting to Maddox that he decided to form Georgia Home Boy. Unfortunately, those same ideas that intrigued Zombie did not amuse Reverend Ezell Jenkins. Reverend Ezell Jenkins was born in rural Georgia in 1937 with a strict Baptist upbringing. Young Ezell began studying religion and conducted his first sermon at the age of 15. His unorthodox delivery and motivational speeches mesmerized audiences all throught the South. In his high school years, he taught himself how to play nearly a dozen instruments, including the upright bass, glockenspiel, vibraphone, clarinet, violin and cello. These instruments would be featured prominently in some of Georgia Home Boy's later releases. He was a member of the Jenkins Brothers Jazz Quartet ...
