(1 Customer Review)
Dionne Warwick (on the album's cover her last name is spelled with an 'e' at the end) signed with Warner Brothers in the early '70s, and her second album for the label finds her continuing to experiment with blending R&B, pop, and easy-listening arrangements. The champion soul music songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland wrote most of the material here, and they also assume production duties. Warwick's sophisticated delivery and warm, relaxed timbre are in top form, and the string-sweetened arrangements make this one a good bet for fans of Philly soul and quiet storm R&B.

Just Being Myself CD music
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has ...
| | Dionne Warwick Then Came You CD (1975) Remastered
Just Being Myself music CDs
$11.09 After being a premier vocalist in the '60s, Warwick seemed to have hit a stylistic wall by the early '70s. By the time she signed with Warner Bros. in 1970, Warwick attempted many styles and producers. Then Came You, released in 1975, has her teaming with both Jerry Ragovoy and, for one track, Thom Bell. Jerry Ragovoy was a successful producer who had Garnet Mimms and Howard Tate among his credits. For this effort, Ragovoy assembled a strong New York session band, including John Tropea, Leon Pendarvis, and Bob Babbitt. The first track, "Take It From Me," has Warwick getting a more R&B styled production rather than MOR. That was perfect since her voice had matured, attaining an effortless warmth and ease. Here she wasn't ...

| | Aretha Franklin One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism CDs (1987) Bonus Tracks
Just Being Myself songs
$6.75 Fifteen years after Amazing Grace, her groundbreaking gospel record, Aretha Franklin returned to the church yet again, and though the results couldn't top the wall-to-wall power and spirit found on her first, the double-album One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism, it's still a worthy document of what the church meant to her. The roster of invited guests was enough to get gospel fans excited, including the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rev. Jasper Williams, and Rev. C.L. Franklin (her brother, who delivered the invocation), plus Mavis Staples, Joe Ligon (from the Mighty Clouds of Joy), and her sisters, Carol and Erma. Slotted next to sanctified standards like "Surely God Is Able" and "The Lord's Prayer," were several great selections from the pop repertoire, including a scorching version of "Higher Ground." Staples stops by for an ebullient run through the latter-day standard "Oh Happy Day," and the performance closes with a touching finale, "Packing Up, Getting Ready to Go," featuring Staples and Ligon, plus Carol and Erma Franklin. ~ John Bush

| | Natalie Everything New CD (2006)
Just Being Myself music CDs
$12.65 Natalie may have scored a modest hit, "Goin' Crazy," with her self-titled 2005 debut album, but she didn't leave much of a lasting impression amid the legion of similarly attractive young urban dance-pop singers typified by Beyoncé and Ciara. Her second album, Everything New, isn't likely to change matters. Like its predecessor, the album opens with a nice breezy urban ballad with a sugar-coated hook. The song, titled "What You Gonna Do?," also features a phoned-in feature by Bun B, who seems like a strange partner considering his hardcore rap credentials. Everything New never really surpasses this opener, sadly, as some songs take an even breezier approach (e.g., "All of My Life"), eschewing the urban flourishes, while others compensate with harder, dancier productions ("Dance with Me"). The balance is nice, mainly employed by producers Happy Perez and Play N Skillz. But for an album titled Everything New, there sure isn't much here that sounds like anything approaching "new." This is boilerplate urban dance-pop, for the most part, and arguably a step down from Natalie, which had the benefit of lowered expectations because it was a debut album by a theretofore unknown artist. The exception to the lack of newness on Everything ...
