| | Ray Davies Kinks Choral Collection CD (2009) (Import) United Kingdom
Cosas Buenas
$15.85 2009 release from legendary British Rock icon Ray Davies, who returns with all your favorite Kinks songs backed by the spectacular Crouch End Festival Chorus. Singer/songwriter Davies fronted The Kinks from their inception in the '60s until their dissolution three decades later in the early '90s (although there have been hints of a reunion in recent years). This must-have album includes brand new renditions of 15 Kinks klassics including `Waterloo Sunset', `You Really Got Me', `All Day and All of the Night, `Shangri-La', `Victoria' and many more phenomenal tunes. Decca.
Photographer: Sam Seager. Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project ...

| | Mahavishnu Orchestra Between Nothingness & Eternity CD (1974)
Cosas Buenas
$5.95 The first Mahavishnu Orchestra's original very slim catalog was padded out somewhat by this live album (recorded in New York's Central Park) on which the five jazz/rock virtuosos can be heard stretching out at greater length than in the studio. There are only three selections on the disc, all of which were to have been on the group's then-unissued third album -- two of them, guitarist John McLaughlin's "Trilogy: ...

| | Beatles 1 CD (2000)
Cosas Buenas
$13.05 The Beatles: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr. Includes a 30-page color booklet documenting artwork for all the number one singles recorded by The Beatles. Engineers include: Norman Smith, Geoff Emerick, Barry Sheffield. Recorded at Apple, Olympic Sound, Trident and Abbey Road Studios, London, England; Pathe Marconi, Paris, France, between 1962 & 1970. Includes liner notes by George Martin. Digitally remastered by Peter Mew (2000, Abbey Road Studios, London, England). Personnel: John Lennon, George Harrison (vocals, guitar); Paul McCartney (vocals); Ringo Starr (drums). Recording information: EMI Abbey Road Studios, London, England (09/11/1962-??/??/1969); Olympic Sound Studios, London, England (09/11/1962-??/??/1969); Pathé Marconi, Paris FR (09/11/1962-??/??/1969). Introduction by: George Martin. Photographer: Richard Avedon. Apparently, there was a gap in the Beatles' catalog, after all -- all the big hits weren't on one tidy, single-disc compilation. It's not the kind of gap you'd necessarily notice -- it's kind of like realizing you don't have a pair of navy blue dress socks -- but it was a gap all the same, so the group released The Beatles 1 late in 2000, coinciding with the publication of their official autobiography, the puzzlingly titled Anthology. The idea behind this compilation is to have all the number one singles the Beatles had, either in the U.K. or U.S., on one disc, and that's pretty much what this generous 27-track collection is. It's easy, nay, necessary, to quibble with a couple of the judgment calls -- look, "Please Please Me" should be here instead of "From Me to You," and it's unforgivable to bypass "Strawberry Fields Forever" (kick out "Yellow Submarine" or "Eleanor Rigby") -- but there's still no question that ...
