The first solo release by contemporary blues-based artist Keb Mo' mixes a reverence for traditional country blues with more streamlined elements of commercial pop. Despite a convincing "down-home" approach of gravel-textured vocals and superior slide work and finger-picking skills, Keb Mo' avoids the pose of a hard line revivalist. Instead, he chooses to employ his fluency in the Delta tradition as a palette on which to blend a connoisseur's sampling of various musical genres. Country, funk, swing, and late 20th-Century folk balladry (Traci Chapman, James Taylor and Bob Dylan) all manage to make their way into the mix for a seamless blend of roots and radio friendliness.

Although he had made some good, and interesting, doo-wop records around his native Pittsburgh, this 21-track collection is where the career of Lou Christie begins in earnest. Still working out of Pittsburgh with his collaborator/mentor Twyla Herbert, the majority of these sides have a homegrown, small-label session feel to them, even if they were almost all simultaneously issued for national consumption on the Roulette imprint. Christie's otherworldly falsetto wails on the two big hits here ("The Gypsy Cried" and "Two Faces Have I"), which need no introduction, but his trademarked sound is equally at home and just as fine on B-sides and album filler like "Red Sails In the Sunset," "Tears On My Pillow," "Tonight I Fell In Love" and "When You Dance." The previously unreleased version of the rocker "Money" yields a quirky take to the standard, but everything on here is vintage and prime Lou Christie, a true song stylist who just happened to also write a solid third of the material compiled here. ...

Like most of the releases in Ultra's Chilled series, this bases itself on the same premise: largely downtempo, loungey music geared towards late-night or early-morning periods of relaxation. However, what actually sets this two-disc set apart from its predecessors is that the makeup and track selection is quite diverse in scope. Trip-hop and breakbeats from Mocean Worker and Mr. Scruff start things off nicely, leading into more indie electronic territory courtesy of M83, the Postal Service (making a return appearance), Brazilian Girls and Scissor Sisters before taking a ninety degree turn by including legendary jazz vocalist Nina Simone's stirring "Feeling Good" to close out the first act.
