Thyrfing songs
$11.18 There was a time when British Steel was the hottest, hardest, and most awesome substance on the planet. On Judas Priest "Concert Classics", here it is, in its most appropriate circumstances: live, on stage. Judas Priest re-invented heavy metal. The first band to use the twin-guitar attack, they built on the foundation Black Sabbath had laid and moved metal to a new level. Looking back on the body of the work that the classic Priest line-up of Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, K.K. Downing, Ian Hill and Dave Holland has left us, nobody is in any doubt that the "British Steel" album was the finest studio work the band produced. There are also those people who will tell you that British Steel was the finest British studio album ever made. This album ...
| | Rammstein Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da CDs (2009) Bonus Tracks; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Thyrfing album
$17.79 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. This strange mix of styles is more effective here than it has been for about a decade, and there's no threat of the album becoming ponderous either as the economical tracklist and purposeful songs wipe away the sins of their previous album, 2005's ROSENROT. The group's loyal fans have remained with them through the '00s and have braved all the difficult but ultimately rewarding efforts that came with it. To them, LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA is the big payoff and an instant classic. For the rest of the world, this is that once a decade, perfectly balanced Rammstein album that's immediately accessible but wide and deep enough to explore for years to come.

Thyrfing MP3 Album
$15.65 (MP3 Available for Download) Nickleback's sixth album doesn't stake out new ground, but this Canadian post-grunge quartet is known for their allegiance to old-school hard rock values. That allegiance is borne out on 2008's DARK HORSE, a collection of riff-driven rockers and power ballads that thrives on simple chord progressions, distortion-heavy guitars, and lyrics about partying and other carnal delights. The singalong single "Gotta Be Somebody" may flirt with radio-ready pop, but most of DARK HORSE revels in denim-clad, bad boy swagger.
It's hard to forget that Nickleback is a mainstream act, however, especially given the potent, high-gloss sound of the album, courtesy of veteran producer Robert "Mutt" Lang. Like Def Leppard, another Lang-produced band, Nickleback's rock is packaged prettily enough for soccer moms, a truth evident in accessible ballads like "I'd Come for You." But longtime ...
| | Pantera Cowboys From Hell CD (1990)
Thyrfing music CDs
$5.79 (MP3 Available for Download) In the tradition of bands such as Metallica and Judas Priest, Pantera put themselves on the map with supercharged blues-based metal riffs and screaming/singing vocals. Adding groove to their artistic aggression made COWBOYS FROM HELL a landmark for the band.
With the relentless "Primal Concrete Sledge," Pantera take a chance and incorporate industrial elements into their style, a risky move for a metal band in 1990. "Psycho Holiday" showcases machine-gun syncopation while "Heresy" matches thrash riffs with double bass drumming dexterity. The haunting and dramatic "Cemetery Gates" features soulful vocals and was responsible for thrusting Pantera in the metal mainstream. The outro to "Domination" makes use of an infectiously mosh-worthy progression, while a call-and-answer metal/blues riff comprises the hook in "Shattered." Drummer Vinnie Paul has a drum sound that's comparable to that of Lars Ulrich (of Metallica); both of them were heavily imitated in the early '90s. "Clash With Reality" and "Medicine Man" are studies in incorporating progressive elements into thrash structures. COWBOYS FROM HELL stood at the ...
| | Thin Lizzy CD (1971)
Thyrfing songs
$9.79 (MP3 Available for Download) This includes an 8 page color booklet and also the band's 1st EP as bonus tracks.
On its self-titled debut album, Thin Lizzy was still a few records away from becoming the dual-guitar driven hard-rock juggernaut that it became in the mid-'70s. Instead, this 1971 release found Phil Lynott, Eric Bell, and Brian Downey crafting a conceptual piece that melded the lyricism of Bruce Springsteen with a progressive musical base that at times evoked harder-edged Yes.
Predominantly penned by frontman/bassist Lynott, THIN LIZZY contains material inspired by experiences that the trio had growing up in working-class Dublin. The sprawling "Diddy Levine" is a song about a mother forced to raise a child alone after its father abandons the family (reflecting Lynott's mixed-parentage background) while the eclectic "Clifton Grange Hotel" is the name of an establishment managed by Lynott's mother. Elsewhere, songs such as the staccato "Look What the Wind Blew In" and the gorgeous "Honesty is no Excuse" portray Lynott as both a wild-eyed lady's man and sentimental romantic, respectively. "Remembering Part I" is an epic stroll down memory lane that closes out the original running ...

Thyrfing music CDs
$13.59 The long-running New York City avant noise-metalists Unsane released its sixth album, VISQUEEN, in 2007 on Mike Patton's Ipecac label. Known for a violently confrontational aesthetic--musically, lyrically, and visually (the band's cover art is consistently shocking and disgusting)--Unsane doesn't give an inch here. The band continues to assault listeners with its harrowing metallic grind and deep, ...
