| 1 Life 2 Live Music Review Purchase 1 Life 2 Live CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
1 Life 2 Live album
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite ...

| | Angie Stone Unexpected CD (2009)
1 Life 2 Live music CDs
$13.10 On her second album for Concord's Stax imprint (and fourth overall), Angie Stone delves deeper into funk and hip-hop than on her previous outings. Her last offering, The Art of Love & War, was a critical and commercial triumph for the vastly underrated vocalist, and topped the Billboard chart. With a slew of producers including Sly Williams, Willie "Chuck" Shivers, Karrim King and Fitzroy Reid, Steven "Supe" White, Jonathan Richmond, Jazze Pha, and Stone herself, these dozen tracks continue to reveal her versatility as a vocalist and recording artist; she can sing whatever it is she wants to with equal verve, authenticity, and flair. Despite the slicker and more diverse sounds on Unexpected, the soul quotient is high, even if this isn't strictly a neo-soul album. The new beat consciousness reveals itself most on the title track, which is hard funk at its 2009 best. Cuts such as "Free" might have come right out of the 1990s with their use of careening synths, shimmering hip-hop beats, and colliding loops. But the melody is solid, its chorus and refrain catchy. "I Found a Keeper" is another; its production, arrangement, and structure ...
| | Z-Ro Cocaine CD (2009)
1 Life 2 Live songs
$15.05 Despite his status as one of hip-hop's most prolific artists, Z-Ro never quite spreads himself too thin. The provocatively titled COCAINE is his second release from 2009, and features his trademark self-aware, yet rapier-sharp lyrics over some of the hotter beats out of the fertile Houston scene. The Intro skilfully sets out the landscape as the dark-vocaled MC reflects upon his choice of a life of street dealing without a shred of remorse, while stressing his decision was not exactly the wise one. From ...

| | Mark Lamarr's Ace Is Wild CD Import
1 Life 2 Live music CDs
$17.69 And just who is Mark Lamarr, an American audience asks? Well, Lamarr is a highly successful comedian/presenter/emcee from Britain who also happens to be a record collector of renown in that country. This collection of his favorite Ace recordings is the British equivalent to Jay Leno professing to be an expert on Sun Records and putting together a compilation for Rhino. Besides having excellent taste, Lamarr also writes a great set of liner notes, full of wisecracks and off-kilter humor and a sense that you're sitting around spinning records with the ...
| | Richmond Fontaine Lost Son CD (1999)
1 Life 2 Live songs
$12.95 Lost Son is a beautiful album, a collection of narratives whose characters are both fascinating and doomed. From the kid of "Cascade" to the security guard of "Pinkerton," the subjects of the songs move through despair and hope, while the listener tries to figure out what happens after the song ends. Musically, the album is just as compelling: the loud, ragged guitars and pounding drums of "Mule," "Savior of Time," and "Muddy Conscience" often give way to quiet acoustics, mandolins, and pedal steel; the overall effect is a rich, textured record. Like a Son Volt that manages to rock while at the same time delivering slow songs that never come across as dirge-like, Richmond Fontaine is one of Portland, OR's best exports, and Lost Son is certainly one of their finer works. ~ Brandon Gentry
there are a lot of bridges in portland, oregon. the portland, oregon power trio known as richmond fontaine ...
| | South Park Mexican Reveille Park CD (2002)
1 Life 2 Live album
$13.19 Carlos Coy's follow-up to 2001's NEVER CHANGE is harder and meaner than its predecessor, almost as if the South Park Mexican had decided to circle the wagons and forget all about trying to court popularity outside his immediate Houston circle. He's still at his best when he's trying to combine R&B with Hispanic and Caribbean influences, such as on the infernally catchy "Suckaz and Hataz," and "Lord Loco's Melody." This combination has a charm all its own, but on this outing Coy is mostly more than happy to stick to his chosen turf--drugs, guns and ...

| | Joel Harrison Free Country CD (2003)
1 Life 2 Live album
$13.39 This is certainly an intriguing release. Guitarist Joel Harrison recorded a dozen songs associated with country music, some of them quite traditional, but he recast them in surprising ways, making the CD title of Free Country fit quite well. Sometimes his steel guitar pays respect to the melodies and at other times he freaks out a bit on his electric guitar. None of the vocalists are that outstanding, and ...
