(9 Customer Reviews)
Twenty-five years after GUILTY, Barbra Streisand's runaway hit record with Barry Gibb, the duo reunited for 2005's GUILTY PLEASURES. While living up to that pop classic is a tall order, Streisand and Gibb are wonderful here, easing through breezy, uplifting tunes that are sure to please fans of both artists.
Babs sounds remarkably assured throughout GUILTY PLEASURES, undoubtedly due, at least in part, to working once again with Gibb, who knows how to elicit some of her finest, most pop-perfect performances. Although Gibb (who co-produced this disc with John Merchant) is credited with two duets on the record (the yearning "Come Tomorrow" and "Above the Law," an ode to deception), he's at his best when providing his signature high-pitched backing vocals and letting Streisand's powerful singing take center stage, as on the immediately catchy "Stranger in a Strange Land," the surprisingly club-ready "Night of My Life," and the vintage Bee Gees track "(Our Love) Don't Throw It All Away." Though GUILTY PLEASURES is aptly named, its unabashedly fun, fluffy atmosphere makes it that much more enjoyable.

Even better than Guilty.... Guilty pleasures is a wonderful album. They have made it again. Barry Gibb has written a couple of wonderful songs that are wonderfully performed by Barbra. How is it possible that she is still the worlds top vocalist after more than fourty years of recording? I think she could sing the phonebook and make music of it. I could only recommend this album, not only to her die-hard fans, but to everyone who can still enjoy a real singer. Submitted by Mats (Sweden) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Barry Gibb is still alive! Who would of thunk it? Barry who has been reeling from his brother's death for two years, comes back to the living with this great collaboration with Barbara Streisand.
This album, like most Bee Gees albums has good tunes throughout. Babs, as always, will take a good song and make it great. Her voice just soars on tune after tune whether it be disco, a romantic love song, or a 50's number.
I was surprised how much I love this album. After 20 listens, I still love it. Submitted by Steve (Arlington, Va.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great musical accomplishments still happen What a relief it is to hear real music in this dark age of talentless rappers and hip-hoppers. This glorious, melodic opus is pure joy. Streisand and Gibb prove you can go home again, and make it even better. I always loved "Guilty", and expected a close second with "Guilty Pleasures"...boy was I wrong! The songs, vocals, and production values are everything you would expect from two sticklers who put 110% into everything they do. This cd better win a Grammy..it's that good! Buy it, hurry, NOW buy it! Submitted by Alex (Laredo Texas) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Guilty Pleasures songs
$9.69 Nights Are Forever was the breakthrough album for Dan Seals and John Coley after some sincere and excellent work on A&M Records in the early '70s. Two of their biggest hits were the title track and the beautiful "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight." Those songs are a good indication of the fine performances this 1976 album contains. The duo's originals like "Long Way Home" and the Dan Fogelberg-ish "Westward Wind" could have been hits as well displaying superb musicianship ...
| | England Dan Dr. Heckle & Mr. Jive CD (1978) Reissued
Guilty Pleasures album
$9.55 The sincerity of their days on A&M Records has turned to total formula by the time Dr. Heckyl & Mr. Jive came around -- and Robert Louis Stevenson expert, author Ray McNally, makes it clear in his book on Mr. Hyde that the true pronunciation is Dr. Jeekill (as in, "I Kill and Hide"). It is quite a paradox that this justified attack on the Hollywood system uses the mispronunciation of this famous title which Hollywood forced upon the world. Were these singers that clever to have slipped this in as a sly parody? Probably not -- because the sentiment in the poem ...
| | England Dan Some Things Don't Come Easy CD (1978)
Guilty Pleasures CD music
$9.69 If Dowdy Ferry Road was their bleak moment in song, Some Things Don't Come Easy is the calm before the storm, a port prior to the schizophrenia that was Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive. Wandering songs like "Who's Lonely Now" are indicative of this album, and it is only one of two titles the singers pen together. They look alike on the smiling, happy airbrushed front cover, but you can almost see sadness in their eyes on the photos on the back. It must have been an intense period as they came up with yet another Top Ten hit, their fifth of six. "We'll Never Have to Say Goodbye Again" was written by Jeffrie Comanor and is far and away the best song on the album. This duo knew how to interpret; they were fantastic at it. The hit single is ...
| | Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced? CD (1967)
Guilty Pleasures music CDs
$9.55 This 1997 reissue of ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? is a remastered version that restores the original LP's track order and album artwork. ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? was previously reissued in 1993 (MCA 10893) with new cover art and a new 17-track running order that included all the songs on either the U.S. or U.K. versions of the original LP. That version is now out of print, and has been replaced by this one, on the Experience Hendrix label, which features remastered versions of the same 17 songs, this time in the order they appeared on the original American LP, with the extra tracks added to the end (a separate version was simultaneously released in the U.K., featuring the same songs but in the original British track order). The Experience Hendrix label is controlled by Hendrix's family.

| | Holly Near And Still We Sing: The Outspoken Collection CDs (2002)
Guilty Pleasures album
$21.35 Holly Near has made a career out of speaking out, so calling her collection And Still We Sing: The Outspoken Collection seems an apt one. In the tradition of the '60s protest singer, Near has never been shy about wearing her liberal beliefs on her shirt sleeve. Although some of the material dates back to the '70s, most of it has been recorded within the last 20 years or so. The first disc is made up of studio tracks from earlier Near albums, including 2000's Edge, 1989's Sky Dances, and 1981's Fire in the Rain; the second disc consists mostly of live tracks featuring a number of guests like Mercedes Sosa and Ronnie Gilbert. Near's songs and lyrics read like a list of left-leaning political causes from the past 20 years, covering everything from nuclear fallout ("Ain't No Where You Can Run") to war ("Foolish Notion") to workers without work ("I Got Trouble"). Although one can never doubt Near's commitment, the arrangements on many of these songs sound dated and occasionally bombastic. The political causes, likewise, sometimes seem like yesterday's news. Nonetheless, longtime fans, aware of Near's politics and style, will be glad to have all of these tracks gathered on And Still We Sing. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.
2-CD collection of thought-provoking songs with magnificent musical contributions by Inti-Illimani, Rhiannon, Mercedes Sosa, Brian Lane Green, John Bucchino, Robben Ford, June Millington, and moreHolly Near is a powerful voice for change. After 30 years of work in social change movements, Near's historical perspective as well as her contemporary activism continue to challenge and inspire audiences around the country. The spectrum of her work is staggering. She presents an inspiring and entertaining keynote while her teaching is a mix of history, therapy, and investigation of craft. Her songwriting invites the listener to his/her best self and her singing voice is full of range and dynamics; indeed, her voice is stronger than it has ever been. She got a dynamic start in film and ...
