(3 Customer Reviews)
Dionne Warwick's first album for Warner Brothers after leaving the Scepter label, 1972's DIONNE finds the vocalist working once again with her most celebrated collaborators, the legendary songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David. (In fact, this was the last time that Bacharach and David would work together for decades.) Here Warwick's crystal-clear voice breezes through many Bacharach/David originals, including a reworking of the hit "Close to You," resulting in a solid, if underrated, record.

$11.09 After leaving Scepter, Dionne Warwick floundered for a while as she sought the production and arranging assistance she needed to return to her past heights. She didn't get it on this 1975 release, as songs like "Love Me One More Time" and "Jealousy" were tentatively sung, burdened with unimpressive lyrics, or poorly produced. Warwick was also experiencing personal problems and experimenting with adding an "e" to her last name, neither of which helped the situation. ~ Ron Wynn

| | Dionne Warwick Then Came You CD (1975) Remastered
Dionne
$10.85 After being a premier vocalist in the '60s, Warwick seemed to have hit a stylistic wall by the early '70s. By the time she signed with Warner Bros. in 1970, Warwick attempted many styles and producers. Then Came You, released in 1975, has her teaming with both Jerry Ragovoy and, for one track, Thom Bell. Jerry Ragovoy was a successful producer who had Garnet Mimms and Howard Tate among his credits. For this effort, Ragovoy assembled a strong New York session band, including John Tropea, Leon Pendarvis, and Bob Babbitt. The first track, "Take It From Me," has Warwick getting a more R&B styled production rather than MOR. That was perfect since her voice had matured, attaining an effortless warmth and ease. Here she wasn't so much an interpreter of "great material," her voice and charm were the primary draw. Ragovoy's track "Move Me No Mountain" has a Barry White-styled backing, and Warwick got a chance to be more sensual. "How Can I Tell Him," a skilled, song about exiting a relationship, written by Ragovoy and Jacob Brackman, incorporates a slick arrangement that perfectly matches the feeling of person exiting a relationship. Warwick perfectly sung the lyrics with a sense of cautiousness, but also a little bit of happiness to be leaving. The title track is the duet with the Spinners. The song, produced by Thom Bell, was a number one pop single and her biggest hit in close to four years. Then Came You is mostly an innovative effort of New York R&B/pop that should make anyone's short list of albums that truly capture the style. ~ Jason Elias

| | Alexis Korner Kornerstoned: Anthology 1958-1983 CD (2006) (Import) United Kingdom
Dionne
$24.79 While MUSICALLY RICH...AND FAMOUS documents the second half of British blues godfather Alexis Korner's career, KORNERSTONED adopts a more comprehensive approach, following the pioneering singer/guitarist from the very beginning of his musical life, all the way through every subsequent phase of his development. So we get not only his mid-1960s work with burgeoning blues-rock giants like Paul Rodgers and Steve Marriott, but also his `50s skiffle recordings (basically the British version of jug-band music) with the Ken Colyer band and his own skiffle group, and even an early acoustic guitar duel with famed fingerpicker Davey Graham on "3/4 A.D." Over the course of its two discs, this collection examines pretty much every aspect of this seminal bandleader's historic career.
Gravel-voiced Alexis Korner is arguably the most important figure in the history of British blues - the inspiration for several generations of star musicians, from The Rolling Stones to Led Zeppelin & beyond. This first-ever full-career retrospective spans everything from mid-50s skiffle to his final blues outings, via groundbreaking 60s R&B & his pop hits with CCs in the 70s. Two CD set. Castle. 2005.
| | Dionne Warwick Just Being Myself CD (1973)
Dionne
$10.85 Dionne Warwick (on the album's cover her last name is spelled with an 'e' at the end) signed with Warner Brothers in the early '70s, and her second album for the label finds her continuing to experiment with blending R&B, pop, and easy-listening arrangements. The champion soul music songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland wrote most of the material here, and they also assume production duties. Warwick's sophisticated delivery and warm, relaxed timbre are in top form, and the string-sweetened arrangements make this one a good bet for fans of Philly soul and quiet storm R&B.

| | Diana Ross Blue CD (2006)
Dionne
$10.79 Recorded in 1972 but not properly released until 2006, Diana Ross's BLUE was originally conceived as an addendum to the former Supreme's starring role as Billie Holiday in the film LADY SINGS THE BLUES. While the soundtrack to the film found Ross delivering pop-centric versions of Holiday's songs, BLUE offers a jazzier take on the material, providing a more appropriate tribute to Holiday's legacy.
Jazz purists may still bristle at the notion of anyone filling Lady Day's shoes, but taken on her own merits Ross delivers some fine performances. The soul singer sounds confident and at ease on Holiday chestnuts like "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes" and "He's Funny That Way," and her vocals are bolstered by some fine backing musicians and top-notch arrangements by the likes of Oliver Nelson and Benny Golson. Reputedly shelved by Motown founder Berry Gordy for commercial reasons, BLUE's appearance some 37 years later should please fans of both Ross and Motown.
| | 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Debarge CD (2000)
Dionne
$6.79 Originally released on Gordy Records. Includes liner notes by David Nathan.
This is part of MCA's 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection series.
A family group that Motown had groomed, in part, as a successor to the recently departed (to Epic Records) Jackson 5, DeBarge was one of the more consistently successful Motown acts of the '80s. This well-chosen representative compilation is wisely divided into two halves--"Smooth" and "Groove," which is to say, ballads and dance numbers.
Among the ballads, the best known is the creamy "All This Love," still a staple on R&B radio. Among the dance tracks, the standout is Diane Warren's "Rhythm of the Night," which was featured in the film classic THE LAST DRAGON (cinema fans will also be pleased by the inclusion of "Who's Johnny," the theme from the equally classic motion picture SHORT CIRCUIT).
Digitally remastered by Jeff Willens (Universal Mastering).
Additional personnel includes: Stevie Wonder (harmonica).
Producers include: Eldra DeBarge, Iris Gordy, Jay Graydon, Richard Perry, Peter Wolf.
Compilation producer: Harry Weinger.
DeBarge: Eldra, Randy, James, Mark, Bunny.

| | Gene Watson Then & Now CD (2005)
$14.55 Soulful South Texas honky tonk singer Gene Watson never seemed to take his career all that seriously -- even through his period of greatest success, when he was having a string of hit singles in the early '80s, he kept his day job as an auto body repairman -- but since the early '70s, he's recorded more than his share of minor country classics. On his first album for Koch, a label that specializes in reviving the careers of faded old-school country singers, Watson has chosen 13 of his favorite songs to revisit. The results are impressive; rather than being a cynical "updating" of old hits with inappropriately modern production and arrangements, as so many country singers have done over the decades, Then & Now doesn't focus on Watson's best-known old songs. There's no "Love in the Hot Afternoon" or "Fourteen-Carat Mind" here, but every song Watson picked out is a gem. Producing the sessions himself and surrounding his weathered but not faded voice with a small group of traditional country musicians, Watson has created a timeless-sounding, largely acoustic set of tunes that could have been recorded at any point in the preceding 50 years of country music. Old-school gems like "If I'm a Fool for Leaving" (from the pen of Little Jimmy Dickens) sit next to more modern fare such as "You Could Know as Much," which someone like Travis Tritt could take into the charts tomorrow. An unpretentious, easygoing set of favorites, Then & Now is primarily for Watson's longtime fans, but those averse to the overly slick production of Urban Cowboy-era Nashville, which often marred Watson's older albums, will also appreciate hearing these songs in a more sympathetic setting. ~ Stewart Mason

| | Black Eyed Peas Monkey Business CDs (2005) (Import) Import; Japan
$41.45 Limited-edition Japanese release with three bonus tracks ("Do What You Want," "If You Want Love," and "Make Them Hear You"), plus a bonus DVD (NTSC, Region 2) with an electronic press kit and the music videos for "Don't Phunk With My Heart" and "Don't Lie."
The Black Eyed Peas' fourth outing, MONKEY BUSINESS, picks up right where their platinum-selling breakout album, ELEPHUNK, left off, with the feel of a non-stop party run by an ultra-savvy DJ. "Pump It" opens the disc on a straight sample of Dick Dale's surf classic "Misirlou," as the three MCs of BEP float in and out--sometimes rapid-fire, sometimes measured--with Fergie stepping in on cue to alternately sing softly or with deep, soulful emotion.
The Peas' origins are tied to the DJ-driven world of breakdancing, and that flavor saturates MONKEY BUSINESS, as beats drop in and out, tracks blend into other tracks, and a lighthearted spirit of sophisticated ecstasy prevails. The aforementioned "Pump It" slides flawlessly into the lively single "Don't Phunk with My Heart," and the stage for the album is set. Icons James Brown and Sting drop by, on the uncompromisingly funky "They Don't Want Music" and the reggae-soaked "Union," respectively, but they're just guests on board for the ride (along with Justin Timberlake, John Legend, and others), part of the musical mural. The Black Eyed Peas turned from underground favorites to hit-making performers on ELEPHUNK; this follow-up continues that upward progression.
DVD content is in the Ntsc format, Region Code 2.
