After interviewing candidates, beautiful, sophisticated career woman Allison settles on Hedra Carlson (Jennifer Jason Leigh), a shy, mousy woman with a hopeless fashion sense, and, seemingly, a heart of gold. At first she's an ideal roommate, asking Allison for advice and attempting to emulate her cosmopolitan style. But Hedy's adulation grows more and more disturbing as Allison realizes that her new roommate has a dark side. Barbet Schroeder (BARFLY, REVERSAL OF FORTUNE) directed this taut psychological thriller. Jason Leigh is mesmerizing as the disturbed Hedy, and Fonda is well cast as the unwitting victim of another's psychosis.
SINGLE WHITE FEMALE 2: Following the successful scare tactics of the original, this horror outing sees a young woman (Holly Parker, THAT'S MY BUSH) moving in with a seemingly normal new roommate, Tess (Allison Lange, GACY). Unbeknownst to her unwitting tenant, however, Tess is an Angel of Mercy who makes the rounds, killing off those she deems in need. Unfortunately, Tess is also losing her ability to discern who those people are, and begins turning her "merciful" attentions on her friends. TWO GIRLS FOR A MADMAN is a gem in the oeuvre of the quirky skinflick maestro Barry Mahon; it follows two young, attractive, and temperamentally opposite ballet students who are nonetheless good friends. Sonya is a good girl who takes her studies seriously, while Toni is a wild swinger with dreams of acting; she attends raucous orgies which, of course, are shown here in graphic detail. When psychotic Frank Yeager encounters Toni at an orgy, he blatantly flouts his psychiatrist's advice and follows her, eventually attacking her in a rough sexual encounter. Later, however, she recommends him to Sonya, describing him as "all man," and the madman eventually shows up at the girls' school looking for a follow-up to the first act! Quite explicit softcore, especially for a film from the 60s, TWO GIRLS sports an impressive orgy scene and an extremely sensual, luxurious shower scene.
