| | Gretchen Wilson All Jacked Up CD Gretchen Wilson Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
While Gretchen Wilson's highly successful debut, HERE FOR THE PARTY, was a redneck manifesto for how to have a good time, her 2005 follow-up, ALL JACKED UP, is the next day's eyeopener. Wilson still gets drunk and quarrelsome on the raucous opening title track, but most of this 2005 album is surprisingly low-key, as a number of gentle ballads rub elbows with rural-minded mid-tempo songs (most notably "Politically Uncorrect," featuring the legendary Merle Haggard). Although Wilson mostly sticks to no-frills working-class anthems, she also sneaks in a beautifully melancholy Billie Holiday-like take on the jazz standard "Good Morning Heartache" as a hidden bonus track, showing that this "Redneck Woman" has a charmingly unpredictable streak.
Personnel: Gretchen Wilson (vocals, guitar); Merle Haggard (vocals); J.T. Corenflos (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); John Willis, Bryan Sutton (acoustic guitar); Dean Hall, Kenny Greenberg, Tom Bukovac (electric guitar); Paul Franklin, Russ Pahl (steel guitar, lap steel guitar); Mike Johnson (steel guitar); Jonathan Yudkin (fiddle); Steve Nathan (piano, Hammond b-3 organ); Glenn Worf, Michael Rhodes (bass guitar); Eric Darken, Shannon Forrest, Chad Cromwell (drums, percussion); Wes Hightower, Liana Manis, Jon Nicholson (background vocals).

All Jacked Up
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds ...
| | Gretchen Wilson Here For The Party CD (2004)
All Jacked Up
$9.99 In the tradition of singers such as Wanda Jackson and Tanya Tucker comes Gretchen Wilson, a self-proclaimed hard-living trailer-park inhabitant with country-rock attitude to spare. The pleasant surprise with Wilson is that, in stark contrast to the streamlined country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill, she doesn't mind getting a bit dirty (musically or otherwise). Though her grassroots ethos clearly plays into her success, it's not a pose: Wilson means what she says, and her country twang, mixed with roots and mainstream rock, packs a punch.
HERE FOR THE PARTY alternates between songs about rural, working-class nightlife (particularly Wilson's love of cowboys, whiskey, and, of course, country music) and its trials and tribulations (romantic heartache and spiritual struggle). The runaway single, "Redneck Woman," waves the banner of the "four-wheel-drive tailgate" and standing "barefoot in my own front yard with a baby on my hip." But where the anthemic choruses of songs such as "Here for the Party" are all bravado, "Holdin' ...
| | Brad Paisley Time Well Wasted CD (2005)
All Jacked Up
$9.85 Brad Paisley's music is an interesting amalgam of country sub-genres, a paradigm all its own. He melds straightforward, pop-friendly New Country with clever, somewhat Lyle Lovett-like songwriting and the occasional flutter of Joe Maphis/Jimmy Bryant-style guitar virtuosity. Surprisingly or not, this country combo platter made Paisley a star, and TIME WELL WASTED continues in the aforementioned vein. While there are some fairly mainstream moments here that wouldn't ruffle the feathers of, say, the average Kenny Chesney fan, WASTED boasts plenty of smart, sassy tunes brimming with lyrical witticisms worthy of Tom T. Hall or Shel Silverstein. "Alcohol," for example, is a first-person narrative from the beverage's point of view, and in retrospect it's shocking that it took ...
| | Carrie Underwood Some Hearts CD (2005)
All Jacked Up
$9.69 Country purists may take offense at finding American Idol winner Carrie Underwood's debut album in the country section. An unabashedly manufactured commercial product, SOME HEARTS is the sound of mainstream country in the 2000s heavily steeped in glossy pop. There's nothing downhome or roots-conscious about Underwood's voice or looks: she's the pretty blonde next door with a fine singing voice, but the powers that be have made her a country artist, and that's what the public gets.
None of this is to say that SOME HEARTS is not a good pop album. The combination of Underwood's considerable gift and the slick, spot-on production of Dan Huff and Mark Bright makes for a fine package. Even on somewhat by-the-numbers tunes (like her smash hit "Inside Your Heaven"), Underwood sings with conviction, and she does well with both the ballads and the uptempo tracks. Idol viewers and fans of artists like Faith Hill and Shania Twain will want to check this out.

| | Sugarland Enjoy The Ride CD (2006)
All Jacked Up
$10.45 With the departure of founding member Kristen Hall, Sugarland slimmed down to a duo. Losing one-third of the formula that made their debut a country/pop crossover smash might seem a daunting proposition, but ENJOY THE RIDE finds remaining members Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush not only surviving but thriving. Nettles's brassy belting has more sass and sex appeal than ever, and the in-your-face attitude on many of the pair's songs is even more brash and boundary-pushing than the most full-throttle moments on 2004's TWICE THE SPEED OF LIFE. ...
| | Gretchen Wilson One Of The Boys CD (2007)
All Jacked Up
$8.99 On her third album in as many years, Gretchen Wilson is showing new facets to the "Redneck Woman" persona fleshed out on her debut, HERE FOR THE PARTY. A substantial and satisfying follow-up to 2006's ALL JACKED UP, which some fans found slightly disappointing, ONE OF THE BOYS amplifies the rock-&-roll edge of Wilson's country.
The wild-eyed "You Don't Have To Go Home" and the flat-out Southern rock boogie of "There's A Place in the Whiskey" are enough to qualify Wilson for belated placement in the outlaw country canon of the 1970s next to Waylon Jennings and Jerry Jeff Walker. Elsewhere, the title track is another one of Wilson's defiant statements of purpose, ...
| | Buffy Sainte-Marie Native North American Child: An Odyssey CD (1974)
All Jacked Up
$10.65 Buffy Sainte-Marie has always been a good deal more versatile as a musician than most people realize, roaming through folk, blues, country, pop, and even electronica on her various albums, always using her Cree ancestry as an anchor, and very few singers have dealt with cultural polemics as intelligently as she has. Perhaps because of her restless drive to try new forms, Sainte-Marie's albums are often woefully erratic and inconsistent, but each contains hidden gems, and while her eerie, vibrato-laden singing style can sound affected at times, her drive to constantly pull her agenda into new musical territories is inspiring. Native North American Child is a best-of collection of sorts, originally released in 1974 at the end of her long run with Vanguard Records, but it has an obvious theme as it traces the indigenous strain of Sainte-Marie's ...
| | Brian Jonestown Massacre Thank God For Mental Illness CD (1996)
All Jacked Up
$12.59 At the risk of further belaboring a rather obvious point, with Thank God for Mental Illness, their third collection of absolutely stunning music in less than a year, the Brian Jonestown Massacre parallels the prolific and effortless brilliance of the Rolling Stones at their fevered late-1960s peak; the sheer scope of their achievements is stunning -- rarely are ...
