Lou Reed issued Transformer, an album meant to psychologically (if not sexually) transform the listener, over three decades before Kinks guitarist Dave Davies documents just a portion of his live performances with a superb and highly recommended 73 minutes of music entitled Transformation. For the fans who have seen the other half of the Kinks live, consistency is as much a part of the equation as entertainment for this artist. The guy not only brings some of the Kinks catalog with him, he takes along much of the fun as well. Keith Smith's extensive liner notes are great reading while one explores "Father Christmas," "Till the End of the Day," and other titles, catching a vibe from the intense and passionate playing: Jonathan Lea's rhythm guitar keeping pace with Jim Laspesa's drums and the lead singer/guitarist's various notions. Some of the material is from 2002's Bug album, most notably the beautiful and moving "Rock You, Rock Me," "Flowers in the Rain," and two variations on "Transformation" -- which is "Life After Life" from the Bug album, and sounds like Dave was listening to Cher's disco hit "Believe" repeatedly when he composed it. This album captures the magic of what's been a treat for the cult that has experienced Dave Davies in concert, truly someone deserving of more attention, as evidenced here. The Angel Air label deserves a Grammy just for its very existence, having the good sense to put so many influential artists out under their umbrella and giving a 20-page booklet to this project along with the 18 tracks. The "You Really Got Me" riff slips in and out of the segues (the full song does get played as the set concludes) on this concert recorded at the Alex Theater in Glendale, CA, for an altruistic cause in 2003. And though Lou Reed is often credited with the dawn of glam rock, keep in mind that it was the Kinks' "Lola" -- which launched two years before Reed's Transformer -- that really got the thing in motion. Transformation is a nice look back at some of those sensibilities, and a good argument for those who consider Dave Davies one of rock's underrated and absolute geniuses. ~ Joe Viglione

Transformation, a Live concert presentation held on May 23, 2003 at the Alex Theater in Glendale, California. The original CD was released in 2003 and contains lively arrangements of familiar tunes such as 'I Need You', 'Picture Book' and 'Living on a Thin Line,' a lovely song included in the acclaimed HBO series, The Sopranos. Nearly half of the songs on the CD are arrangements from his album, Bug, released in 2002. Bug illustrates Davies' versatility with sweet ballads 'Flowers in the Rain' and hard rockers 'Who's Fooling Who' and culminates in the remarkable song arc 'Bug'-'De-Bugged'-'Life After Life'. Transformation reflects Davies' spiritual interests and reveals keen observations and interpretations of the world around us. Features new and previously unreleased material. Angel Air. 2005.

Chosen People is Dave Davies' third solo album, and by this release he seemed to have gotten it right. Gone is the big stadium rock sound and present is Davies' wonderful voice and melodic songs. Although this is not the album fans of "Death of a Clown" were hoping for, it is a much stronger album than 1981's Glamour and 1980's AFL1-3603. Davies still rocks out, but there are more ballads present. Also, the lyrics seem to have much more thought in them and present interesting stories and thoughts. Perhaps it is due to the use of a band and a co-producer on this album (the other two releases were primarily just Davies, although drummer Robert Henrit did drum on Glamour). The songs here are much more melodic and Davies finally displays that wonderful voice that was buried on the other two releases. Yes, his trademark guitar is found throughout, but so are beautiful, heartbreaking songs, such as "Is It Any Wonder." Dave Davies has spent much of his career in the shadow of his brother and the band the Kinks. As good as this album is, it does not ...

A compilation of latter-day Dave Davies solo tunes, this 2006 disc is particularly significant for presenting the first song that the Kinks guitarist wrote and recorded following his stroke in '04. (It's also notable that the collection was released around the same time as his brother Ray's official solo studio debut.) The track, "God in My Brain," is an intriguing composition that combines atmospheric keyboards, programmed beats, and Davies's typically edgy six-string playing, giving listeners an aural expression of his lengthy recovery period. Other highlights of the set include his own enthusiastic live take on the Kinks classic "Picture Book" (from 1997) and a loose, laid-back rendition of George Harrison's "Give Me Love, Give Me Peace on Earth." As an introduction to the ...

Ronnie Spector's vocal work on the "Miami" Steve Van Zandt tune "Baby Please Don't Go" is amazingly perfect, overshadowed only by the majesty of the opening track, "Say Goodbye to Hollywood." The two songs were on a 1977 Epic single and they are the highlight of this superb collection released by the Raven label out of Australia. Dangerous is a compilation that features the various sides Spector cut for Columbia. The Top Five hit "Take Me Home Tonight," released in 1986 as a duet with Eddie Money, was the only one of his ten hits to land that high on the charts. It is also Spector's second biggest career hit under "Be My Baby," which, of course, is what she sings in this tune. Her other track with Eddie Money, "Who Can Sleep," provides more proof that she brought the best out of Money. "Who Can Sleep" works in the same way that "Baby Please Don't Go" grabs you -- with slow-moving intensity. Her cameo on a Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes album, "You Mean So Much to Me," sounds like the duet that it is in the context of this album. These five performances precede the re-release of her Unfinished Business album, and the music flows almost seamlessly. "Love on a Rooftop" is the girl group stuff fans expect, exquisitely produced for Columbia. "Dangerous" is where the Go-Go's should've gone to reinvent themselves, and that Spector tips her hat to the new gals on the block is impressive. Elvis Presley's "Burnin' Love" is put to a dance beat, and it works. What's important about this cover is that it takes Spector away from the elements producers and fans had locked her into. The track "Unfinished Business" is modeled after Hall & Oates' 1984 number one single "Out of Touch." The track, like most of this record, is terrific. The Ronettes' immortal first album and Spector's Siren LP, produced by girl group pioneer Genya Ravan, were the only full length albums by this rock legend. Dangerous is an important and elegant addition to the small output. Glenn A. Baker co-conceived and compiled this treasure, and his liner notes are meticulous, covering all the 45s, album tracks, and unreleased titles Spector recorded along the way. That material is also top-notch and would have made a nice second CD, but with 77 minutes here, including an 18-minute interview with Spector, it's hard to complain. "True to You," "Heart Song," and the dainty "When We Danced" (which has the charm of a Harriet Schock record) are all serious contributions to the Spector catalog. "Good Love Is Hard to Find" is a modern "Walking in the Rain" meets Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans, a definite and worthwhile tribute to Phil Spector. A live version of "You Mean So Much to Me" concludes the musical portion of the program, providing the ...
