Digitally remastered by Chris Gehringer (The Hit Factory, New York, New York).
This release includes a bonus DVD featuring live footage and commentary from King Diamond.
Widely recognized as King Diamond's solo masterpiece, Abigail is also unquestionably one of heavy metal's greatest concept albums. A passion for dark-themed theatrics had always qualified the work of the man formerly known as Kim Bendix Petersen before this release, and yet his band's debut from two years prior had merely hinted at the conceptual ambitions yet to come. So turn out the houselights, draw the curtains, and listen closely as King Diamond's synthetically altered voice introduces us to the witch Abigail La'Fey (in an obvious tribute to Anton LaVey, founder of the Church of Satan) through -- fittingly enough -- her "Funeral." Moments later, proper musical opener "Arrival" introduces the familiar post-metal, semi-thrashing style over which Diamond will narrate his spine-tingling tale of horror, a tale which, in the process, conjures such career-topping compositions as the stunning "A Mansion in Darkness," the surprisingly clever "The Family Ghost," and the quite beautiful acoustics, orchestrations, and sound effects introducing "The 7th Day of July 1777." Ensuing highlights such as "The Possession," the title track, and the epic finale of "Black Horsemen" maintain the pattern of carefully structured lyrics, as they spell out in frightening detail Abigail's terrifying act of possession and demonic rebirth through the hapless leading couple's newborn child. By the time it's all screamed and done, it's safe to say Rosemary's Baby was no more gruesome! Also of note, musically speaking, ace future Motörhead drummer Mikkey Dee matches incredible versatility and envious power for a command performance here, and one can noticeably hear guitarist Andy LaRocque nudging Diamond's erstwhile Mercyful Fate cohort Michael Denner out of the dual lead guitar equation with his inspired leads (he would soon assume an unchallenged position at the feet of the King's throne). As for the master of dark ceremonies himself, King Diamond, too, takes a quantum leap by subjecting his trademark falsettos to layer upon layer of multi-tracked harmonies, transforming what was previously an acquired taste for some into an overpowering and irresistible self-contained chorus sent straight from the pits of hell. Thanks to all of this, the combined quality of the words and music to be found on Abigail make it an exercise in goth metal storytelling that remains quite simply nonpareil -- among the living, at least. [Later reissued on compact disc with the bonus track "Shrine," Abigail was also paired with its predecessor, Fatal Portrait, for Roadrunner's Two from the Vault series.] ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Abigail is a classic,but................ Abigail is indeed King's finest release, along with Fatal Portrait. What more can be said that hasn't about this classic? The only drawback which I think ruins the live performance,is Michael Moon(Michael Denner left shortly after the album's release)-Mr Moon's performance is terrible-his solos are out of key,and he totally butchered Michael Denner's godly solos. Abigail
$10.79 This release includes a bonus DVD featuring an interview with King Diamond.
Kim Bendix Petersen, better known as King Diamond, has built an empire out of wailing spirits, singing spiders, and voodoo priestesses. His 11th full-length ghost story, The Puppet Master, centers around an unfortunate man, his girlfriend, and a husband and wife team of puppet masters as they abuse and torture their subjects somewhere in Budapest. Diamond wisely forgoes his usual cheeseball spoken-word intro and simply launches into "Midnight," a melodic dirge that ranks high amongst his huge -- and often inconsistent -- body of work. The brutal "Emerencia" features stellar guitar work from Andy LaRocque -- the thread that binds each and every King Diamond album -- and "The Ritual" aptly deals with the popular heavy metal theme of souls burning in Hell -- lyrical prowess has never been his forte. The remainder of the record is serviceable goth-metal filled with oaths and omens, blood and sacrifice, and one ill-conceived Christmas song. King Diamond has reached a stage in his career where evil has begun to fade into novelty, and The Puppet Master resonates with a dark giddiness that suits a man with face paint and a cape nearing his fifties. However, there's still a sinister aura that surrounds ...
| | Mercyful Fate Melissa CD (1983) Bonus DVD; Anniversary Edition; Reissue; Digipak
Abigail
$17.39 Digitally remastered by Chris Gehringer (The Hit Factory, New York, New York).
One of the most important metal bands of the 1980s, Mercyful Fate took the gloom and doom of Black Sabbath, infused it with the faster tempos of Judas Priest, and added the complexity of prog rock. Meshing the sinister riffs and vibrant guitar harmonies of Michael Denner and Hank Shermann with the sterling rhythm section of bassist Timi Hansen and drummer Kim Ruzz, then topping it all off with the ghostly baritone and infamous falsetto of King Diamond, Denmark's renowned Satanic quintet took dark metal to a whole new level. Five-minute gems like "Evil" and "At The Sound Of The Demon Bell" feature enough ideas for two separate numbers apiece, with the band creatively using unexpected rhythmic and dynamic changes and unconventional song structures.
The album's standout is the radical epic "Satan's Fall," which exceeds 11 minutes and only repeats the introductory section twice, ...

| | Lizzy Borden Deal With The Devil CD (2000)
Abigail
$9.69 A lot may have changed in the years since the last Lizzy Borden album, Master of Disguise, but the band, bless their souls, have stuck to their heavy-metal-meets-glam-in-a-dark-alley aesthetic. That's consistency for you. Not to mention an enviable ability to stay blind to musical trends. After disappearing for nearly a decade, thanks to legal wrangles, and then regrouping with a new lineup, Lizzy still sound like the missing link between Skid Row and Iron Maiden. The songs are simplistic, the guitars are over the top, and the lyrics are standard-issue metal schlock. Which are minor misdemeanors considering that the album packs in more hooks than a fisherman's kit. With its crunchy anthems, stomping choruses and overall fondness for pedal-to-the-metal excess Deal With the Devil is as infectious as chicken pox. On two tracks, Lizzy aim to stretch their wings -- "Zanzibar" wears its Eastern influences on its sleeve; "We Only Come Out at Night" adds a dash of industrial rock to the mix. There are a couple of covers that make up in vigour what they lack in originality: a torqued up, take-no-prisoners run through Blue Oyster Cult's "(This Ain't) The Summer of Love" and a version of Alice Cooper's "Generation Landslide" that manages to replicate much of the sneery edge of the original. And, yes, there's some great cover art by Todd MacFarlane as well. Loud, flashy, unpretentious, and with not a single ballad in sight, Deal With the Devil is good, cheap fun and proof that grunge never happened. ~ Leslie Mathew

| | Santana Freedom CD (1987)
Abigail
$10.49 Bandleader and rock guitar luminary Carlos Santana pays homage to late reggae prophet Bob Marley on the album cover, seen posing in a Marley tee with the yellow, red, and green rays of Rastafari blazing forth from his head. And in keeping with a central theme of both artists' careers, the name of the game here is FREEDOM. Old friend Buddy Miles joins the festivities as lead vocalist, and he's the perfect man for the job. He sings these up-tempo '80s synth-rock anthems of love and liberation with piercing soulfulness. The presence of Woodstock-era organist Gregg Rolie amplifies the reunion ...
