Betty Harris' solid 1960s work with New Orleans songwriter and producer Allen Toussaint certainly deserved more audience and attention than it got at the time, and this fine compilation is the proof of that. Songs like "I Don't Want to Hear It," "Sometime," "Nearer to You" (which was a Top 40 R&B hit), and the stone-driving, funky "There's a Break in the Road" all show a solid soul singer working with top-notch material and the production by Toussaint is appropriately spooky, atmospheric, and dripping with New Orleans soulfulness. Also included here is Harris' pre-Toussaint cover of Solomon Burke's "Cry to Me," which she recorded in 1963 for Jubilee Records, and her version is definitive, no easy accomplishment when you're up against a singer as good as Burke. WestSide's 1998 anthology, Soul Perfection Plus, has everything here plus a few more additional tracks, but Lost Soul Queen has the essential stuff, and either collection will get you there. ~ Steve Leggett

Mere months after releasing A HUNDRED MILES OFF in 2006, the Walkmen issued PUSSY CATS, a song-by-song cover of Harry Nilsson's John Lennon-produced 1974 album of the same name, which was recorded during the duo's notorious "lost weekend" phase. The Brooklyn-based indie-rock act approaches the material with both ambition and playfulness. Among the highlights are a woozy yet emotive reading of the Jimmy Cliff-penned opener, "Many Rivers to Cross," which allows gravel-voiced frontman Hamilton Leithauser to cut loose, and "All My Life," an off-kilter, string-laden track that stands as a testament to the Walkmen's bold eclecticism. The CD is accompanied by a 20-minute documentary on DVD, making the set essential for diehard Walkmen fans, as well as a fascinating document for aficionados of the infamous original album.
Remaking an entire album -- especially one as rooted in mood and the performers involved as Harry Nilsson's Pussy Cats -- seems about as wise an idea as Gus Van Sant's shot-by-shot remake of Psycho. Fortunately, the Walkmen's song-by-song redo of Pussy Cats doesn't come off as a half-baked technical exercise. The band remains loyal to the rambling feel of the original (which, to be fair, was half covers itself) and the results are as intimate as an in-joke between old friends. The Walkmen recorded this album concurrently with A Hundred Miles Off and were getting ready to shut down their Marcata Studio; while it's not exactly the months-long "lost weekend" that Nilsson and John Lennon embarked on in early 1974, Hamilton Leithauser and crew give off a similarly rumpled, tweedy, maybe too smart for their own good vibe as Nilsson did, and invite a bunch of friends, including Ian Svenonius and Mazarin's Quentin Stoltzfus, to help them send Marcata off. Interestingly, one of the stronger moments on A Hundred Miles Off was the band's cover of Mazarin's "Another One Goes By," so the spirit of having fun interpreting other people's music was already flowing by the time they approached Pussy Cats. And while the band's versions of these songs aren't much different than the originals, they do them well: Svenonius' cameo on "Subterranean Homesick Blues" helps make it a goofy highlight, ...
