"Toccata" is an adaptation of the 4th Movement of Alberto Ginastera's 1st Piano Concerto. The 1996 reissue of BRAIN SALAD SURGERY includes "The Making Of Brain Salad Surgery," anecdotes about the session recorded in 1996.
Principally recorded between June and September 1973. Originally released on Manticore/Atlantic (MC-66669). "The Making Of Brain Salad Surgery" recorded in 1996. Includes liner notes by Jerry McCulley.
The progressive rock power trio Emerson, Lake, and Palmer best known for this classic album, BRAIN SALAD SURGERY.
Much maligned, although it is hard to understand why. They merely took what the Nice did one stage further as Palmer became the songwriter in place of Lee Jackson. The two sides of ELP were adaptations of classical pieces, which usually worked well. On this, 'Jerusalem' and 'Toccata' are given the prog treatment. The longer original suite 'Karn Evil' allows Emerson to let loose on his organ and piano. He is astonishingly fluid and imaginative. A wholly successful album, apart from the dreadful 'Benny The Bouncer'. Somebody, at some stage, must have thought it was a good idea.

| Brain Salad Surgery (K2HD) Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) ELP on K2HD rocks! I was first exposed to Emerson, Lake and Palmer - and "Brain Salad Surgery" - back in high school when the title was released in 1973. I have loved listening to the album for many years, and have enjoyed the original Atlantic release (19124-2) for a long time. This was the first K2HD title I have purchased, and I am now a firm believer in the K2HD remastering technology. When I first listened to this version of the album, it honestly sounded to me as though I was actually sitting in the recording studio listening to ELP lay down the tracks live. The recording is so clear that I am hearing song elements that I have never heard before, providing me with an all-new experience with this enduring music masterpiece. For example, with the Atlantic version, I always found myself skipping over the section of "Toccata" containing the Tympani solo, simply because the drum work sounded muddy and undefined to me. Not so with the K2HD version, as every percussive stroke sounds clear and clean. The same holds for the entirety of the CD, with bass tones coming through with a clarity I haven't previously heard. Also, for those who are interested in replica album cover work, the K2HD version faithfully reproduces that of the vinyl version. So, if you're a fan of the original, I can't recommend this version of "Brain Salad Surgery" any more highly. I now look forward to receiving my next K2HD CD, "Adventures in Utopia," which should be arriving this week. Thank you to CD Universe for exposing me to a new remixing technology that I didn't even know existed! Submitted by jimbrumbaugh (St. Paul, MN area) Was This Review Helpful? $16.39 The group was still doing some folk-type vocal numbers on this, their second album, but it was clearly moving in the direction of progressive rock. The 18-minute title track by Richard Harvey took up one whole side of the original LP, and incorporated medieval, baroque, and classical-era influences in its structure. That track is probably what attracted Yes (and, more specifically, Steve Howe) to the group in time for them to be booked as an opening act on the progressive rock supergroup's 1975 tour. The tempo changes come just often enough to keep the material from being remotely stilted or boring, and the radical shifts in dynamics make this a rather sonically impressive piece -- and the melodies are gorgeous. The resulting album is a strange brand of "progressive folk," never veering too far from traditional ...
